What they are used for

TF blood capsules are a classic tool in live special effects. Their mechanism is instant and requires no prior preparation: place them in the mouth and bite at the exact moment of the performance. They are ideal for:

  • Theatre scenes or live performances where the actor needs to spit blood realistically
  • Short film shoots, music videos and low-budget productions
  • Halloween makeup, themed parties and roleplay or LARP events
  • Fight scenes, vampires, zombies or any character that requires blood in the mouth
  • Complementing character makeup created with SFX flesh tone palettes or prosthetic wounds

How to use

  1. Open the pack and take out the number of capsules you need for the performance.
  2. Discreetly place the capsule or capsules in your mouth, between the cheek and the gum, without biting yet.
  3. At the precise moment of the scene, bite down firmly on the capsule to break the gelatin.
  4. The powder will immediately mix with saliva, creating the visual blood effect.
  5. Spit or let it flow as the performance requires. The effect is instant and convincing.
  6. Rinse your mouth with water after the scene to remove any dye residue.

Tips for use

Rehearse before the performance

Practice with a capsule before the shoot or show day to time the bite correctly and control the amount of saliva present. A too-dry mouth can slow down the powder's reaction. Taking a small sip of water just beforehand helps achieve the optimal effect.

Combine with wound makeup for greater realism

The capsules work brilliantly combined with prosthetic makeup or SFX paints around the mouth, lips or chin. Use a complexion palette or a dark flesh tone palette to create bruises or wounds around the mouth that complement the spat-blood effect. For dry or coagulated blood on the exterior, combine with Fleet Street Drying Blood Dark.

Storage and preservation

Store the capsules in a cool, dry place away from moisture. The gelatin can soften if exposed to high heat or humidity, making it difficult to place them correctly in the mouth before a performance. Do not leave them in the car in summer or near sources of steam.

Frequently asked questions

Are they safe to put in the mouth?

Yes. TF blood capsules are formulated for oral use. The capsule is made of gelatin and the inner powder is composed of food-grade or cosmetic ingredients (sucrose, sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, salt, etc.) along with dyes. They should not be swallowed in large quantities, but contact with the mouth and saliva is safe.

Do they stain teeth or clothing?

The dye may leave a slight temporary stain on teeth and fabrics. In the mouth, simply rinse well with water. On clothing, it is advisable to rinse with cold water as soon as possible. Avoid dry rubbing to prevent spreading the stain.

How many capsules are used per scene?

It depends on the desired effect. For a subtle scene (split lip, discreet bloody mouth), a single capsule is enough. For more dramatic effects, some actors use two or three at once. The pack of 10 units gives plenty of room to rehearse and repeat takes.

Do they work outdoors or in the heat?

Yes, although heat may slightly soften the gelatin if the capsules are stored for a long time in a warm environment before use. For outdoor shoots in high temperatures, keep them in a cool place until the moment of use.

Can they be used with children for a school performance?

Although the ingredients are low in toxicity, use with young children should always be supervised by an adult. It is essential to ensure the child understands they must not swallow the whole capsule and that they can spit out the contents without any problem. Check with the event organiser if in doubt.

What is the difference between these capsules and bottled liquid blood?

The capsules are specifically designed for in-mouth effects: they are discreet, instant and require no prior application. Liquid blood such as Fleet Street Drying Blood Fresh or Fleet Street Blood paste is applied to skin, prosthetic wounds or external surfaces to create pools, trails or scabs. Both formats complement each other in a complete SFX makeup look.

How long does the effect last once the capsule is bitten?

The visual effect is immediate and lasts as long as the actor does not rinse their mouth. Saliva continues to dissolve the powder for one to two minutes, maintaining the active blood appearance. For long scenes or multiple takes, it may be necessary to repeat with a new capsule.
