Preguntas frecuentes

How long does silicone take to cure?

It depends on the type and ambient temperature. Platinum silicones (addition) usually cure in 1-4 hours at 23 °C; at higher temperatures, faster. Condensation silicones (tin) take between 4 and 5 hours. If you need to speed up the process, some products allow you to add more catalyst or apply moderate heat. Always check the technical data sheet for each product.

What is inhibition in platinum silicones?

Inhibition is a phenomenon where silicone doesn't cure properly when in contact with incompatible materials. The main inhibitors are: sulfur-containing modeling clay, natural latex, tin rubber, cyanoacrylate adhesives and certain organic materials. If you suspect your original may inhibit, apply a small amount of silicone to the surface and wait for the indicated curing time before molding the complete piece.

Can silicone be applied directly on skin?

Only silicones specifically formulated for dermal use. For lifecast and direct work on skin, at Feroca you have Body Silk-Cast, EASYGEL Silk Cast and KEY-FORM. These formulas are self-releasing from hair and have been designed for safe contact with human skin. Don't use other silicones from the catalog directly on skin.

What mold release to use with silicone?

For condensation silicones (tin), using a mold release is essential, generally petroleum jelly or wax-based. Platinum silicones are self-adhesive to each other, so if you want to make a multipart mold or pour silicone over cured silicone, you must apply specific mold release (petroleum or PVA type) to prevent the parts from fusing together.

How is silicone mixed correctly?

The mixing ratio varies depending on the product: platinum silicones are usually 1:1 by weight or volume, while condensation silicones (tin) are 100:5 (100 parts base + 5 catalyst). Always weigh with a digital scale to respect the exact ratio. Mix well by scraping the sides and bottom of the container, and remove air bubbles with a spatula or with a vacuum chamber if you have access to one.
