What it is used for

Mouth FX Kit 1 is designed for special effects makeup professionals, actors, and makeup artists who need to color the mouth quickly, safely, and reversibly. The five colors in the kit cover the most in-demand oral effects for film sets, theater, and extreme character events:

  • Putrefaction and necrosis effects (Down Brown, Pitch Black)
  • Oral wounds and blood (Blood Red)
  • Disease, poisoning, or zombie (Yuck Yellow, Feeling Blue)
  • Full coloring of the oral cavity for close-up shots
  • Localized application on lips, gums, or tongue with a brush or cotton swab
  • Combination with AcrylStains Character or AcrylStains Film Standard for longer-lasting dental effects during filming
  • Mixing colors within the kit to achieve custom shades

How to use it

  1. Choose the application method based on the desired effect: full mouth coverage or localized application.
  2. For full coverage: add 3–4 drops onto the tongue and move them around the inside of the mouth until the color is evenly distributed.
  3. For localized application (lips, gums, teeth): apply directly with a cotton swab or a fine brush to the desired area.
  4. For custom shades: mix colors directly in the mouth or on a clean palette before applying.
  5. For more subtle effects, dilute the color with a few drops of water before applying.
  6. Combine with AcrylStains Character on the teeth for longer-lasting, higher-contrast effects.
  7. To remove: brush teeth with toothpaste and rinse with water. Repeat if necessary.
  8. To remove residue from skin (lips or around the mouth): wash with soap and water. Repeat if necessary.

Usage tips

Mixing colors to expand the palette

The five colors in Kit 1 can be combined with each other to achieve a much wider range. Down Brown with Pitch Black creates deep necrosis tones; Blood Red with Yuck Yellow simulates infection or bloody pus. If you need a more extensive palette, Mouth FX Kit 2 expands the range with five additional colors.

Controlling intensity and coverage

The amount of product directly determines color saturation. With 1–2 drops you get translucent coverage, ideal for mild illness effects or early-stage character work. With 4–5 drops and full distribution you achieve maximum opacity. Outdoors or in warm conditions, color may lighten due to salivation: keep the kit on hand for quick touch-ups between takes.

Combining with facial SFX makeup

For a coherent character look, complement the oral effect with Skin Illustrator makeup palettes: the Skin Illustrator Flesh Tone Palette or the Skin Illustrator Dark Fleshtone Palette allow you to unify the skin tone around the mouth with the oral color, achieving a more convincing result on camera.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to use this type of coloring inside the mouth?

Yes. Mouth FX Kit 1 is formulated exclusively with FDA-approved food-grade ingredients. It contains no gluten, sugar, peanuts, or animal derivatives, and has been specifically designed for oral use in character makeup and special effects contexts.

How long does the color last in the mouth during use?

Duration depends on salivation, mouth movement, and whether drinking or eating occurs. Under normal filming or theater conditions, the color holds sufficient intensity for several tens of minutes. It is recommended to keep the kit on hand for touch-ups between takes or scenes.

Can the product be accidentally swallowed?

Since it is formulated with food-grade ingredients, accidental ingestion of small amounts does not pose a risk. Even so, it is not designed to be deliberately ingested. If in doubt, consult the manufacturer's technical data sheet.

Is it difficult to remove from teeth and the mouth?

No. Simply brush your teeth with toothpaste and rinse with water. In most cases, one or two passes are sufficient. For residue on the skin around the mouth, soap and water are enough. Easy removal is one of the key advantages of this product compared to other dental coloring options.

Can this product be used on dentures or dental prosthetics?

Yes, it can be applied to dentures and prosthetics. In these cases, removal is even easier, as they can be cleaned directly under running water with a brush. Always check that the prosthetic material does not become permanently stained by doing a prior test on a non-visible area.

What is the difference between this kit and Kit 2?

Kit 1 includes Down Brown, Pitch Black, Blood Red, Yuck Yellow, and Feeling Blue, geared towards darkness, necrosis, and blood effects. Mouth FX Kit 2 features five different colors that expand the available palette. Both kits are compatible and their colors can be mixed together.

For what type of effects does it combine best with longer-lasting dental coloring?

For effects requiring greater permanence on teeth during long shoots, Mouth FX can be combined with AcrylStains Film Standard or AcrylStains Character, which stain tooth enamel more stably throughout the working day.

How do you achieve more precise application in specific areas?

Use a cotton swab or a fine makeup brush to apply the product directly to the desired area: lips, gums, tooth edges, or tongue. This method is especially useful when a localized effect is needed without coloring the entire oral cavity.
