What it's used for

These liquids are designed to build, adjust and customise skin tones on silicone prosthetics, latex pieces and real skin. Their formulation allows precise blending and professional chromatic integration in any character makeup or special effects project.

  • Colouring silicone prosthetics for film, television and theatre
  • Alcohol-based body and facial makeup on real skin
  • Painting on latex pieces and encapsulated prosthetics
  • Precision airbrushing on silicone prosthetics and sculptures
  • Building skin tones from Caucasian to Latino and Asian
  • Fine-tuning colour temperature (warm/cool) through tone blending
  • Darkening and bronzing base tones using colours such as Cedar Brown
  • Integrating prosthetics with the actor's skin tone

How to use it

  1. Identify your starting base tone: for Caucasian skin, begin with Natural 1 or Natural 2; for yellowish tones, use Lao 1 or Lao 2.
  2. Lighten the tone with Rice Paper if you need to reduce saturation or brighten the mix.
  3. Adjust colour temperature: add Coral Adjuster or Rose Adjuster II for warmer tones; use Olive Adjuster I or Vein Tone to cool or shift the tone towards beige.
  4. For bronzed tones or to darken any base, incorporate Cedar Brown in small amounts until the desired result is achieved.
  5. If using an airbrush, no thinning is required; the liquid already has the right viscosity. Adjust equipment pressure according to your technique.
  6. Apply in thin layers and allow to dry between coats. Drying is fast due to the alcohol base.
  7. To set and protect the finish, apply a fixing spray such as HD Matting Spray Clear or HD Matting Spray Shinto for a professional matte finish.
  8. To add translucent finishes or glaze specific areas, combine with Skin Illustrator Glazing Gels.

Usage tips

Tone and blending guide

The FleshTone Liquids palette is organised around five base skin tones plus a series of adjusters. Always work from the base tone towards the adjusters, never the other way around: it is much easier to warm or cool a neutral tone than to correct one that is already saturated with adjuster. Rice Paper acts as a "functional white" without pulling the tone towards pure white, making it ideal for lightening without losing naturalism.

Airbrushing and viscosity

Skin Illustrator liquids are formulated with the right viscosity for a dual-action airbrush with a 0.3 to 0.5 mm needle. If you use finer needles or have the compressor at low pressure, you can add a few drops of high-purity isopropyl alcohol (99%) to slightly reduce viscosity without altering the colour. Clean the airbrush with isopropyl alcohol between colours to avoid contamination.

Integration on silicone

On intrinsically painted silicone prosthetics, these liquids work as an extrinsic adjustment layer. Always apply on a clean surface free of Release agent residue. If the silicone has excess oil on the surface, clean it first with isopropyl alcohol and allow it to evaporate completely before painting. For projects where you also need to work from a solid palette, the Skin Illustrator Flesh Tone Palette is the ideal complement for spot touch-ups and fine brush work.

Frequently asked questions

Can this makeup be used directly on skin?

Yes. The FleshTone Palette Liquids are suitable for direct application on skin. Being alcohol-based, they set quickly and have good durability. For prolonged use on sensitive skin, always perform a patch test on a small area first.

Do they work on intrinsically painted silicone?

Yes. These liquids are designed precisely for extrinsic adjustment on silicone prosthetics. They allow you to fine-tune the final tone without having to redo the piece. Make sure the surface is clean and free of oil or Release agent residue before applying.

Are they compatible with latex?

Yes. The FleshTone Palette Liquids adhere correctly to vulcanised latex. They are a common choice in theatrical character makeup on latex pieces due to their fast drying speed and blending capability.

What thinner should I use if I need to reduce viscosity?

High-purity isopropyl alcohol (minimum 99%). Add a few drops until you achieve the desired fluidity. Avoid low-purity alcohols that may contain water and affect colour adhesion.

How do I clean the airbrush after using these colours?

With 99% isopropyl alcohol. Purge the airbrush with alcohol between colours and do a thorough clean at the end of the session by removing the needle and head. Alcohol-based colours dry quickly inside the airbrush if left uncleaned, which can clog the needle.

How long do these colours last once opened?

Being alcohol-based, they have good stability once opened if kept tightly closed and away from heat sources. Store them upright, in a cool place away from direct sunlight to maximise shelf life.

Can all colours in the FleshTone palette be mixed together?

Yes. All tones in the FleshTone Liquids range have been formulated to be compatible with each other. The adjuster colours (Coral Adjuster, Rose Adjuster II, Olive Adjuster I, Vein Tone) are specifically designed to blend with the base tones without breaking chromatic coherence.

What is the difference between the liquids and the solid palettes in the same range?

The liquids offer greater fluidity and are ideal for airbrushing and broad coverage. The solid palettes, such as the Skin Illustrator Flesh Tone Palette, are activated with alcohol and are more practical for targeted brush work and detail touch-ups. Both formats are fully compatible with each other.
