What it's used for
Scab Paste is designed for special effects makeup and professional character work. Its granulated texture mimics the appearance of coagulated, dried blood — ideal for wounds that have been exposed for some time. Works on both natural skin and silicone or foam latex prosthetics.
- Recreating scabs and aged wounds in film and television character makeup
- Makeup effects for theatre, performances and horror events
- Application over silicone or foam latex prosthetics to integrate the haemorrhagic effect
- Simulating soiled dressings or bandages with coagulated blood for props
- Special effects makeup at festivals, survival scenes and high-fidelity cosplay
- Quick character makeup directly on skin, no prosthetics required
How to use it
- Prepare the application area: clean and dry the skin or prosthetic before applying the product.
- Open the container and take the required amount using a spatula, a thick brush or directly with your fingers.
- Place the paste on the chosen area and spread or build it up depending on the desired effect: piled up for thick scabs, spread out for surface dried blood.
- Allow to air dry. The matte finish will appear as the moisture evaporates.
- If you need greater adhesion or durability, apply a Fixing Spray once the paste is fully dry.
- When done, remove with warm water and soap. For fabrics, wash at 40 °C with detergent.
Usage tips
Layers and volume for realistic scabs
To achieve a convincing raised scab, apply a thin first layer and allow it to partially dry. Then add a thicker second layer at the centre of the wound. The contrast between thin edges and a bulkier core adds depth and realism to the effect. If working on a silicone prosthetic, make sure the surface is fully cured before applying the paste.
Combining with other fake bloods
Scab Paste works very well layered with fluid bloods. A base of fresh liquid blood underneath the paste adds the shine of a recent haemorrhage, while the paste on top recreates the scab that forms hours later. You can use Fleet Street Drying Blood Fresh around the edges to simulate active bleeding around the scab.
Storage and consistency
Close the container tightly after each use to prevent the paste from drying out in the jar. If you notice it has lost some moisture and is too thick to spread, add a few drops of water and mix with a spatula until the consistency is restored. Do not expose the product to extreme temperatures or prolonged direct sunlight.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be used directly on sensitive skin?
Scab Paste is formulated with food-grade ingredients (water, sorbitol, food colouring) and is safe for use on skin. However, if you have very sensitive or atopic skin, it is advisable to do a patch test on a small area before general application. Always remove with warm water and mild soap.
How long does it take to dry?
Drying time depends on the thickness of the layer applied and environmental conditions. In thin layers, the matte finish is achieved within a few minutes. For thick buildups to create raised scabs, it may take between 10 and 20 minutes to dry completely. A warm, dry environment speeds up the process.
Does it permanently stain clothing?
No. Scab Paste can be washed out of most fabrics with a 40 °C cycle and regular detergent. If there is accidental contact with clothing during a shoot or performance, don't worry: it does not leave permanent stains on most fabrics. Wash as soon as possible to make removal easier.
Is it compatible with silicone and foam latex prosthetics?
Yes. Scab Paste adheres well to fully cured skin silicone and foam latex surfaces. It is the ideal finish to blend a prosthetic with the actor's skin, adding the haemorrhagic detail that makes the wound believable. Make sure the prosthetic is dry and properly adhered before applying the paste.
How do you set it to last longer during a long performance?
Once the paste is dry, you can apply a makeup Fixing Spray over it. This increases its resistance to rubbing and perspiration — critical for long theatrical performances or shoots under hot lights. Do not apply the Fixing Spray before the paste is completely dry, as it could affect the matte finish.
Can it be mixed with other fake blood products to adjust the colour?
Yes. You can mix Scab Paste with Fleet Street Drying Blood Dark for deeper, darker tones, or with Pasta Fleet Street Blood to adjust the texture. Experiment with small amounts before the final application.
How much product is needed to create a medium-sized wound?
For a medium-sized wound or scab (approximately 5 x 5 cm), a small amount is enough: just a few grams of paste. The 60 g jar provides multiple applications within a single project or across several makeup sessions.
Does it have a strong smell that might bother the actor?
Scab Paste's formula includes mint among its ingredients, giving it a soft, fresh scent — nothing unpleasant. It does not emit irritating vapours or have a solvent smell. It is perfectly tolerable even in applications close to the face.
