Monster Clay SOFT: sulphur-free professional modelling clay, soft hardness, reusable and compatible with platinum silicone. 2.05 kg container.

Monster Clay SOFT is a professional oil-water based modelling clay, sulphur-free and made with non-toxic food safe components. Its soft formulation makes it the ideal choice for large-format sculptures, Life Casting and detail corrections, with the advantage of being meltable, remoulded and reused indefinitely. It is 100% compatible with platinum silicones, making it essential in special effects workshops, prosthetic makeup and audiovisual production.

What it is used for

Monster Clay SOFT is designed for sculptors, special effects professionals and makeup artists who need a fast, reusable modelling material that is fully compatible with platinum silicone moulding systems. Its low hardness makes it especially suitable for hand modelling, corrections on moulds and large-volume pieces where material fatigue is a critical factor. If you need a higher level of fine detail or work with tools on firmer surfaces, you can combine it with Chavant Medium or Chavant Hard.

  • Character, creature and bust sculpture for film and television
  • Correction and refinement of details in Life Casting moulds
  • Modelling of large-scale maquettes and prototypes
  • Creation of masters for moulding with platinum silicones
  • Prosthetics and FX pieces for artistic makeup
  • Sculpting heads, busts and full-body figures
  • Quick on-set corrections during filming

How to use it

  1. Soften the material: heat Monster Clay SOFT in its original container in the microwave at short intervals of 15-20 seconds, or in a conventional oven at low temperature. The container is microwave-safe and withstands up to 250 °C in the oven.
  2. Check the consistency: carefully remove the container — the material will be very soft. Wait a few minutes until it reaches a comfortable working temperature for your hands.
  3. Model by hand or with tools: work the clay directly with your fingers or with modelling tools. Its low tackiness prevents it from sticking to tools.
  4. Refine the details: for very fine details, locally heat the area with a hot-air dryer or a warmed metal spatula. This allows you to melt and smooth surfaces with precision.
  5. Prepare for moulding: before pouring the platinum silicone, make sure the sculpture is clean and free of contaminants. It is not necessary to apply a release agent on Monster Clay SOFT for most silicones.
  6. Demould and reuse: after moulding, recover the clay, melt it again and reuse it. It does not lose its properties through heating and cooling cycles.

Usage tips

Optimal working temperature

At standard workshop room temperature (20-22 °C), Monster Clay SOFT is already workable, but gentle heating noticeably improves fluidity for hand modelling. If your workshop is cold, heat in microwave intervals until you achieve the desired plasticity. Avoid overheating: excessively melted material temporarily loses its structure and can stain porous surfaces.

Compatibility with platinum silicones

Being sulphur-free, Monster Clay SOFT does not inhibit the cure of addition silicones. Even so, keep the work area clean: external contaminants such as latex residue, cyanoacrylate adhesives or epoxy on the same tool can transfer to the sculpture surface and cause localised inhibition. Clean your modelling tools before using them on the final master.

Storage and reuse

Store leftover material in its original container tightly closed, at room temperature and away from direct heat sources. Monster Clay SOFT does not dry out or harden irreversibly, so its shelf life is practically indefinite. If over time the surface shows slight oxidation or dirt, remove that outer layer and the interior material will be in perfect condition.

Compatibility with platinum silicones: Monster Clay SOFT is sulphur-free and does not inhibit the cure of addition silicones. However, be aware that other materials present in your workshop can cause inhibition: sulphur-containing clays, latex, petroleum jelly, freshly cured epoxy resins, urethane rubbers or unsealed surfaces. Keep your tools clean and avoid cross-contamination between materials.

Frequently asked questions

What hardness of modelling clay is best for beginners?

It depends on the type of work. Monster Clay SOFT is ideal for beginners who model by hand and work on large pieces, as it requires less effort and causes less fatigue. If you are looking for greater detail definition with tools, a medium or high hardness will be more suitable. For large-format projects — such as a full head with neck and shoulders — Monster Clay SOFT is one of the most recommended options.

Can I mould directly onto this clay with platinum silicone?

Yes. Monster Clay SOFT is sulphur-free and does not inhibit the cure of platinum silicones, so you can pour the silicone directly onto the master without the need for a prior sealer. This is precisely one of its main advantages over other conventional clays that do contain sulphur.

How do you heat this clay to soften it?

The Monster Clay SOFT container is microwave-safe. Heat it at short intervals of 15-20 seconds until you achieve the desired consistency. You can also use a conventional oven at low temperature (the container withstands up to 250 °C) or apply localised heat with a hot-air dryer directly onto the work area.

Can the clay be reused after moulding?

Yes, indefinitely. Once the piece has been demoulded, simply melt Monster Clay SOFT and reuse it. It does not lose its properties through heating and cooling cycles. This is one of the most important economic advantages over polymer clays that cure permanently.

What is the difference between the different Monster Clay hardnesses?

Monster Clay SOFT is the softest version, designed for hand modelling, large-format pieces and Life Casting work. The harder versions allow for sharper edges and finer detail with tools, but require more pre-heating and more working effort. The choice depends on the size of the piece, the level of detail sought and the preferred working method.

Is this clay toxic? Can I use it in contact with skin?

Monster Clay SOFT is made with non-toxic food safe components. It is safe for workshop use, including Life Casting and FX makeup applications where it may come into contact with skin. Even so, it is recommended to wash hands after prolonged use, as with any workshop material.

How much clay do I need to sculpt a full head and bust?

For a full head with neck and part of the bust up to the shoulders, a 2.05 kg container of Monster Clay SOFT is usually sufficient when working over an internal support (armature or foam). If the piece is solid or includes large body volumes, you may need two containers. The reusability of the material allows you to recover and redistribute the surplus without waste.

Do I need to apply a release agent before pouring the silicone?

In most cases it is not necessary to apply a release agent on Monster Clay SOFT for platinum silicones, as the clay surface does not adhere to the silicone. However, if you use a porous containment mould (plaster, wood) you must seal and release that material. To clean silicone or clay residue from skin and tools, Isopropyl Myristate is a very effective mild solvent.
