EpoFood is a two-component, colourless and transparent epoxy coating, specifically formulated for surfaces in contact with food. It complies with standard UNE-EN 1186-3 and the migration requirements of R.D. 118/2003 and R.D. 293/2003, making it the ideal solution for sanitary and Food Safe applications where safety and cleanliness are a priority.

What it is used for

EpoFood is designed to coat surfaces that will be in direct contact with food or drinking water. Its colourless formulation does not alter the appearance of the piece, and its high hardness ensures a smooth, hygienic and easy-to-clean surface. It is especially useful in industrial environments, catering and sanitary applications where regulatory compliance is required.

  • Interior coating of drinking water tanks and cisterns
  • Lining of pipes in contact with food-grade liquids
  • Protection of trays, plates and food presentation surfaces
  • Sealing of worktops and work surfaces in industrial kitchens
  • Coating of moulds and containers for sanitary use
  • Waterproofing of food storage containers and trays

How to use it

  1. Prepare the surface: it must be clean, dry and free of dust, grease or previous residues. If the surface is porous, sand lightly to improve adhesion.
  2. Homogenise component A and component B separately by shaking each container well before opening.
  3. Accurately weigh the components at a ratio of 100 parts A to 50 parts B (by weight).
  4. Mix both components thoroughly for at least 2–3 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of the mixing container.
  5. Apply the mixture to the surface using a brush, roller or spray gun, in thin, even coats. If applying manually, work with small quantities to prevent gelling before you finish.
  6. Allow to cure at room temperature for 24 hours. Curing can be accelerated by applying moderate heat.
  7. Once cured, clean tools with Epoxi Cleaner before the resin solidifies.
Important notice: EpoFood is a two-component epoxy resin. Before curing, the components may be irritating to skin and eyes. Always work with nitrile gloves and in a well-ventilated space. Once fully cured (minimum 24h), the material is inert and meets the food contact requirements established by current regulations. Do not use the surface for food contact until curing is complete.

Usage tips

Mixing and application on large surfaces

For large surface applications it is preferable to use mixing and spray gun equipment to ensure an even coat. If working manually, divide the mixture into small batches: the exothermic reaction accelerates gelation when there is a large volume of mixture in the container. Spread quickly and in thin layers.

Temperature and curing conditions

The optimum working and curing temperature is between 18°C and 25°C. Below 15°C, curing slows down considerably and the surface may remain soft or appear milky. If you need to speed up the process, an oven or heat lamp at 40–50°C significantly reduces curing time without compromising the coating properties.

Surface preparation and adhesion

The adhesion of EpoFood depends largely on prior preparation. On metal surfaces, remove any trace of rust and degrease thoroughly. On polyester or already-cured epoxy surfaces, sand with fine-grit sandpaper and remove dust before applying. If the surface will be continuously exposed to water, apply two coats, allowing the first to partially cure (tack-free) before applying the second.

Frequently asked questions

Is this coating safe for storing drinking water?

Yes, once fully cured (minimum 24 hours). EpoFood complies with standard UNE-EN 1186-3 and the overall migration limit values of R.D. 118/2003, making it suitable for surfaces in contact with water and aqueous foods. It is important to respect the full curing time before bringing the surface into contact with food.

How many coats need to be applied for a good result?

In most cases one coat is sufficient if applied evenly. For environments with continuous water exposure or for very porous surfaces, it is recommended to apply two coats: the first acts as a sealer and the second as the final coat. Allow the first coat to reach tack-free before applying the second.

Can it be pigmented to change the colour of the coating?

EpoFood in its standard formulation is completely transparent and colourless. If you need a specific colour, you can add epoxy-compatible pigments to the mixture before applying, although bear in mind that any additive may affect the migration properties and food-safe certification. Contact Feroca if you have any doubts about compatibility.

Is it heat-resistant or can it be used on surfaces that get hot?

EpoFood is not formulated to withstand high temperatures. It is suitable for surfaces in contact with food at room or cold temperature, such as water tanks, presentation trays or worktops. It is not recommended for surfaces that will be exposed to continuous or direct heat.

What should I do if the mixture gels before I finish applying it?

Once the mixture has gelled it cannot be recovered. To avoid this, work with small quantities, especially in high-temperature conditions. Keep the mixing container in a cool place and apply quickly. Premature gelation is usually caused by excessively large batches or temperatures above 25°C.

Is it compatible with all types of surfaces?

EpoFood adheres well to properly prepared metal, fibreglass, cured polyester, concrete and wood. On plastic surfaces, adhesion may vary depending on the type of plastic. It is not recommended to apply over surfaces containing waxes or release agents without removing them first.

How do I clean tools and equipment after application?

Clean brushes, rollers and containers immediately after use, before the resin cures, with Epoxi Cleaner. Once cured, the resin is very difficult to remove mechanically and practically impossible to dissolve.

Can I apply it over a surface that already has another epoxy coating?

Yes, as long as the previous coating is fully cured and in good condition. Sand the surface lightly with fine-grit sandpaper to create mechanical adhesion, remove the dust and apply EpoFood in the usual way. Do not apply over deteriorated, flaking or moisture-trapped coatings.
