Crystal Crush are crushed coloured glass crystals, available in 4-8 mm size (and 1 cm in the Iceberg shade), designed to be embedded in epoxy, acrylic or polyurethane resins to create surfaces with unique textures and glass inclusions. They are sandable and polishable, allowing completely smooth and glossy finishes once cured.

What it is used for

Crystal Crush is used as a decorative and textural filler in artistic resin projects, decoration and special effects. When embedded in the resin and cured together with it, it creates surfaces with visual depth, colour sparkle and irregular textures that would otherwise be impossible to achieve.

  • Plant pots and decorative pieces with acrylic resins such as Jesmonite AC100 or Acrystal Prima.
  • Countertop surfaces, trays and boards with transparent epoxy resin.
  • Artisan jewellery, gems and cabochons cast in silicone moulds.
  • Texture effects in decorative art pieces and sculpture.
  • Inclusions in resin castings to simulate minerals, sea glass or geological effects.
  • Applications in decorative composites where transparency with colour is required.

How to use it

  1. Prepare your resin according to its mixing instructions: epoxy, acrylic or polyurethane, depending on the project. For transparent castings, a great option is Epofer EX201+E202 Top Coat Epoxi.
  2. Clean the crystals of dust or dirt before use. If they are damp, dry them completely to avoid interfering with the cure.
  3. Pour a thin first layer of resin into the mould or work surface.
  4. Distribute the Crystal Crush crystals over the resin layer in the desired arrangement, whether random or patterned.
  5. Cover with a new layer of resin up to the desired level. For thick pieces, work in layers to avoid excessive exotherm.
  6. Remove air bubbles with a heat gun or jewellery torch at low distance, without overdoing the temperature.
  7. Allow to cure for the time indicated by the chosen resin, horizontally and dust-free.
  8. Once cured, sand progressively (grits 120, 220, 400, 800, 1200 and 2000) until a flat surface is achieved.
  9. Polish with a finishing polisher to restore the gloss and transparency of the whole piece.

Usage tips

Proportions and crystal distribution

There is no fixed ratio: you can use them as near-total fill or as isolated accent points. Bear in mind that the more crystals you incorporate, the more porous the piece may become if they are not properly impregnated with resin. Work in layers and ensure each crystal is completely surrounded by resin to avoid voids and improve final mechanical strength.

Sanding and polishing

Crystal Crush can be sanded together with the cured resin, allowing surfaces to be levelled completely. Always start with coarse grits if there are significant reliefs and work up progressively. Do not skip steps: each grit removes the scratches left by the previous one. For the final polish, a wool or foam pad with fine abrasive compound will restore gloss to both the resin and the embedded glass.

Compatibility with different resins

Crystal Crush is an inert material, making it compatible with most resin systems. It works especially well with transparent epoxy resins such as Epofer EX201+E202, which offer excellent optical clarity once cured. With acrylic resins such as Jesmonite AC100 or Acrystal Prima the result is more opaque but with a very interesting mineral appearance. With polyurethanes, make sure to work in a dry environment, as moisture can affect the cure of this resin family.

Frequently asked questions

Can these crystals be used with any type of resin?

Yes. Crystal Crush is compatible with epoxy, acrylic and polyurethane resins. Its inert nature as a vitreous material means it does not react with curing systems. For transparent projects with high optical clarity, epoxy resins such as Epofer EX201+E202 are the best option.

Can the surface be sanded and polished once cured with the crystals included?

Yes. Crystal Crush is designed to be sanded together with the cured resin. Working with progressively finer sandpaper (from 120 up to 2000) and finishing with a polishing compound, a completely smooth and glossy surface is achieved where glass and resin form a uniform whole.

What crystal size should I choose for my project?

For most decorative projects (plant pots, trays, countertops) the standard 4-8 mm size offers a good balance between effect visibility and ease of resin coverage. The Iceberg shade in 1 cm is intended for larger-scale pieces or when a more striking and contrasted effect is sought.

Is there a risk of the crystals coming loose once the piece is cured?

If the crystals are completely embedded in the resin with no air voids around them, the bond is solid. Subsequent sanding also helps to physically integrate the whole. If crystals are left partially uncovered and the surface is sanded, weak areas may result: always ensure each piece is fully impregnated with resin before curing.

Can they be used in projects in contact with food?

The crushed glass itself presents no risk, but the Food Safe suitability of the whole piece depends entirely on the resin used. If the project requires food contact, use a resin certified for that purpose, such as EpoFood Epoxi Alimentaria, and ensure the surface is properly cured and sanded without sharp edges.

Can the crystals be pigmented or have their colour changed?

The crystals are transparent with their own colour and cannot be re-pigmented directly. However, you can combine them with tinted resin to create depth and contrast effects, or mix different Crystal Crush shades in the same piece for greater visual richness.

Is handling crushed glass dangerous?

Crushed glass may have sharp edges and generate fine dust when handled. It is recommended to work with nitrile gloves, avoid inhaling any dust generated when pouring, and not to handle them in draughty environments without a particle mask. Once embedded in cured resin, they present no risk.

Which transparent epoxy resin is best suited to combine with these crystals?

For projects where transparency and optical clarity are a priority, Epofer EX201+E202 Top Coat Epoxi is an excellent option within the Feroca catalogue. It offers a crystal-clear cure that allows the visual effect of the coloured crystals to be appreciated to the fullest.
