What it is used for
This product is designed to convincingly recreate the appearance of infected tissue, suppurating wounds and putrefaction effects in film, television, theatre, horror photography and character makeup events. Its semi-liquid consistency and combination of yellow-green pigments with opacifiers make it directly applicable without any prior mixing.

How to use it
- Prepare the application area: clean the skin or prosthetic and make sure it is dry before applying the effect.
- If working on a silicone or foam prosthetic, apply the base makeup and blended edges first before adding the pus.
- Use the minimum amount needed: the manufacturer recommends applying small quantities to achieve a believable result. Too much reduces realism.
- Apply with a brush, silicone spatula or directly from the container in a controlled drip, depending on the desired effect.
- Combine with FX blood or scab blood to achieve infected wounds with a multi-layer appearance.
- If the effect needs to be maintained on set for an extended period, avoid areas with excessive sweating as, being water-based, it may dilute.
- To remove, simply use warm water and mild soap. No solvent required.
Usage tips
Dosage: less is more
The key to realism with the Synthetic Pus Effect is restraint. A small amount applied inside an incision or around a wound prosthetic is far more convincing than a generous application. Work in thin layers and add more if needed; it is much easier to build up than to take away.
Combining with other effects
For complex wounds combining dried blood, scab and infection, apply the more solid materials first: Scab Paste or Clotted Wound Filler for the structure, and reserve the pus for the last step, as its fluid consistency settles over everything else and provides the final wet touch. If you need to simulate burned and infected tissue simultaneously, combine it with Gelafix Skin for the burned areas.
Storage and shelf life
Store the container tightly closed, away from heat sources and direct light. The glycerin-based aqueous formula is stable at room temperature, but improper sealing can alter consistency and colour over time. If you notice phase separation, shake gently before use. Once opened, preferably use within the same working season.

Can it be applied directly on real skin?
Yes. The Synthetic Pus Effect has hygienic cosmetic quality, so it is formulated for contact with healthy skin. Even so, if you have sensitive skin or real wounds, avoid direct contact and apply it over a prosthetic or prior barrier.
How is the product removed after a shoot?
Being a water-based glycerin preparation, it is easily removed with warm water and mild soap. No solvents or specific makeup removers are needed.
Can it be mixed with artificial blood to customise the colour?
Yes. Combining the synthetic pus with FX blood allows you to obtain pinkish or reddish tones that simulate more acute or fresh infections. Mix in small proportions until you achieve the desired tone.
Does it hold up well under film or theatre lighting?
The formulation is stable under studio lighting. Intense heat from spotlights may accelerate surface drying or loss of shine. For long sessions, keep the container on hand for touch-ups if needed.
Does it work well on silicone or foam latex prosthetics?
Yes, on both substrates. On foam latex adhesion is naturally good. On platinum silicone it is advisable to encapsulate and paint the prosthetic before applying the pus as a final touch, as silicone does not absorb water-based products and the effect remains more fluid and dynamic.
How much do I need for a one-day shoot?
The manufacturer recommends using the product in small quantities. For spot effects on one or two wounds, the 100 ml jar is enough for multiple working days. If you have several characters or many touch-ups throughout the day, always keep a spare unit on hand.
Is it suitable for infected scars together with Collodion?
Yes, it is a common combination. Collodion creates the tension of the scar on the skin and the synthetic pus is applied on top to simulate it suppurating. The result is very convincing in close-up.
Is it suitable for zombie and undead character makeup?
It is one of its most common uses. For undead characters, combine the pus with Clotted Wound Filler for wounds with depth and with pale base makeup. The effect of decomposing tissue with suppurating areas is very well achieved.
