What it's used for

The Prism On Set palette is designed for projects where color needs immediate visual impact and durability across different substrates. Its range of bold tones covers everything from creature characterisation to high-saturation editorial looks.

  • Fantasy creature, alien and monster characterisation in film and television
  • Special effects makeup on film sets and theatrical productions
  • Painting and detailing on silicone and latex prosthetics
  • Editorial fashion looks with extreme, saturated colors
  • Professional bodypainting
  • Artistic makeup for festivals, cosplay and live characterisation
  • On-set color touch-ups and corrections on any compatible surface

How to use it

  1. Prepare the surface to be made up: skin should be clean and free of creams or oils; silicone or latex prosthetics should be clean and dry.
  2. Activate the color with a few drops of Skin Illustrator Activator or 99% isopropyl alcohol directly onto the color pan or onto the brush.
  3. Load the brush with the required amount of pigment and apply to the surface with precise strokes.
  4. Allow a few seconds to dry between layers to set the color and build the desired intensity.
  5. Mix colors directly on the palette or on the skin to achieve intermediate tones and gradients.
  6. To reactivate or blend, apply a small additional amount of activator with a clean brush or sponge.
  7. To remove the product, use a specific remover for alcohol-activated makeup.
Correct activation: Use exclusively 99% isopropyl alcohol or specific activators for alcohol-activated makeup. Do not use 70% alcohol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) or water. These solvents may cause incorrect activation, alter the color or damage the product.

Usage tips

Suitable brushes and tools

Fine synthetic-hair brushes are the most recommended for working with alcohol-activated makeup: they do not absorb excess solvent and allow precise stroke control. For broad base coats and gradients, a latex sponge or flat blending brush delivers better results. Always keep several clean brushes on hand during set work to switch colors quickly without contaminating the palette.

Thin layers for greater durability

The key with alcohol-activated makeup is to build color in thin, successive layers. Applying too much product at once can cause cracking or loss of adhesion, especially on silicone prosthetics. Wait until each layer is dry to the touch before adding the next. This method also allows greater control over the final color intensity.

Palette storage

Keep the palette closed when not in use to prevent residual evaporation of any solvent remaining in the pans. If colors dry out or harden over time, simply reactivate them with a few drops of 99% alcohol. Store the palette in a cool place away from heat sources or direct sunlight to preserve pigment intensity in the long term.

Frequently asked questions

Can this type of palette be used directly on sensitive skin?

Alcohol-activated makeup, including the Prism On Set palette, is formulated for professional use on healthy skin. On very sensitive or irritation-prone skin, it is advisable to carry out a tolerance test on a small area before full application. If there are wounds, cuts or active skin conditions, avoid applying the product directly over those areas.

What is the difference between using a specific activator and 99% isopropyl alcohol?

The specific activator for alcohol-activated makeup is formulated to offer a slightly longer working time and more controlled activation than pure alcohol. 99% isopropyl alcohol is the more direct and accessible alternative, but it evaporates faster, which may require more frequent reloading during application. For detailed on-set work, the specific activator usually gives better results; for quick touch-ups, 99% isopropyl alcohol works perfectly well.

Does this type of makeup work well on silicone prosthetics?

Yes. Alcohol-activated makeup is one of the most widely used options in the industry for painting silicone prosthetics, as it adheres well to the surface without the need for additional primers in most cases. The Prism On Set palette is specifically indicated for this use. Apply in thin layers and allow each one to dry thoroughly before adding the next to achieve maximum adhesion and durability.

How is this makeup removed from skin?

Alcohol-activated makeup is effectively removed with a specific remover for this type of product. It is not recommended to attempt removal with water or conventional cleansers alone, as the result will not be complete. A suitable remover dissolves the product quickly and safely, minimising friction on the skin.

Can the colors be mixed together?

Yes, the colors in the Prism On Set palette are fully miscible with one another. You can mix them directly on the palette, on a mixing tile or on the working surface itself to achieve custom tones. It is also possible to mix them with colors from other palettes in the same Skin Illustrator range to expand the available color palette.

What type of projects is this palette particularly suited to?

The Prism On Set palette excels in projects that require intense, saturated colors outside the natural skin tone range: fantasy creature characterisation, aliens, fantasy characters, artistic bodypainting and high-impact editorial makeup. Its compact On Set format makes it especially practical for work on set or backstage, where space and time are limited.

Which other palettes complement this one well in a professional kit?

To complete a professional SFX makeup kit, the Prism On Set palette pairs perfectly with flesh tone and correction palettes such as the Skin Illustrator Flesh Tone Palette or the Skin Illustrator Complexion Palette for skin tone matching, and with the Skin Illustrator FX Palette for special effects such as wounds, bruises and ageing.

Why should 70% alcohol not be used to activate this makeup?

70% alcohol contains too high a water content to correctly activate alcohol-activated makeup. Water interferes with pigment dissolution, can cause an uneven texture, alter color intensity and compromise product adhesion to the surface. Always use 99% isopropyl alcohol or the recommended specific activator to ensure optimal results.
