What it is used for
The Bloody Two Duo is designed to recreate wounds, gore effects, zombies and any situation where you need convincing blood quickly and with control. As a two-colour complementary palette, you can combine both shades to achieve different stages of blood: fresh, dried or darkened over time.
- Characterisation of open wounds, cuts and lacerations
- Zombie effects and gore makeup for film and television
- Continuity touch-ups on set (On Set format)
- Halloween characterisations and themed events
- Painting over previously characterised silicone and latex prosthetics
- Creating layers of fresh blood (Blood Tone) and aged or coagulated blood (Aged Blood)
- Theatre and performance work where sweat and movement resistance is required
How to use it
- Make sure the surface (skin, silicone or latex) is clean, dry and free of grease.
- Dampen the brush or sponge with 99% isopropyl alcohol, Skin Illustrator Activator or Slow Activator. Never use 70° alcohol, MEK, acetone or water.
- Load the brush with the desired colour (Blood Tone for fresh blood, Aged Blood for darkened or dried blood).
- Apply to the area to be characterised with controlled strokes. You can combine both shades to add depth and realism.
- Allow to dry briefly. The ink sets as the alcohol evaporates.
- Repeat layers if you need greater coverage or intensity.
- For continuity touch-ups on set, reload the brush with the minimum amount of activator needed so as not to dissolve previous layers.
- To remove the makeup, use Telesis Super Solv or Telesis Makeup Remover.
Usage tips
Choose the activator based on your available time
The standard Skin Illustrator Activator dries quickly, ideal for fast applications. The Slow Activator extends working time, allowing you to blend more smoothly and create softer gradients between Blood Tone and Aged Blood. On set, 99% isopropyl alcohol is the most accessible alternative and works perfectly as an emergency activator.
Layering for a more realistic result
Do not apply all the colour in a single layer. Work from less to more: start with Aged Blood in shadow areas or older blood zones, allow to dry, then add Blood Tone on top for fresh blood areas. This layering method adds three-dimensionality and prevents flat or artificial results.
Compatibility with prosthetics and porous surfaces
On painted silicone, make sure the base paint layers are fully cured before applying the palette on top. On latex, adhesion is very good, but avoid bending or stretching the painted area excessively to prevent cracking the colour film. On skin, the palette holds up well against sweat once dry, but in very intense action scenes touch-ups with minimal activator may be necessary.
Frequently asked questions
What is used to activate these alcohol-activated makeup palettes?
The Bloody Two Duo is activated with Skin Illustrator Activator, Skin Illustrator Slow Activator or 99% isopropyl alcohol. It is essential to use high-purity alcohol: never use 70° alcohol, MEK, acetone or water, as these do not correctly activate the ink and can ruin the result.
Are these paints safe to use directly on skin?
Yes. Skin Illustrator palettes are specifically formulated for use on skin. They are widely used in film, television and theatre productions worldwide. However, as with any cosmetic product, a sensitivity patch test on a small area is recommended before extensive application, especially on sensitive skin.
Do these palettes work on silicone and latex prosthetics?
Yes. The Bloody Two Duo is compatible with silicone and latex, making it a very versatile tool for prosthetic characterisation. On silicone, make sure the piece is painted with a suitable adhesion base before applying the palette on top.
How is this type of makeup removed?
The alcohol-activated makeup from the Bloody Two Duo is removed with Telesis Super Solv or Telesis Makeup Remover. Apply the product with a sponge or cotton pad and remove gently. Avoid using water alone, as it does not effectively dissolve this type of ink.
What is the difference between Blood Tone and Aged Blood?
Blood Tone reproduces the shade of fresh, vivid and bright blood. Aged Blood mimics darkened, aged or coagulated blood. Combining both colours in layers allows you to create very realistic effects, with areas of recent blood and already dried areas within the same wound or characterisation.
What is the advantage of the "On Set" version over other formats?
The On Set version is designed for direct work on a film set or location. Its compact format allows it to be carried in the pocket or on the makeup artist's tool belt, making it easy to do continuity touch-ups between takes without having to return to the makeup station.
Can I use these palettes for Halloween effects or one-off events without prior experience?
Yes, although they are aimed at professionals, the Bloody Two Duo is intuitive to use. The key point is to use the correct activator (99% isopropyl alcohol) and work in thin layers. With a little practice, anyone with an interest in SFX makeup can achieve convincing results.
Which other Skin Illustrator palettes can it be combined with?
The Bloody Two Duo pairs perfectly with other palettes from the Skin Illustrator range available at Feroca: the FX Palette for general special effects, the Flesh Tone Palette and the Complexion Palette for skin tones, and the Dark Fleshtone Palette for darker tones.
