What it is used for
This palette is aimed at FX makeup professionals, character makeup artists and special effects artists working with medium and dark skin tones. It is the go-to tool when you need maximum fidelity in tones that other palettes cannot reach.
- Character makeup for brown, dark or ethnically diverse skin tones
- Painting silicone and latex prosthetics for seamless integration with the actor's skin
- Shading and volume definition in special effects and wounds
- Blending transitions between light and dark tones on complex skin bases
- Mixing with other Skin Illustrator palettes to extend the color range
- Film productions, TV series, theatre and professional photography
- Artistic body painting on skin
How to use it
- Make sure the surface to be painted is clean, dry and free of grease.
- Activate the desired color by dampening the brush with isopropyl alcohol 99%, Skin Illustrator Activator or Skin Illustrator Slow Activator. Never use 70° alcohol, MEK, acetone or water.
- Pick up the pigment with the activated brush and test the coverage on the back of your hand before applying.
- Apply with a brush, sponge or airbrush depending on the desired effect. Colors can be mixed directly on the palette or on the surface.
- Allow to dry between layers. Alcohol-activated makeup dries quickly; you can speed up the process with cool air.
- Build up thin layers to gain depth and naturalness, especially in tone transitions.
- To remove the makeup, use Telesis Super Solv with a sponge or cotton pad.
Tips for use
Mixing palettes for a wider color range
The Dark Fleshtone Palette on its own covers medium and dark tones, but its true potential is unlocked by combining it with the Flesh Tone Palette or the Complexion Palette. Mixing colors from different palettes directly on the skin or prosthetic allows you to achieve any human tone with great precision.
Controlling drying speed
If you are working on large areas or need time to blend, use the Skin Illustrator Slow Activator instead of standard isopropyl alcohol. This slows down drying and allows for smoother blending. For fine detail work or quick touch-ups, isopropyl alcohol 99% is more agile.
Application on silicone and latex
When painting prosthetics, make sure the piece is fully cured and clean. Alcohol-activated colors penetrate encapsulated silicone and latex well, but a surface with release agent residue or grease can ruin adhesion. If in doubt, clean the prosthetic with isopropyl alcohol 99% before painting.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between these palettes and conventional makeup?
Alcohol-activated makeups, such as those in the Skin Illustrator range, are activated with isopropyl alcohol instead of water or oils. This gives them a resistance to sweat, water and friction far superior to conventional makeups, as well as greater color fidelity when dry. They are the standard in professional film and TV production.
Can I use these palettes on platinum silicone?
Yes. The Skin Illustrator Dark Fleshtone Palette is compatible with cured platinum silicone, tin silicone and latex. It is one of the most widely used painting systems in the special effects industry precisely because of its versatility on prosthetic materials.
Which alcohol should I use to activate the colors?
Always use isopropyl alcohol 99% or the specific Skin Illustrator activator. Pharmacy alcohol at 70% contains too much water and ruins the makeup: it does not activate correctly and can cause staining. Do not use MEK, acetone or water either.
How do you set the makeup so it holds up during filming?
Alcohol-activated makeup has excellent adhesion and staying power on its own once dry. For long productions or extreme conditions (heat, heavy sweating), apply thin layers and allow them to dry thoroughly between coats. You can use the spray activator to lightly reactivate the surface and achieve a better seal.
Can colors be mixed between different palettes of the same brand?
Yes, all colors in the Skin Illustrator range are miscible with each other. You can mix colors from the Dark Fleshtone with those from the Grunge Palette, the Necromania Palette or any other in the line, both on the palette and directly on the surface.
How is this makeup removed from the skin?
It is easily removed with Telesis Super Solv applied with a sponge or cotton pad. For sensitive skin, apply the solv gently and avoid excessive rubbing. Do not use water alone, as it does not dissolve alcohol-activated pigments.
Is it suitable for use with an airbrush?
Yes. By activating the colors with more isopropyl alcohol to obtain a more fluid consistency, the Skin Illustrator Dark Fleshtone Palette can be used perfectly with an airbrush. This allows very subtle transitions and gradients, especially useful on large surfaces or for body painting work.
Which other palettes complement this one best?
For skin tones, the ideal combination is with the Flesh Tone Palette (light tones) and the Complexion Palette (corrections and neutrals). If you are looking for ageing, wound or dirt effects, add the Grunge Palette or the Necromania Palette.
