What it is used for
Collodion is a classic tool in the arsenal of any special effects makeup artist, theatrical character artist or film professional. It produces convincing scars immediately without the need for prosthetics or complex materials, directly on the skin of the actor or model.
- Cut, burn or trauma scars for film, television and theatre
- Skin ageing and deterioration effects
- Quick character makeup in productions with limited preparation time
- Superficial wound effects for LARP, cosplay and themed events
- Training practice in artistic makeup and FX schools
- Complement to adhesive silicone makeup prosthetics when integrating transition areas
How to use it
- Clean and dry the skin area where you are going to apply the effect thoroughly. The skin must be free of creams, sweat or oil to ensure adhesion.
- Apply a thin layer of Collodion over the desired area using the product's brush or applicator.
- Wait a few seconds until the product is partially dry but still active (it becomes slightly matte and tacky).
- Press the skin to form the desired fold and hold it in place until the Collodion dries completely. The formed fold creates the optical illusion of a scar.
- Once dry, colour the effect with Fleet Street DirtWorks Powders or other FX makeups to add realism: redness, uneven pigmentation, visual depth.
- To remove the Collodion, gently lift the edge of the film and remove with oil or a suitable skin-safe solvent.
- After use, always apply a moisturising cream to the treated area to restore skin hydration.
Tips for use
Control the layer thickness
A layer that is too thick slows drying and makes it harder to form the fold. A layer that is too thin may not provide enough tension on the skin. Practising beforehand on the back of your hand will help you gauge the exact amount before working on the actor.
Work quickly and decisively
Drying is very fast, so define the area and the direction of the fold clearly before applying. Keeping the skin properly taut during setting is what determines the final shape of the scar. If the result is not as expected, remove it and start again: the process is reversible.
Integrate the effect with FX makeup
Collodion alone creates the shape, but realism comes with makeup. Use character makeup powders to simulate redness, scabs or ageing. If the effect needs to coexist with silicone prosthetics, consider using Skin Imitator for the transition areas between the prosthetic and natural skin.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be used on any area of the body?
Collodion is designed to be applied on healthy, intact skin. It works best on areas with some skin mobility (cheeks, forehead, neck, arms) where the fold forms easily. Avoid applying it near eyes, lips or mucous membranes, and do not use it on irritated skin or open wounds.
How long does the effect last once applied?
Collodion maintains the effect for several hours under normal conditions. Sweat, excessive heat and intense movement of the area can reduce its durability. For long productions, it is advisable to check and touch up the effect between takes or acts.
How is it removed without damaging the skin?
Gently lift the edge of the dried Collodion film and remove it with the help of a makeup-removing oil or a skin-specific solvent. Never pull the film off abruptly. Afterwards, clean the area thoroughly and apply a moisturising cream to restore skin hydration.
Is it necessary to fix it with an additional product?
It is not essential, but for greater durability during long shoots or live performances, you can apply a breathable makeup setting spray over the finished effect. Make sure it is skin-compatible and does not interfere with the visual finish of the scar.
Can I colour the effect directly?
Yes. Once dry, Collodion accepts FX makeup applied over it. Fleet Street DirtWorks Powders are particularly effective for adding wound tones, dirt and ageing with full control.
Does it cause allergic reactions?
Collodion contains nitrocellulose and solvents. Although it is a widely used product in professional character makeup, it can cause a reaction in people sensitive to these components. Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin before using it on the actor, especially if it is the first time.
Can it be used over silicone prosthetics?
Collodion is intended to be applied directly on skin, not on silicone. To blend a silicone prosthetic with the surrounding skin and create transition or additional detail effects, use specific products such as Skin Imitator.
Is it suitable for children or amateur use?
Collodion is a professional product containing volatile solvents. It is not recommended for use on children or in environments without adequate ventilation. For amateur use or low-demand contexts, make sure to follow the safety instructions and always carry out the sensitivity test beforehand.
