Kit of 3 silicone ribs in different sizes for modelling clay, polymers, pastry and concrete. Flexible, durable and ergonomic.

Silicone ribs are essential modelling tools for potters, sculptors and craftspeople. Their ergonomic crescent shape allows for a firm grip and even pressure across the working surface, achieving cleaner and more controlled finishes than rigid tools. This kit includes 3 units of different sizes and profiles to suit every stage of the modelling process.

What they are used for

Silicone ribs are used in any discipline that requires shaping, smoothing or defining soft or semi-soft surfaces. The flexibility of the material allows you to work both on the interiors of concave pieces and on convex surfaces in a single motion.

  • Smoothing and refining clay pieces on the wheel or hand-built
  • Sculpture with professional modelling clays
  • Working with polymer clays and epoxy putties such as Epoxy Putty 610
  • Modelling and decoration in artistic pastry and ice sculptures
  • Decorative concrete and microcement work
  • Surface finishing on composites and laminates with a roller or by hand
  • Creating textures and details on FX pieces

How to use

  1. Select the rib size appropriate for the area you are working on: the smallest for detail areas, the largest for wide surfaces.
  2. Hold the rib between your thumb and fingers, resting your palm lightly on the back to control pressure.
  3. Apply the rib to the surface using circular or sweeping motions, depending on the finish you want.
  4. For concave areas, gently flex the rib with your fingers so it follows the curve of the piece.
  5. For firmer surfaces such as harder modelling clays, warm the area slightly before working to make smoothing easier.
  6. Clean the rib with water and soap or with 99.9% isopropyl alcohol at the end of the session, especially if you have worked with pigmented or coloured materials.

Usage tips

Choose the right size for each stage of work

The largest rib covers more surface area and is ideal for the initial smoothing and volume-building stages. The medium and small sizes let you refine details and work in hard-to-reach areas. Having all three on hand during a modelling session greatly speeds up the process without having to switch tools constantly.

Pressure control for different materials

With soft clays or warmed modelling clays, apply light pressure and let the flexibility of the rib do the work. With firmer materials such as decorative concrete or epoxy putties in a paste phase, you can apply more force without risk of deforming the tool. Silicone does not absorb pigments or porous materials, so the risk of contaminating a piece with residue from previous work is minimal if cleaned properly.

Combine with other finishing tools

For laminates and flat surfaces, complement the work with a special laminating roller or a metal de-airing roller. Ribs are perfect for curved areas where a roller cannot reach. If working with very wet surfaces (wheel-thrown ceramics), lightly dampen the rib to prevent clay from sticking.

Frequently asked questions

What materials are these modelling tools suitable for?

Silicone ribs are compatible with a wide range of materials: ceramic clay, modelling polymers, professional modelling clays, sugar paste and fondant, decorative concrete, microcement and epoxy putties in paste phase. Their non-porous surface makes cleaning between different materials easy.

Can they be used on the potter's wheel?

Yes, in fact it is one of their main uses. Silicone pottery ribs are used both on the wheel and in hand-building or slab techniques. The flexibility of the material allows them to adapt to the curve of the piece as it spins without marking or scratching the surface.

How are these tools cleaned between uses?

For clay or water-based materials, water and mild soap is sufficient. For modelling clays, resins or greasy materials, the most effective method is to wipe with 99.9% isopropyl alcohol and a clean cloth. Silicone is not damaged by alcohol or common workshop solvents at room temperature.

Do they withstand heat if a heat gun or lamp is used to soften the clay?

Silicone ribs can withstand moderate working temperatures without deforming. However, applying direct heat to the tool is not recommended. If you need to soften the modelling clay, heat the piece first and then work on it with the rib at room temperature.

What is the difference between the three sizes included in the kit?

Each rib has a different profile and size to cover different needs: the largest for general smoothing and wide surfaces, the medium for curves and transitions, and the small one for detail work and restricted-access areas. Using all three in the same session optimises workflow.

Are they useful for FX sculpture or prosthetics?

Yes. In FX sculpture, silicone ribs are used to smooth and refine the surface of professional modelling clays such as Monster Clay before making the mould. They allow clean surfaces with no tool marks, which reduces finishing work on the positive afterwards.

Can they be used with epoxy or polyester putties?

Yes, as long as the putty is in a paste phase and workable. For example, with Epoxy Putty 610 you can use the rib to model and smooth before curing begins. Silicone does not adhere to cured resins and does not become impregnated.

How long do they last and do they deteriorate with continued use?

Made from high-quality silicone, the ribs show no burrs or cracks under normal use conditions. With proper maintenance (cleaning after each session and storage away from aggressive solvents or excessive heat) they have a very long service life even with intensive professional use.
