Thixotropic agent in silica powder. Add 3% by weight to resins, gels or paints to prevent sagging on vertical surfaces. Also acts as a matting agent.

Gel de Sílice AT2 is a thixotropic agent in amorphous silica powder that increases the viscosity of resins, gels and paints without affecting their cure. With an incorporation rate of just 3% by weight, it prevents materials from sagging on vertical surfaces and facilitates thin, controlled layer applications. In addition, due to its high absorption capacity, it acts as a matting agent in silicone-based paints and other formulations.

What it is used for

Gel de Sílice AT2 is incorporated directly into the liquid phase of the material to modify its rheological behaviour. It is especially useful when you need a resin, paint or gel to stay where you apply it without sagging, and also when you want to reduce the surface gloss of the final finish.

  • Gelling and thixotropisation of polyurethane resins for vertical surface or overhead applications
  • Latex thickener for thick-layer applications without sagging
  • Matting agent in silicone-based paints for hyper-realistic effects on prosthetics and figures
  • Viscosity regulator in gel coats and top coats
  • Flow control agent in formulations with metallic fillers or hollow glass microspheres
  • Gloss reduction in casting resins where a satin or matte finish is desired

How to use it

  1. Prepare your resin, gel or paint in the usual mixing container, without adding the catalyst or hardener yet if the system allows it.
  2. Weigh the Gel de Sílice AT2: the recommended ratio is approximately 3% by weight of the total mix. For example, for 100 g of resin, add about 3 g of silica.
  3. Incorporate the powder very slowly and with gentle movements. As it is extremely volatile, avoid pouring it all at once or in the presence of air currents.
  4. Mix slowly and continuously until a completely homogeneous dispersion is achieved, with no lumps or unincorporated areas.
  5. If the system requires a catalyst, add it at this point following the resin manufacturer's instructions.
  6. Apply the thixotropised material with a spatula, brush or spray gun depending on the application, checking that it does not sag before proceeding with the entire piece.
Handling precaution: Gel de Sílice AT2 is an extremely fine and volatile powder. During weighing and incorporation, always wear a fine particle mask (FFP2 minimum), safety goggles and gloves. Work in a well-ventilated environment or with local extraction. Consult the product Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before using it for the first time.

Usage tips

Dose control to avoid overdoing it

An excess of Gel de Sílice AT2 can make the mix too thick and difficult to apply, or cause trapped micro-bubbles in the mass. Always start with 2–3% by weight and adjust in small increments (0.5% additional) if you need more body. In latex, the range can drop to 1–2% depending on the initial viscosity.

Lump-free incorporation

Fumed silica tends to form agglomerates when it comes into contact with liquids. To avoid this, sieve the powder over the resin while stirring constantly and use a spatula or wide-blade stirrer rather than a wire whisk. For large volumes, a low-speed mechanical stirrer ensures uniform dispersion without introducing air.

Use as a matting agent in silicone paints

When using AT2 as a matting agent in silicone paints for hyper-realistic effects, incorporate it into the base fraction before adding the pigments. This ensures better dispersion and prevents the pigments from interfering with its distribution. The use percentage in this case can be lower (0.5–1.5%) depending on the level of gloss you want to eliminate: the higher the dose, the more matte the finish.

Frequently asked questions

What is a thixotropic agent and what is it for?

A thixotropic agent is an additive that increases the viscosity of a liquid at rest but recovers its fluidity when mechanical stress is applied (when mixing or applying with a spatula). The result is a material that does not sag on its own, but can be worked and spread normally. Gel de Sílice AT2 acts in this way in resins, gels and paints, enabling applications on vertical surfaces or in thick layers without losing material.

Is it compatible with all types of resins?

Gel de Sílice AT2 is compatible with most reactive resin systems: polyurethane, epoxy, polyester and vinylester, as well as gels, paints and latex. It does not react chemically with the system — it simply modifies its rheology. In any case, it is recommended to carry out a small test before using it in production, especially in highly reactive systems or those with short gel times.

How much product should I add to achieve the thixotropic effect?

The recommended starting ratio is 3% by weight of the total mix. For example, if you prepare 200 g of resin, add about 6 g of Gel de Sílice AT2. Depending on the base viscosity of the resin and the level of body you need, you can adjust this percentage slightly, but it is recommended not to exceed 5–6% so as not to compromise workability.

Does it affect the cure of the resin or the final finish?

Gel de Sílice AT2 does not interfere with curing reactions and does not inhibit or retard the process. However, at high concentrations it can produce a slightly opaque or matte surface finish, which in many applications is precisely the desired effect. If you need a glossy finish, keep it to the minimum necessary or apply a top coat once the piece has cured.

Can it be used as a latex thickener?

Yes. Gel de Sílice AT2 works as a thickener in natural and synthetic latex, allowing thicker layers to be applied without the material sagging. The usual dosage in latex is slightly lower than that used in reactive resins (around 1–2%), as latex tends to have a higher base viscosity. Incorporate the powder with slow, steady movements to prevent lumps from forming.

What precautions should I take when handling it?

Gel de Sílice AT2 is a very fine and volatile powder that can easily become airborne. Always wear a particle mask (FFP2 minimum), safety goggles and gloves during handling. Work in a space with adequate ventilation or local extraction. Always consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before using it for the first time.

What sizes is it available in?

Gel de Sílice AT2 is sold in 1-litre buckets (approximately 65 g), 5-litre buckets (approximately 250 g) and 18-litre buckets (approximately 800 g). Since the product is very lightweight, the container volume is considerably larger than the net weight of the contents.

Can it be combined with other fillers such as microspheres or metallic fillers?

Yes. Gel de Sílice AT2 is compatible with other fillers such as hollow glass microspheres or brass powder. In these cases, first disperse the silica in the resin to achieve the desired thixotropy and then incorporate the filler. This helps keep the filler in suspension without settling during cure.
