What it is used for
Fresh Scratch is designed for special effects makeup and character work, where convincing and safe-on-skin representations of dry-scabbed wounds are required. It is the ideal complement for FX work in film, television, theatre, live-action role-play events, and Halloween.
- Simulation of scabs and recently healed wounds
- Scratch, graze, and skin abrasion effects
- Special effects makeup for audiovisual productions
- Theatre characterisation and live performances
- Themed events, Halloween, and live-action role-play (LARP)
- Complement over silicone skin or gelatine prosthetics
How to use it
- Clean and dry the area of skin where you are going to apply the product.
- Pick up a small amount of Fresh Scratch with a makeup sponge or a spatula.
- Apply the product to the desired area by dabbing or spreading it depending on the effect you are looking for (scab, scratch, abrasion).
- Allow to dry completely without touching or disturbing the area. During drying, any contact can cause unwanted staining.
- Once dry, the finish is stable. You can enhance the effect with fresh liquid blood around the wound for greater realism.
- To remove the product, apply warm water and mild soap and rub gently until it is completely gone.
Usage tips
Combine textures for a more realistic result
A scabbed wound gains credibility when you combine Fresh Scratch with liquid blood at the edges. Use Fleet Street Drying Blood Fresh for fresh drips or Fleet Street Drying Blood Dark for darker, older areas. Pasta Fleet Street Blood is ideal for dense accumulations in cavities or at the wound edges.
Do not touch during drying
This is the most common mistake. Fresh Scratch needs to rest without any contact while it sets. If you disturb the area before it is completely dry, the product will shift and leave difficult-to-control stains. Plan the process with enough time before the performance or shoot.
Layered application for greater volume
If you want to simulate a thicker or raised scab, apply a first thin layer, let it dry completely, and then add a second layer on top. This method gives the effect more depth and allows you to better control the final result.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to apply directly to the skin?
Yes. Fresh Scratch is formulated without solvents and is suitable for use on skin. However, as with any special effects makeup product, it is recommended to do a patch test on a small area before applying it over larger areas, especially on sensitive skin.
How long does it take to dry?
Drying is fast, although the exact time depends on the amount applied and environmental conditions (temperature and humidity). Under normal workshop or set conditions, a thin layer dries within a few minutes. A thicker layer may require a little more time.
Can it be applied over silicone or gelatine prosthetics?
Yes. Fresh Scratch works very well over silicone skin prosthetics and over gelatine prosthetics, making it a common finish in professional special effects makeup. Apply it in the same way as on skin and leave to dry without disturbing.
Does it stain clothing or props?
During the drying process, the product can stain if transferred by contact. Once completely dry on the skin it does not stain. Protect nearby garments and props until the product has fully set.
How is it removed at the end of a shoot or performance?
Removal is straightforward: warm water and mild soap are sufficient to remove Fresh Scratch from the skin without the need for solvents or specific products.
Can it be combined with other artificial blood products?
Yes, and it is the most common approach in special effects. Fresh Scratch acts as the solid, scabbed part of the wound, while products such as Fleet Street Drying Blood Fresh or Fleet Street Drying Blood Dark provide the liquid part and the drips. The combination of both textures gives a much more convincing result.
What is blood paste for compared to liquid blood or scab?
Each product has a different function within wound characterisation. Fresh Scratch simulates the dry scab, liquid bloods imitate fresh drips, and Pasta Fleet Street Blood is ideal for dense accumulations, wound edges, or to add volume and consistency where a liquid blood would flow too freely.
How to achieve the most realistic complete wound effect?
For a complete wound effect, the standard approach is to work in layers: first model the raised area with a prosthetic or dense paste, then apply Fresh Scratch for the central scab, and finally add liquid blood at the edges and drips. The combination of textures and colours (bright red, dark red) is what gives depth and credibility to the result.
