What it is used for

The HD Matting Spray Shinto is designed for FX makeup professionals who need a definitive matte-finish seal in productions where HD cameras leave no room for shine. Its Shinto tone makes it ideal for medium and warm skin tones, providing natural unification while setting the makeup.

  • Sealing and setting FX makeup on film and television sets
  • Mattifying painted silicone prosthetics and pieces applied over skin
  • Adjusting and unifying makeup during long sessions or under perspiration
  • Matte finish over looks created with Skin Illustrator Flesh Tone Palette or Skin Illustrator Complexion Palette
  • Reducing shine on skin tones under direct studio lighting
  • Blending prosthetic edges with the natural skin tone
  • Use over any conventional makeup to unify the finish

How to use it

  1. Make sure the base makeup is completely dry and correctly applied before using the spray.
  2. Shake the bottle well for a few seconds to homogenise the formula.
  3. Hold the atomiser at a distance of 25 to 35 cm from the skin or the made-up surface.
  4. Apply in circular movements or light, even passes, without saturating any specific area.
  5. Allow to air-dry for a few seconds between coats if you need greater coverage or hold.
  6. If working over prosthetics with Skin Illustrator Glazing Gels previously applied in wet areas, apply the spray only over dry areas to avoid interfering with the effect.
  7. Check the result under production lighting before giving final approval.

Usage tips

Choose the right tone for the skin

The Shinto tone is formulated for medium and warm skin tones. If you are working with very light or neutral skin, consider the HD Matting Spray Clear, which adds no colour. For darker tones, the HD Matting Spray Mocha offers better integration. Using the wrong tone can slightly alter the colorimetry of the makeup under HD cameras.

Distance and amount: key to a matte result

Applying the spray too close or in excess causes build-up and can produce an uneven finish or even reactivate underlying makeup layers. Always work with short, light passes at the recommended distance, and wait a few seconds between coats if you need to build up hold.

Compatibility with Skin Illustrator palettes

The HD Matting Spray is designed to work within the same ecosystem as Skin Illustrator palettes. If you have built the look with the Skin Illustrator Dark Fleshtone Palette or other palettes from the same brand, the spray integrates without altering the colour mix or reactivating already dried pigments. For work with the Complexion Palette, apply the spray as a final step once the entire look is dry.

Frequently asked questions

Does this spray add colour to the skin or is it completely transparent?

The HD Matting Spray Shinto has a medium-warm tone that slightly unifies the makeup while setting it. It is not transparent like the Clear. If you need a seal with no colour added, go for the HD Matting Spray Clear.

Can it be used over silicone prosthetics?

Yes. The HD Matting Spray Shinto is compatible with painted and made-up silicone prosthetics. It helps mattify the finish and blend the edges of the prosthetic with the surrounding skin. Apply it as a final step, once the makeup on the prosthetic is completely dry.

How many coats can be applied?

You can apply several thin coats, allowing drying time between them. Saturating the area in a single pass is not recommended. In most cases, one or two passes are sufficient to achieve the desired matte finish and hold.

Is it safe for direct use on skin?

The HD Matting Spray Shinto is water-based and developed for professional cosmetic use in FX makeup. Even so, avoid direct contact with eyes and mucous membranes during application. On very sensitive skin, always carry out a patch test on a small area first.

What is the difference between the three available tones?

The three tones are designed for different skin tone ranges: the Clear is transparent and suitable for any skin tone; Shinto adds a medium-warm tone ideal for medium skin tones; and the Mocha is formulated for darker skin tones. Using the right tone ensures invisible integration under HD cameras.

Can it be used with makeup brands other than Skin Illustrator?

Yes. Although designed to integrate optimally with Skin Illustrator palettes, the HD Matting Spray Shinto works as a setting and mattifying spray over makeup from other systems, as long as they are completely dry before applying the spray.

How is the product removed at the end of the day?

As it is water-based, removal is carried out with the standard cleansing products used for FX makeup. Follow the usual makeup removal protocol according to the type of look applied.
