What it is used for

This palette is designed for special effects makeup artists, theatrical and film character makeup, as well as students who want to work with a versatile, high-quality range of light tones. The five colours allow you to create realistic skin bases, shades and transitions on any compatible surface.

  • Character makeup for film, television and theatre
  • Painting on silicone and latex prosthetics to blend them with real skin
  • Light-tone body and facial makeup
  • Creating aged skin, wound or birthmark effects
  • SFX makeup studies and practice in training environments
  • Touching up and customising masks or workshop-painted silicone pieces

How to use it

  1. Make sure the surface (skin, silicone or latex) is clean, dry and free of grease.
  2. Pick up a small amount of colour from the palette with a brush or sponge.
  3. Activate the colour with a few drops of Skin Illustrator activator (Activator or Slow Activator) or with isopropyl alcohol at 99%. Never use 70° alcohol, MEK, acetone or water.
  4. Apply the colour in thin layers and allow to dry between each layer to achieve greater opacity and control.
  5. Mix the five colours from the palette on the lid itself or on a clean surface to achieve the exact tones you need.
  6. Once dry, the finish is resistant to touch and light perspiration. To retouch it, reactivate the area with the activator.
  7. To remove the makeup, use Telesis Super Solv or a solvent specifically designed for alcohol inks.

Usage tips

Thin layers, better results

Always apply in very thin layers and allow the alcohol to evaporate between coats. Thick layers take longer to dry and can crack or lose adhesion, especially on highly flexible silicone pieces.

Controlling drying speed

If you need more working time to blend or mix tones directly on the skin or prosthetic, use the Skin Illustrator Slow Activator instead of the standard Activator. The Slow Activator slows down alcohol evaporation and gives you a wider working window, ideal for complex colour transitions.

Palette storage

Always cap the palette after each use to prevent the colours from drying out. If a colour has slightly hardened due to air exposure, reactivate it with a drop of isopropyl alcohol at 99% directly onto the pan before applying.

Frequently asked questions

Can this palette be used directly on skin without prior preparation?

Yes, but the skin must be clean, dry and free of grease or creams. Grease reduces the adhesion of alcohol inks. If the skin is very oily, first wipe the area with a cotton pad soaked in isopropyl alcohol at 99% to degrease it.

What alcohol should I use to activate the colours?

Always use isopropyl alcohol at 99% (IPA 99%) or the specific Skin Illustrator activator. 70° alcohol contains too much water and does not properly activate the ink, leaving an uneven finish. Never use acetone, MEK or water.

Does this palette work on workshop-painted silicone?

Yes. Skin Illustrator alcohol inks are especially popular in special effects workshops precisely because of their adhesion to silicone and latex. Make sure the surface is clean and dry before applying.

How is alcohol makeup removed?

The recommended method is Telesis Super Solv, a specific solvent that removes alcohol inks without harming the skin or silicone pieces. Avoid dry rubbing; apply the solvent, let it work for a few seconds and remove gently.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin or prolonged use?

Skin Illustrator alcohol inks are formulated for professional use in character makeup. For very sensitive skin, always perform a patch test on a small area before full application. Consult the product safety data sheet if you have questions about specific ingredients.

Can the colours in this palette be mixed with other Skin Illustrator palettes?

Yes. All colours in the Skin Illustrator range are compatible with each other. You can combine the tones from the Mini Light Tone 5 with those from the Flesh Tone Palette, the Complexion Palette or the Dark Fleshtone Palette to expand your colour range.

How long does the makeup last once applied?

Durability is high under normal shooting or performance conditions. Heavy perspiration, water or continuous rubbing can degrade the finish. To maximise durability, apply in thin layers and allow each one to dry completely before the next.

Does the mini palette contain the same colours as the large format?

Mini palettes contain the same colours and the same ink quality as the large formats, in a smaller amount per pan. They are ideal for students, colour tests or for completing a professional kit without duplicating colours already held in another format.
