Usage tips
Prep the skin thoroughly before applying
Cleanliness of the area is the single most important factor in the final result. Any trace of moisturiser, sweat or natural skin oil creates a barrier that prevents the transfer from adhering properly. Use isopropyl alcohol to degrease the area just before application and allow it to evaporate completely before placing the tattoo.
Blend the transfer with makeup for greater realism
FX tattoos work very well on their own, but on more demanding productions you can feather the edges with alcohol-activated makeup palettes to blend the transfer into the actor's exact skin tone. The Skin Illustrator Dark Fleshtone palettes are especially useful for darker skin tones, while the Flesh Tone and Complexion palettes cover lighter ranges.
Combine with custom transfers for more complex productions
If you need bespoke designs, larger-format tattoos or transfers for prosthetics, the Neills A4 transfer paper lets you create and print your own designs. You can also combine the transfers with artificial skin materials such as PTM Light Flesh or PTM Clear for applications on prosthetics or areas where you need greater durability and flexibility.
Frequently asked questions
How long do these temporary tattoos last on the skin?
Under normal conditions, transfers like TATÚ FX Fresh Bruises Small hold up well for between 4 and 8 hours, depending on sweating, movement and whether any setting product is applied on top. On set or on stage, it is common to touch up between takes during longer sessions. For greater durability, avoid high-friction areas and do not apply creams over the transfer.
Can they be applied on any skin tone?
TATÚ FX Fresh Bruises Small is designed with a colour range optimised for medium and dark skin tones, where hand-painted bruises typically require more layers and colour adjustments. On very fair skin, the designs also work, although the reddish and purplish tones may appear more saturated; in that case, it is advisable to soften them with alcohol-activated makeup.
How do you remove these transfers without damaging the skin?
The most effective and skin-friendly method is to use isopropyl myristate or an oil-based makeup remover. Apply the product over the transfer, allow it to work for a few seconds, then remove with a gauze pad or cotton round using gentle strokes. Avoid rubbing hard, especially on sensitive skin.
Is a setting spray necessary after applying the tattoo?
It is not essential, but on shoots or performances with a lot of movement, sweating or heat, applying a compatible makeup setting product can extend the life of the transfer. Make sure the setting product does not contain oils that could dissolve the transfer prematurely.
Can the tattoo be trimmed to fit the application area?
Yes. In fact, it is recommended to trim each design before applying it to remove any excess transparent film around the motif, which improves the visual integration on the skin and avoids shiny edges that may be visible on camera.
Can it be used on prosthetics or silicone materials?
Yes, water transfers can be applied to painted and sealed silicone surfaces, provided they are clean and free from grease or Release agent. For applications on encapsulation materials such as PTM Clear or PTM Light Flesh, test on a small area first to verify adhesion.
How many bruises does the sheet include and what sizes are they?
The A5 sheet of TATÚ FX Fresh Bruises Small includes 21 small bruises in different shapes and stages of progression. The "small" format is designed for areas such as knuckles, cheekbones, arms and smaller zones where a larger bruise would look out of proportion.
What is the difference between this product and hand-painted FX makeup?
Transfers like TATÚ FX offer speed, repeatability and consistency: every bruise looks exactly the same across all takes and does not require a makeup artist to replicate it. Hand-painted makeup allows for greater customisation and real-time adaptation, but demands more time and technical skill. On productions with many extras or limited resources, transfers are the most efficient option.
