What it is used for
Jesmonite AC100 is a highly versatile decorative casting material. This kit is specifically designed for making vases and large-volume hollow pieces, but the techniques learnt are directly transferable to other projects:
- Vases, plant pots and decorative pieces for indoor use
- Sculptures and ornamental objects
- Replicas of natural surfaces (stone, concrete, marble)
- Wall panels and decorative cladding
- Props and sets for film, television and theatre
- Casting boxes and decorative prototypes
- Objects for window display and interior design
How to use it
- Prepare your workspace: work on a flat surface at room temperature (between 18 °C and 25 °C). Protect the table and put on the included gloves.
- Mix liquid and base: first pour the Jesmonite AC100 liquid into the container and gradually add the powder base. The standard ratio is approximately 1 part liquid to 2.5 parts base by weight. Use the pipette to adjust the amount of liquid precisely.
- Add the pigment: incorporate the included pigments into the liquid before mixing it with the base, or directly into the wet mix. The pipette allows you to dose precisely for reproducible shades.
- Mix with the sticks: stir for at least 2–3 minutes until you obtain a smooth, lump-free paste. Scrape the sides and bottom of the container thoroughly.
- Pour into the silicone mould: the included moulds do not require a release agent. Fill the mould with the mix and gently tap it on the table to eliminate air bubbles.
- Layer technique for a hollow piece: for a lightweight vase, apply a first thin layer covering the entire inner surface of the mould. Allow to partially gel (approximately 15–20 min) and apply successive layers until the desired thickness is reached.
- Curing time: leave the piece to cure in the mould for a minimum of 2–4 hours before demoulding. Full cure is reached in 24–48 hours.
- Demould: carefully separate the silicone mould. Being silicone, removal is straightforward even with complex geometries.
- Finishing: once demoulded and fully cured, you can sand, paint or wax the piece to achieve the desired finish.
Usage tips
Consistency control
The amount of liquid directly determines the fluidity of the mix. For fluid castings in a closed mould, use the standard ratio. If you want a denser paste to apply by brush or spatula for laminating, reduce the liquid slightly. If you are working on more complex or larger-volume projects, the Acrystal thixotropic agent can help you gain body without losing workability.
Working with colour and decorative effects
Jesmonite AC100 accepts the included pigments and is compatible with a wide range of water-based colorants. For veining or marble effects, incompletely mix two different colours before pouring. For terrazzo or granite-style finishes, add small decorative aggregate particles to the mix. If you need more working time for complex effects, consult the Acrystal retarder.
Demoulding and mould care
The included silicone moulds do not require a release agent with Jesmonite AC100. After each use, clean any remaining material with water before it fully cures. Store the moulds flat or protected so they do not deform between uses. With proper care, the moulds can withstand dozens of castings.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need prior experience to use this kit?
No. The Jesmonite AC100 Starter Kit MAXI JARRÓN includes step-by-step instructions designed for beginners. The water-based material is more forgiving than polyurethane or epoxy resins and does not require extreme precision weighing. By following the kit instructions, the first results are perfectly usable.
Is it safe to work with this material at home?
Yes. Jesmonite AC100 contains no solvents or volatile organic compounds. It does not emit toxic vapours during mixing or curing. Working in a normally ventilated space and wearing the included gloves to protect skin from prolonged contact with the alkaline powder base is sufficient.
Can I make pieces in different colours with the kit pigments?
Yes. The kit includes 5 pigments of 10 ml that you can combine to obtain a wide range of shades. Use the pipette to dose precisely and reproduce colours between castings. For projects requiring large quantities of pigment or very specific colours, you can purchase additional pigments separately.
How many pieces can I make with the kit material?
It depends on the wall thickness you apply to each piece. Using the thin-layer technique for hollow vases, the kit (1 litre of liquid + 2.5 kg of base) yields several pieces the size of the included moulds. A solid casting with both moulds would consume most of the material in one go, while the layer laminating technique allows you to multiply the number of pieces.
Does the material hold up outdoors?
Jesmonite AC100 is primarily intended for indoor use. For prolonged outdoor or moisture exposure, it is recommended to apply a protective exterior sealer or varnish over the cured piece. Without additional protection, continuous exposure to water may affect the surface over time.
Can I use this material to make moulds?
No. Jesmonite AC100 is a casting and laminating material for making finished pieces, not for making moulds. To make flexible moulds for use with Jesmonite, you need a moulding silicone. At Feroca you will find the Mould-making kit for resins with everything needed for that stage.
Can the material be sanded, painted or sealed once cured?
Yes. Once fully cured (24–48 hours), Jesmonite AC100 can be sanded with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth imperfections. It accepts water-based acrylic paints, waxes, sealers and varnishes. It is not recommended to use solvent-based paints directly on the surface without a suitable primer.
What is the difference between this kit and buying Jesmonite AC100 in bulk?
The kit includes, in addition to the material, the silicone vase moulds, pigments, pipette, mixing sticks and gloves. It is the most practical option if you are starting from scratch. If you already have your own moulds and accessories and want to continue producing, Jesmonite AC100 in bulk is more cost-effective per unit of material.
