Professional rust, limescale, oil and tar remover in light foam form. Water-based, non-flammable. Apply, leave 15–20 min and rinse.

Ferrokleen is a professional remover of rust, limescale, oils and tar formulated as a light water-based foam. Its non-flammable formula makes it safe to use in the workshop on painted or untreated metal surfaces, both on exterior parts and internal circuits and tanks. Apply, leave to dwell and rinse: no fuss, no harsh chemicals.

What it is used for

Ferrokleen is designed for cleaning and decontaminating metal surfaces in workshop, restoration and industrial maintenance environments. Its light foam ensures good adhesion on vertical surfaces and inside pipes and containers.

  • Removal of surface rust from metal parts before applying resins or coatings such as Epofer TANK or Epofer Laminate 401
  • Cleaning of tanks, radiators and cooling circuits with limescale deposits
  • Degreasing and tar removal from bodywork and chassis
  • Preparation of metal surfaces prior to laminating with epoxy resin
  • Cleaning of nuts, bolts and threaded components with corrosion
  • Treatment of cast or forged parts with rust before finishing processes
  • Preventive maintenance of workshop tools and tooling

How to use it

  1. Make sure the surface is dry or has minimal moisture before applying.
  2. Apply Ferrokleen directly onto the area to be treated. On exterior surfaces, use a brush to distribute the foam product evenly.
  3. For small parts (nuts, chains, bolts), place them in a container with Ferrokleen and stir periodically to ensure good contact.
  4. For internal circuits or tanks, pour the product inside and shake or circulate the liquid so it reaches all areas.
  5. Allow to dwell for 15 to 20 minutes without letting the product dry out.
  6. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all product residues and loosened contaminants.
  7. If contamination is very heavy, repeat the process a second time.
  8. Once the part is clean and dry, apply the intended coating or treatment (for example, Epofer EX401+E432 for filling or Epofer TANK for tank protection).

Usage tips

Temperature and contact time

Product performance improves slightly at ambient temperatures above 15 °C. In cold conditions, extend the dwell time to 20–25 minutes and avoid letting the foam dry before rinsing; if necessary, moisten the surface with a little more product during the process.

Surface preparation for epoxy coatings

If your goal is to apply an epoxy resin after cleaning, it is essential that the part is completely dry and free of moisture before laminating or casting. After rinsing with water, dry with compressed air or allow sufficient drying time. For a final cleaning of grease or residues before the resin, you can add a final step with acetone or isopropyl alcohol.

Parts with complex geometries or internal areas

For parts with cavities, deep threads or hard-to-reach geometries, the immersion method in a container is the most effective. Make sure the product reaches all areas and move the part or shake the container every 5 minutes to renew product contact with the oxidised surface.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to use this type of product indoors?

Ferrokleen is water-based and non-flammable, making it safer than rust removers containing organic solvents. Even so, always work with adequate ventilation and avoid prolonged contact with skin and mucous membranes. Use nitrile gloves and, if working in enclosed spaces, ensure the area is properly ventilated.

Can I use it on painted metal without damaging the paint?

Ferrokleen is formulated to be compatible with painted metal surfaces, but on very old, deteriorated or porous-based paints, the product may soften or lift the paint layer. Always carry out a test on an inconspicuous area before applying to the entire part.

How long do I need to leave it on to remove deep rust?

15 minutes is sufficient for surface rust. If the rust is deep or there are very dense limescale deposits, extend the time to 20–25 minutes and repeat the process a second time after the first rinse. Ferrokleen does not remove structural rust or deep pitting of the metal, which requires mechanical intervention.

Is it necessary to neutralise the surface after treatment?

A thorough rinse with clean water is sufficient to remove product residues. No additional neutraliser is required. If the part is to receive an epoxy coating, also carry out a step with acetone or isopropyl alcohol to ensure a completely moisture- and grease-free surface.

Can it be used on aluminium, copper or other non-ferrous metals?

Ferrokleen is optimised for steel and iron surfaces. On non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, copper or brass, the behaviour may differ and there is a risk of attack on the base metal. Always carry out a test on a small area and limit contact time before applying to the entire part.

What is the difference between a water-based rust remover and a solvent-based one?

Water-based rust removers like Ferrokleen are safer in enclosed environments, non-flammable and easier to handle. Solvent-based ones may be more aggressive against certain types of rust, but require greater care in handling, ventilation and compatibility with adjacent materials. For most workshop uses and surface preparation, Ferrokleen offers an optimal balance between effectiveness and safety.

Can I apply it with a spray gun or sprayer?

Yes. In addition to a brush, you can apply Ferrokleen with a hand sprayer or low-pressure spray gun, which makes it easier to achieve even coverage on large or complex-geometry surfaces. Make sure the sprayer is compatible with water-based products and rinse it thoroughly with water after use.

How should I store the product?

Store Ferrokleen in its original tightly closed container, in a cool and dry place, away from heat sources and freezing temperatures. Do not store it in unprotected metal containers, as the product may react with the metal of the container over time.
