What it is used for

Epofer EX401+E432 is designed for medium and high thickness castings in mould. By accepting functional fillers, it allows you to adjust its mechanical properties, weight or finish to suit the application. It is commonly found in composites workshops, special effects, industrial modelling and restoration.

  • Casting in silicone, polyurethane or epoxy moulds
  • Production of decorative and functional parts with high impact resistance
  • Industrial prototypes and scale models
  • Parts filled with hollow glass microspheres to reduce weight, or with marble powder and aluminium powder to increase resistance and density
  • Bases for painted, machined or polished finishes
  • Structural repairs and elements with demanding mechanical requirements

How to use it

  1. Prepare the mould and apply a paste release agent if the mould is not made of silicone or another naturally non-stick material. Allow to dry according to the release agent instructions.
  2. Weigh the components in the correct ratio: 100 parts of EX401 (resin, component A) to 32 parts of E432 (hardener, component B) by weight. Use a precision scale to ensure the exact ratio.
  3. Mix both components slowly for at least 2–3 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of the container thoroughly to avoid unreacted areas.
  4. If you are adding fillers (marble powder, aluminium powder, hollow glass microspheres), incorporate them into the mix at this point and blend thoroughly.
  5. Pour the mixture into the mould slowly and continuously to minimise air bubble entrapment. Start from the lowest point of the mould.
  6. Allow to cure at room temperature for 48 hours before demoulding. Full cure is improved at workshop temperatures between 20 and 25 °C.
  7. Clean tools and containers with acetone before the resin gels.
Warning: Epoxy resins are irritants on contact with skin and eyes. Always work with nitrile gloves, safety goggles and in a well-ventilated space. Large volume mixes can generate significant exothermic heat: do not cast large masses in a single pour if the mould does not allow it. In case of skin contact, wash thoroughly with soap and water.

Usage tips

Temperature and cure speed

Epofer EX401+E432 cures at room temperature, but if the workshop is below 18 °C the cure slows noticeably and the mix may remain soft for longer than expected. If you need to shorten the cure time, you can use the Epofer Accelerator, always respecting the recommended doses. Do not apply direct heat to the mould during the first hours.

Bubble control

For transparent castings or visible-finish parts, reduce mixing speed to a minimum to avoid incorporating air. If you have a vacuum chamber, degassing the mix before pouring eliminates virtually all bubbles. Another option is to pour in a thin stream from a certain height, which helps break the surface tension and allows trapped air to escape.

Working with fillers and additives

Epofer EX401+E432 accepts a variety of functional fillers well. Add hollow glass microspheres for lighter parts without losing consistency, or marble powder and aluminium powder when you need more weight and mechanical resistance. To thicken the mix and prevent it from flowing (vertical applications or gap filling), add fumed silica in small proportions until the desired viscosity is achieved. Always incorporate fillers after mixing the two components.

Frequently asked questions

What is the correct mix ratio and how do I measure it?

Epofer EX401+E432 is mixed at a ratio of 100 parts resin (A) to 32 parts hardener (B) by weight. The most reliable way to measure this is with a precision scale. Do not use volumetric measurements, as the two components have different densities and the ratio could be off, affecting the cure.

Can I demould before 48 hours?

Epofer EX401+E432 may be rigid enough to demould earlier, especially if the workshop temperature is high, but full cure is reached at 48 hours. Demoulding too early can cause warping in thin-walled parts or those with internal stresses. To speed up the process in a controlled way, you can use Epofer Accelerator.

Can this resin be used for countertops or surfaces with an aesthetic finish?

Epofer EX401+E432 is formulated for structural and functional castings. For high-quality visible-finish surfaces (countertops, tables, resin jewellery), the ideal approach is to combine it with a specific topcoat or fillers that provide the desired effect. However, with good bubble control and appropriate fillers, notable aesthetic results can be achieved.

What type of mould is it compatible with?

Epofer EX401+E432 is compatible with silicone moulds (no release agent required), polyurethane moulds and rigid epoxy or polyester moulds (which do require a release agent). Avoid moulds made of unsealed porous materials, as the resin may adhere or penetrate the substrate.

What happens if I do not mix the two components properly?

An incomplete mix leaves unreacted areas that remain tacky or soft even after the full cure time. If you notice soft spots once the part has cured, it is most likely due to poor mixing. It is important to mix for at least 2–3 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom, and not to begin pouring until the mix is completely homogeneous.

How do I clean tools after working?

Clean spatulas, containers and any tools with acetone before the resin cures. Once cured, mechanical cleaning is the only option. Do not pour uncured resin residue down the drain: allow it to cure in the container and dispose of it as solid waste.

Can I add pigments to this resin?

Yes. Epofer EX401+E432 accepts paste or powder pigments compatible with epoxy. Add the pigment to component A before incorporating the hardener, or directly into the already homogenised mix. Keep the pigment proportion within the limits recommended by the pigment manufacturer to avoid affecting the cure.

Is it water resistant once cured?

Yes, cured epoxy has good resistance to moisture and water. However, for applications in permanent contact with water or chemicals, consult the technical data sheets and consider whether you need a specific formulation such as Epofer TANK (8151), designed for tanks and immersion environments.
