What it's used for

This palette is designed for SFX makeup professionals, theatrical and film character artists who need to match and blend latex, silicone or vinyl bald caps to an actor's skin tone quickly and accurately on set. The 10 colours cover a wide range of skin tones and allow custom blends for any complexion.

  • Application and blending of latex and silicone bald caps onto skin
  • Matching the bald cap tone to the actor's neck and forehead
  • Character makeup for total or partial hair loss
  • Blending realistic skin tones for special effects in film, television and theatre
  • Real-time colour correction and adjustment during shooting
  • Application of freckles and skin texture details on prosthetics
  • Compatibility with the full Skin Illustrator range to expand the colour palette

How to use it

  1. Prepare the surface: skin must be clean and grease-free; silicone or latex bald caps must be properly adhered and trimmed.
  2. Activate the colour: dampen the brush or sponge with Skin Illustrator Activator or 99% isopropyl alcohol. Never use 70% alcohol, acetone, MEK or water.
  3. Load the colour by touching the activated pan with the damp brush. Pick up just the right amount to avoid oversaturating the surface.
  4. Apply in thin layers, allowing brief drying time between coats to build coverage without a heavy, caked effect.
  5. Blend colours directly on the palette or on the surface to achieve the exact shade. Combine with other colours from the Skin Illustrator range to expand possibilities.
  6. Work the edges of the bald cap with a very thin, diluted coat and gentle strokes to blend it into the surrounding skin.
  7. Once the makeup is complete, set using your usual workflow method (compatible translucent powder or alcohol-based sealer).
  8. To remove the makeup, use Telesis Super Solv Plus or Telesis Makeup Remover safely without damaging the skin or prosthetic.

Tips and advice

Temperature and colour consistency

Alcohol palettes are sensitive to temperature. On hot sets, the pans may soften and pick up too much product on the brush. Work with less activator and thinner layers to maintain control. If the palette has been exposed to cold, allow it to reach room temperature before use to prevent the colour from cracking on application.

Working order for perfect blends

Always start with the lightest tone and build up with adjusters (Olive Adjuster, Warm Ochre) in successive layers until you reach the target shade. Working light to dark gives you far more room for correction. Use Flush DT and Flush Response very sparingly — a small amount completely transforms the result — and add Freckles last, using a dry brush or torn sponge, to give a natural finish.

Palette maintenance and cleaning

After each use, clean the edges of the pans with a cotton swab dampened in 99% isopropyl alcohol to prevent cross-contamination between colours. Store the palette closed in a cool place away from direct light. If any pan has picked up residue from other shades, scrape the top surface with a clean spatula before using it again.

Frequently asked questions

What activator should I use with an alcohol makeup palette?

The correct activator is 99% isopropyl alcohol or the brand's specific activator. For the Skin Illustrator On Set BALD Caps palette, it is recommended to use Skin Illustrator Activator or Skin Illustrator Slow Activator. 70% alcohol contains too much water and may cause incorrect activation or damage the pans. Do not use acetone, MEK or any other solvent either.

Does this type of makeup work on silicone and latex as well as on skin?

Yes. The Skin Illustrator On Set BALD Caps palette is formulated to adhere to skin, platinum silicone and latex, which are the standard materials used in prosthetics and special effects bald caps. The key is to activate the colour properly and apply thin layers; on silicone, make sure the surface is degreased before you begin.

Can it be mixed with other colours from the same range?

Yes, all Skin Illustrator colours are compatible with each other. You can mix the colours from the On Set BALD Caps palette with those from the Flesh Tone Palette, the Complexion Palette or the Dark Fleshtone Palette to expand the range of available tones.

How many layers are needed to achieve full coverage?

It depends on the contrast between the bald cap tone and the skin. In general, 2 to 4 thin layers are sufficient. It is better to build up thin coats than to load the colour all at once, as thick layers can crack or show the prosthetic texture in an unnatural way.

How is this type of makeup removed without damaging the skin?

For safe removal, it is recommended to use Telesis Super Solv Plus or Telesis Makeup Remover, which dissolve alcohol-based makeup without irritating the skin or damaging the prosthetic. Avoid dry rubbing; apply the remover, let it work for a few seconds and gently remove with a sponge or gauze.

Is this makeup sweat- and water-resistant during shooting?

Alcohol-based makeup offers superior water and sweat resistance compared to conventional makeups once dry. However, in situations of heavy perspiration or water scenes, it is recommended to apply a specific sealer or fixative for alcohol-based makeups as a final protective layer.

What is the difference between the "On Set" version and other versions of Skin Illustrator?

The "On Set" version is a compact format curated by Adrian Rigby with the colours he regularly uses on set. It is designed to be kept on hand during shooting without having to carry large palettes. The colours are the same as in the rest of the range; it is simply a curated selection in a more manageable size for daily work on set.

Can this palette be used for fantasy character makeups or only for realistic skin tones?

Although the BALD Caps palette is optimised for realistic skin tones in bald cap application, there is nothing to stop you using it for fantasy makeups by mixing its colours with those from the FX Palette, which extends the range with more extreme and saturated tones for higher-impact special effects.
