What it is used for

The Phrozen Aqua Red Clay 8K is designed for projects that demand extreme detail reproduction and dimensional precision. The reddish clay colour allows textures and surface relief to be appreciated with greater contrast under any workshop lighting, which is especially useful during review and manual retouching stages.

  • Collectible miniatures and figurines with high-resolution textures
  • Jewellery and accessory prototypes requiring clean surfaces
  • Digital sculpture models for reviewing shape and proportion
  • Master parts for silicone or polyurethane moulds
  • FX props and accessories with complex geometry
  • Architecture and scale product design models

How to use it

  1. Shake the bottle thoroughly for at least 30 seconds before pouring the resin into the printer vat.
  2. Pour the amount needed for the print, avoiding overfilling the vat.
  3. Set the exposure parameters in your slicing software according to the profile recommended by Phrozen for the Aqua Red Clay 8K and your specific printer.
  4. Start the print and monitor the first layers to ensure good adhesion to the build plate.
  5. Once printing is complete, carefully remove the part and remove any excess liquid resin.
  6. Wash the part in 99.9% isopropyl alcohol for the recommended time (refer to the manufacturer's instructions).
  7. Allow the part to air-dry completely before proceeding to the final UV cure.
  8. Perform the UV cure in a curing station or with a UV lamp until you obtain a hard, tack-free surface.
  9. Sand, paint or work the part according to your finishing requirements.

Usage tips

Working temperature

Resin viscosity varies with ambient temperature. Below 20 °C the resin becomes thicker and can increase adhesion failures on the first layers. The ideal working range is between 22 °C and 28 °C. If your workspace is cold, you can warm the bottle by submerging it in warm (never hot) water for a few minutes before pouring.

Vat and leftover resin management

If you are not going to print for several days, return the leftover resin to the original bottle by filtering it through a fine-mesh strainer to remove any partially cured resin residue. Do not leave resin in the vat exposed to ambient light for extended periods: it can begin to gel and damage the FEP. Store the bottle closed, in a cool place away from direct sunlight.

Proper washing and curing

Poor washing is the main cause of sticky surfaces after curing. Always use high-purity isopropyl alcohol (99.9%) and renew the bath when it becomes saturated with resin (the liquid turns from clear to cloudy). For UV curing, make sure to rotate the part or use a rotating station so that all angles receive uniform exposure; insufficient curing leaves the part brittle with surfaces that are not fully hardened.

Frequently asked questions

Is it compatible with any resin printer?

The Phrozen Aqua Red Clay 8K is optimised for LCD/MSLA printers with 8K screens, such as the Phrozen Sonic MEGA 8K V2. It can work on lower-resolution printers, although the result will not take full advantage of the formula's detail capability. Always adjust exposure times to your machine's profile.

How long does each layer take to cure?

Exposure times depend on your printer's light source power, firmware version and configured layer thickness. Check the specific exposure profile for the Phrozen Aqua Red Clay 8K on the Phrozen website or in your printer's community. As a general reference for mid-range 8K printers, normal layers are typically around 2–4 seconds and base layers between 30 and 60 seconds, but these values must be validated with an exposure test (matrix test).

Can I mix this resin with other resins?

In general, it is possible to mix resins of the same chemical family as long as they are compatible with each other. However, mixing resins from different manufacturers or formulations can alter curing times and the mechanical properties of the final result. If you experiment with blends, carry out prior tests before using the mixture on a production part.

Is the resin suitable for indoor use?

The Phrozen Aqua Red Clay 8K is formulated with low odour, which improves the working experience in spaces with limited ventilation. Even so, it is recommended to always maintain minimum ventilation during printing and washing, use nitrile gloves and avoid direct contact of the liquid resin with skin and eyes. Uncured resin is an irritant.

How do I correctly dispose of leftover resin and waste?

Never pour liquid resin down the drain. To dispose of small amounts of leftover resin, expose them to direct sunlight or a UV lamp until they solidify completely; once solid they can be discarded as solid waste in accordance with local regulations. Used isopropyl alcohol from washing, once saturated, must also be handled as chemical waste.

Can the printed part be painted?

Yes. The red clay colour of the Phrozen Aqua Red Clay 8K is precisely one of its advantages for painting: it makes it easy to see shadows and surface details during priming and painting. Conventional acrylic primer, water-based paints or enamel paints can all be used. It is advisable to lightly sand the surface and apply a primer coat before painting to improve adhesion.

What is the difference between this resin and a standard lower-resolution resin?

The main difference lies in the ability to reproduce very fine details: the Phrozen Aqua Red Clay 8K formulation is tuned to work with the highest pixel density offered by 8K screens, which translates into sharper lines, more defined textures and less stepping effect (aliasing) on curved surfaces. In addition, its low shrinkage reduces the appearance of distortions in parts with complex geometry.

How long can I store the resin without using it?

Stored correctly (bottle closed, temperature between 15 °C and 30 °C, away from direct light), the resin maintains its properties for at least 12 months from the date of manufacture. Always shake well before use, especially if it has been stored for several weeks, as pigments may settle.
