The most common are EVA foam (in sheets from 2 to 10 mm), foam clay for details and textures, thermoplastics like Worbla for rigid pieces, polyurethane resins for hard moulds and latex for prosthetics and artificial skin. Each material has its application: foam for armour, Worbla for fine-detail pieces, latex for special effects.

Which foam is best for cosplay?

Sheet EVA foam is the most widely used for its lightness, ease of cutting with a cutter or laser, and because it moulds with heat. For large pieces (armour, shields) use 5–10 mm sheets; for details and decorative layers, 2 mm. Foam clay is ideal for organic textures and details sculpted by hand.

How do you work with Worbla?

Worbla is a thermoplastic that softens with heat (heat gun or hot water at 70–90°C). Once soft it is shaped by hand over a form or directly on the body, and hardens as it cools. It can bond to itself without adhesive, and can be sanded, painted and sealed. Ideal for rigid pieces with fine relief.

How do you paint a foam cosplay armour?

First seal the foam surface with several coats of flexible sealer (such as Plasti-Dip or diluted latex paint) to prevent the paint from cracking. Then apply acrylic paint or spray. For metallic finishes use dry metallic pigments or special paints. The primer coat is the most important step for a long-lasting finish.

What is latex used for in cosplay?

Liquid latex is used to create prosthetics, artificial skin, scars, wounds and special effects on the skin. It is applied in layers on a mould or directly with a brush, and once dry it is flexible and resistant to movement. It is also used to seal and texture foam. For skin application, use latex specifically made for special effects.

Repeated bending (180°), sweating for 60 min, exposure to continuous LED spotlights, and actual use on the move. If it cracks, peels or loses matte finish, it fails the test.

What materials does it work on?

EVA and foam clay, resins of casting (PU/epoxy), 3D printing (PLA/PETG/resin), thermoplastics such as Worbla, and silicones for prosthetics.
