What it's used for
The HD Matting Spray Clear is designed to set and seal special effects and high-definition artistic makeup. It is especially useful on film sets, stage and photography where unwanted shine ruins the work. The Clear version suits any skin tone and is ideal when working with broad-spectrum makeup palettes.
- FX makeup sealing in film, television and theatre
- High-definition artistic makeup setting
- Elimination of unwanted shine on applied makeup
- Final makeup adjustment before filming or photography
- Matte finish over prosthetics painted with alcohol-based makeup
- Use over Skin Illustrator palette colours to remove residual shine
How to use it
- Complete the application of FX or artistic makeup on the skin or prosthetic.
- Make sure the makeup is dry before applying the spray.
- Shake the container well before use.
- Hold the spray at a distance of 20 to 30 cm from the surface to be treated.
- Apply a thin, even coat using gentle circular or sweeping motions.
- Allow to dry completely. If needed, apply a second coat for greater setting and matting.
- For a finish with more texture or selective shine, combine it with the Skin Illustrator Glazing Gels on areas where you do want luminosity.
Usage tips
Distance and coats
Always apply from the correct distance. Too close can build up product and create patches or alter the colour of the underlying makeup. A thin coat is preferable to a thick one: if you need more matte coverage, repeat with light coats allowing each one to dry in between.
Combining with Skin Illustrator palettes
The HD Matting Spray Clear is the natural sealer for Skin Illustrator palette colours. Use it after working with the Skin Illustrator Complexion Palette or the Dark Fleshtone Palette to unify the finish and set the work without altering the applied colours.
Choosing the right shade
If you are working with very dark skin tones, consider using the HD Matting Spray Mocha or the HD Matting Spray Shinto instead of the Clear. Although the Clear is transparent, the shades with integrated pigment can offer a more natural transition on darker skin or in work where the spray also provides coverage.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a satin-finish setting spray and a matte one?
A satin spray leaves a slight sheen that may be desirable in certain contexts, but in high-definition film and television that shine registers on camera and gives away the makeup. The HD Matting Spray Clear is formulated to leave a completely matte film, undetectable on camera, making it the professional choice for high-definition environments.
Can it be used over foam or silicone prosthetics?
Yes. The HD Matting Spray Clear can be applied over prosthetics painted with compatible makeup to set the work and eliminate shine. It is especially useful in the final step of the character makeup process, once all the paint is dry and the prosthetic is placed on the actor.
How long does it take to dry?
The water-based formula of the HD Matting Spray Clear dries quickly, within a few minutes under normal room temperature conditions. In very humid environments drying may be slightly slower. Always wait for the coat to be completely dry before applying a second one.
Does it alter the colour of the makeup when applied?
When applied correctly, the HD Matting Spray Clear does not alter the colour of the underlying makeup. If applied too close or in excessively thick coats some variation may occur. Respect the recommended application distance and work in thin coats for predictable results.
Is it suitable for sensitive skin?
The HD Matting Spray Clear is water-based, making it gentler than alcohol-based setters. However, if there is any concern with sensitive skin or previous reactions to cosmetics, it is advisable to carry out a patch test on a small area before use in production.
Can makeup be touched up after applying the spray?
Yes. Once dry, makeup set with HD Matting Spray Clear can be touched up locally. If you need to make touch-ups, apply the makeup over the area and seal again with another light coat of spray.
What is the difference between the three available shades?
The HD Matting Spray Clear is transparent and suits any skin tone. The HD Matting Spray Shinto and the HD Matting Spray Mocha incorporate pigment to better match darker or Mediterranean skin tones, providing both setting and a slight colour correction.
