What it is used for

The five colours in this kit are selected for dark, horror, fantasy and non-naturalistic character effects. It can be combined with AcrylStains Film Standard or AcrylStains Character for longer-lasting tooth effects on set.
- Horror and zombie characterisations (black, greenish or orange mouth)
- Fantasy effects and science fiction characters
- Theatre, opera and performing arts with close-ups
- Audiovisual productions requiring on-camera oral colouring
- Alternative fashion or editorial photo shoots
- Disease, poison or decomposition effects in SFX makeup
- Combined use with dental prosthetics or mouth appliances for added drama
How to use it
- Before applying, make sure the mouth is clean and free of any food or drink residue.
- To cover the entire oral cavity, add 3–4 drops directly onto the tongue and move them around the whole mouth for a few seconds.
- For localised application (lips, gums, specific area), use a cotton swab or fine brush and coat only the desired area.
- If you want a more subtle effect, dilute the product with a few drops of water before applying.
- Mix two or more colours from the kit to obtain custom intermediate shades.
- To enhance the effect, combine it with AcrylStains Film Standard applied beforehand on the teeth.
- To remove the colour from the mouth, brush the teeth with toothpaste and rinse with water. Repeat if necessary.
- To remove the colour from the skin (lips), wash with soap and water or shaving cream and rinse thoroughly.
Usage tips
Mixing colours to expand the palette
The five shades in Kit 2 can be combined with each other to generate a much wider range. Mixing Sludge Black with Mean Green produces a swampy green ideal for zombies. Rust Orange with Turning Yellow gives very convincing jaundice or disease tones. Always test mixes in a small container before applying to control the final shade. If you need a colour palette to complete the facial makeup, the Skin Illustrator palettes are a natural complement to any working kit.
Dilution and intensity control
Colour intensity depends directly on the amount applied and the degree of dilution with water. For more subtle effects in projects where extreme contrast is not required, add a few drops of water to the product before application. For maximum saturation, use the product undiluted and avoid drinking water during the take or scene. Bear in mind that natural saliva tends to dilute the effect over time, so a touch-up may be needed during long shoots.
Compatibility with other SFX makeup materials
Mouth FX is a product exclusively for use on the mouth and lips. It is not formulated for application on silicone prosthetics or on skin other than the lips. For tooth effects that require greater durability during filming, combine it with AcrylStains Character, which provides a base coat on tooth enamel before applying the oral colour. If you are looking to complete the full character makeup, the Skin Illustrator Complexion and Skin Illustrator Dark Fleshtone palettes offer perfect chromatic integration with the darker tones in this kit.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe if this product comes into contact with saliva or is accidentally ingested?
Yes. Mouth FX Kit 2 is made entirely with FDA-certified food-grade ingredients, so contact with saliva and possible accidental ingestion of small amounts is safe. It is not designed for direct consumption, but its formula ensures safety in oral use.
How long does the colour effect last once applied?
Duration depends on the level of salivation, liquid intake and mouth movement. Under normal filming or performance conditions, the colour holds for between 15 and 30 minutes before needing a touch-up. Avoiding drinking water between application and the take extends the life of the effect.
Can this product be used on people with food allergies?
Mouth FX Kit 2 is formulated without gluten, peanuts or sugar. Even so, if the actor or model has specific allergies or intolerances, it is advisable to review the manufacturer's full ingredient list before use.
Does it permanently stain teeth or tooth enamel?
No. Mouth FX is a temporary dye designed to be removed easily with normal brushing using toothpaste and water. On people with very porous teeth or specific dental treatments, some additional brushing may be required, but it does not cause permanent staining under normal use conditions.
Can it be applied on the lips as well as inside the mouth?
Yes. Application with a fine brush or cotton swab on the lips is one of the methods recommended by the manufacturer. It is particularly effective for creating black, purple or greenish lip effects in horror or fantasy characterisations. To remove the colour from the lip skin, simply wash with soap and water.
What is the difference between Kit 1 and Kit 2?
Both kits contain five colours, a carrying case and a carabiner clip, but the shade selection is different. Mouth FX Kit 1 includes a different colour range aimed at other effects. Kit 2 features Sludge Black, Violent Violet, Mean Green, Rust Orange and Turning Yellow, designed for high-intensity horror, disease and fantasy characterisations.
Can it be used together with dental prosthetics or mouth appliances?
Yes. Mouth FX is compatible for use alongside dental prosthetics or special effects mouth appliances. The combination enhances the final result and allows for much more elaborate effects. For more permanent staining on prosthetics or tooth enamel during filming, combine it with AcrylStains Film Standard.
Can the colours in the kit be mixed with each other?
Yes. One of the advantages of Mouth FX is the ability to mix colours to expand the available palette. Simply combine the desired drops in a small container before application. This allows you to create intermediate shades and customise the effect to suit the character's needs.
