What it's used for

The Skin Illustrator Glazing Spray is designed for special effects makeup artists who need a wet, fresh and three-dimensional finish on skin or prosthetics. It works both as a final finishing coat and to reactivate and unify already-applied SFX effects.

  • Seal and set SFX makeup with a glossy finish
  • Simulate open wounds, cuts and lacerations with a wet appearance
  • Add depth to bruises and haematomas created with Skin Illustrator Glazing Gels
  • Recreate sunburns, redness and oedemas with a lifelike appearance
  • Simulate sweat, moisture or body fluids on skin or prosthetics
  • Unify and blend different colour layers applied with Skin Illustrator palettes
  • Add realism to skin disease effects and rashes
  • Work over gelatin, foam latex or encapsulated silicone prosthetics

How to use it

  1. Prepare clean and dry skin or prosthetic. Apply base makeup and colour effects beforehand using Skin Illustrator Flesh Tone or Skin Illustrator Complexion palettes.
  2. If combining with colour gels, apply Skin Illustrator Glazing Gels first in the areas where you want transparent colour.
  3. Shake the Glazing Spray container well before use.
  4. Hold the spray approximately 20-30 cm from the area to be treated.
  5. Apply in thin, even layers using short, continuous movements. Do not saturate all at once.
  6. Allow a few seconds to dry between coats to control the level of accumulated gloss.
  7. Repeat application until the desired wet effect level is achieved.
  8. If you need a matte finish for healthy skin areas, combine with HD Matting Spray Clear or HD Matting Spray Shinto on adjacent areas.

Usage tips

Control the distance to master the gloss

The closer the spray, the higher the product concentration and the greater the gloss. Applying from further away gives a more subtle, satin finish. Test on the back of your hand before moving to the actor to calibrate the intensity needed for each scene.

Combine matte and gloss for maximum realism

Within a single effect, wound or fluid areas call for gloss; the surrounding healthy skin should remain matte. Use the Glazing Spray only where you want the wet effect and apply HD Matting Spray Clear to mattify the rest. This combination is the most convincing on 4K camera.

Quick touch-ups on set

The Glazing Spray is also a key ally for touch-ups between takes. If the wet effect has lost its vibrancy, a couple of quick sprays restore it without needing to redo all the work. Always keep the bottle to hand during shooting.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be applied directly on skin?

Yes. The Skin Illustrator Glazing Spray is specifically formulated for use on human skin. Its water base makes it safe for face and body applications in professional SFX makeup contexts.

Is it compatible with silicone and foam latex prosthetics?

Yes. It works perfectly on foam latex, gelatin and encapsulated silicone prosthetics. It is commonly used to bring prosthetic edges and transition zones between prosthetics and real skin to life.

Is the glossy finish permanent or can it be mattified afterwards?

The glossy effect can be reduced or eliminated by applying a mattifying spray such as HD Matting Spray Clear on top. This gives you full control over the final finish in each area of the effect.

How long does the effect last during a long shoot?

Durability depends on the actor's sweat, heat and movement. Under normal set conditions, the wet effect may need touch-ups between takes. The advantage of the spray is that touch-ups are quick and do not disturb the colour layers already applied.

Can it be used over conventional makeup as well as SFX makeup?

Yes, although its most common use is over SFX makeup. It can also be applied over standard character makeup when you want to add a touch of gloss or a localised wet effect.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

The product is formulated for professional use. On particularly sensitive skin or skin with conditions, it is advisable to perform a patch test on a small area in advance of the shoot. If in doubt, consult the production's medical department.

How is it removed at the end of the day?

Being water-based, removal is straightforward with warm water and a gentle cleanser. If applied over SFX makeup with more resistant fixatives, adapt the removal process to the most resistant product in the layer stack.

What is the difference between this spray and the Glazing Gels?

The Skin Illustrator Glazing Gels are transparent colour gels applied with a brush to add bruise, blood or redness tones to precise areas. The Glazing Spray is a colourless transparent finish applied as an aerosol to unify and add wet gloss to the entire worked area. They are complementary products, not equivalents.
