What it is used for
This palette is designed for hair characterisation and scalp effects. It is especially useful on film sets, theatre productions and transformation work where speed and precision are needed on small areas. Its colours can be used individually or mixed together and with other Skin Illustrator palettes to create custom shades.
- Covering visible scalp areas at hairlines and partial bald spots
- Darkening grey or light roots
- Quick touch-ups during filming without needing to redo the full makeup
- Visually filling in hair density in areas with sparse coverage
- Application on silicone and latex prosthetics with hair implantation areas
- Combining with other Skin Illustrator palettes to match the character's skin tone
How to use it
- Prepare the area, making sure the hair and scalp are clean and free of grease.
- Dampen a fine brush or mascara wand with 99% isopropyl alcohol. Do not use 70% alcohol, water, acetone or other solvents.
- Touch the colour cell with the damp brush to pick up the activated pigment.
- Apply to the scalp with short strokes, following the natural direction of the hair.
- Allow to dry for a few seconds. The colour sets quickly as the alcohol evaporates.
- Layer thin coats to build coverage or adjust the shade as needed.
- Mix colours directly on the palette or on the skin to achieve the exact shade.
- To remove the makeup, use a suitable alcohol-based makeup remover.
Usage tips
Control the amount of alcohol on the brush
Too much alcohol over-dilutes the pigment and reduces coverage. Load the brush with just the right amount: damp but not dripping. If the colour is too transparent on the first coat, let it dry and repeat rather than adding more activator all at once.
Always work with thin, progressive layers
The key to a good result is building up thin layers. Apply, let it set for a few seconds, and repeat. This gives a more natural finish than trying to cover in a single pass, especially in transition areas between hair and skin. On coloured silicone prosthetics, you can first prepare the base with a flesh tone palette before applying the scalp colours.
Palette maintenance and cleaning
Close the palette tightly after each use to prevent colours from drying out or cross-contaminating. Clean the brush between colours with a little alcohol to keep the shades pure. Store the palette at room temperature, away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
Frequently asked questions
What type of alcohol should be used to activate these colours?
You must use 99% isopropyl alcohol. 70% alcohol contains too much water and does not properly activate the pigment: it can damage the palette and produce uneven results. Acetone, MEK or water must not be used either.
Can this palette be used directly on skin without prosthetics?
Yes. The Hair Illustrator On Set Scalp Palette is formulated for direct application on skin, natural hair, silicone and latex. It is commonly used directly on the actor's real scalp to cover hairlines, areas of low density or grey roots.
Can it be applied on silicone or latex prosthetics?
Yes, it is fully compatible with silicone and latex. In fact, it is especially useful for retouching the scalp area on prosthetics with implanted hair, integrating the colour of the artificial skin with the actor's natural scalp.
Can it be mixed with other colours from the Skin Illustrator range?
Yes. The colours in the Hair Illustrator On Set Scalp Palette are compatible with the entire Skin Illustrator range. You can mix them together or combine them with palettes such as the Flesh Tone Palette, the Complexion Palette or the Dark Fleshtone Palette to fine-tune the shade precisely.
How long does the colour last once applied?
Alcohol-activated makeup offers a finish resistant to moderate sweat and touch once dry. Under intensive filming conditions or heavy perspiration, touch-ups may be required. The compact palette is designed precisely to make these touch-ups quick and without disrupting work.
How is this makeup removed?
Removal is done with a makeup remover formulated for alcohol-activated products. Avoid dry rubbing, as this can irritate the skin. Apply the remover with a gauze pad or cotton, leave it to work for a few seconds, and remove gently.
Is it suitable for people with sensitive skin?
The formula is intended for professional use in character makeup. If the client has particularly sensitive skin or a history of reactions to alcohol-activated makeup, a patch test on a small area is recommended before full application.
Can it be used to implant hair in prosthetics?
This palette is for colouring, not for implanting hair. For the hair implantation (rooting) process in silicone or latex prosthetics, you need specific rooting needles. The palette is used at a later stage, to blend the colour of the prosthetic scalp with the actor's natural scalp.
