What they are used for

BM Series tools are essential workshop instruments for any sculptural modelling process. Their metal profile allows you to work with precision on materials of varying consistency, from soft technical plastelines to hard waxes.

  • Sculpting fine details in professional modelling plastelines
  • Smoothing and softening surfaces before taking a mould
  • Texturising specific areas with millimetre-level control
  • Blending and amalgamating mouldable materials
  • Cleaning up edges, trimming flash and defining borders in clay and wax
  • Working on special effects models, artistic sculpture and prototyping
  • Cleaning channels and cavities in models during the finishing process

How to use

  1. Select the appropriate tip or end of the tool for the task: sharper ends for fine detail, more rounded ends for smoothing.
  2. Gently warm the plasteline or material to be modelled if necessary to improve workability.
  3. Apply controlled pressure and short strokes to sculpt or texturise. Avoid sudden leveraging movements that may deform adjacent areas.
  4. To smooth, lightly dampen the tip with water (on water-based clay) or run the metal at room temperature over sulphur-based plasteline or wax surfaces.
  5. Clean the tool with a dry cloth or one lightly dampened with a compatible solvent between uses to avoid cross-contamination of materials.
  6. Store tools dry, preferably in a protective case, to keep the tips in perfect condition.

Usage tips

Choose the tip for the task

Each BM Series tool has a specific geometry. Before purchasing several units, identify which operations you perform most frequently in your workshop: fine detail (slender tips), smoothing (flat or curved ends) or texturising (relief profiles). Combining 3–4 tools with different tips covers most professional working situations.

Temperature and material

With high-hardness plastelines, briefly applying a warm air gun over the area to be worked softens the material enough for the tool to glide effortlessly. With soft plastelines or waxes, work at room temperature or even with slightly cool hands to avoid unintentional marks.

Maintenance and cleaning

Stainless steel requires no special maintenance, but it is advisable to clean the tools after each session. For oil- or wax-based plastelines, a cloth with a little isopropyl alcohol removes residue without attacking the metal. Do not use abrasive products that may scratch the surface, as any micro-scratches will retain material and hinder fine work.

Frequently asked questions

What materials can these modelling tools be used with?

BM Series tools work with any mouldable material: water clay, polymer clay, professional oil-based plastelines such as Monster Clay or Chavant Medium, sculpting waxes and modelling compounds in general. Stainless steel does not react with any of these materials.

How many units do I need for professional work?

It depends on the variety of tasks you perform. For regular professional use, a set of 4–6 tools with different tips is usually sufficient to cover fine detail, smoothing and texturising. You can build up the set according to the specific needs of each project.

Can these tools be used with resins or silicones?

Metal tools are not the usual choice for liquid resins or silicones, as mixing spatulas or stirrers are used for those materials. However, they are useful for removing solid excess or working on already-cured master models before the moulding process.

How do I clean the tools after using them with plasteline?

A dry cloth removes most of the material. For more stubborn residue, use a cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Avoid abrasive scourers or sandpaper that may scratch the steel surface, as micro-scratches hinder fine work afterwards.

Is it sold per unit or as a set?

The price is per unit. You can select the specific tool or tools you need according to the tip and the tasks in your workshop. If you are unsure which reference to choose, write to [email protected].

What is the difference between a metal tool and a wooden one?

Stainless steel is non-porous, does not absorb moisture or material, and allows cleaner gliding over plastelines and waxes. Wooden tools can retain pigments and materials in the grain and wear down with use. For precision professional work, metal offers greater durability and repeatability.

Can I use these tools with Monster Clay HARD?

Yes, although Monster Clay Hard requires pre-warming the area to be worked so the material is workable. With the material at the right temperature, BM Series tools work perfectly for defining details and edges.

Where can I get technical assistance on which tool to choose?

You can contact the Feroca technical team by calling 914 481 271, writing to [email protected] or through Feroca's social media channels.
