What it is used for
This palette is designed for special effects and character makeup artists who need to add realistic organic textures and pigmentation to characters, both on skin and on prosthetics. The two colors — Freckles and Age Spot — allow the creation of natural gradations of freckles and age spots with great tonal control.
- Realistic freckles on all skin tones, including darker tones (using Age Spot as a base or contrast color)
- Age spots and irregular pigmentation
- Character work featuring sun damage or skin aging
- Direct application on silicone or latex prosthetics
- Quick touch-ups on set thanks to the compact On Set format
- Combining Freckles and Age Spot to create freckles of varying intensity within the same scene
How to use it
- Make sure the surface (skin, silicone or latex) is clean and free of grease or residue.
- Activate the color in the palette with a few drops of Skin Illustrator Activator, Slow Activator or isopropyl alcohol 99% (IPA). Never use 70° alcohol, MEK, acetone or water.
- Load the brush or sponge with the right amount of activated product: less is more with this range.
- Apply using stippling or splodging to achieve the organic pattern of freckles or spots. An irregular movement is what creates the natural appearance.
- Allow to dry for a few seconds. The alcohol evaporates quickly and the color sets.
- Layer coats to increase intensity or blend Freckles and Age Spot according to the actor's skin tone.
- To remove, use Telesis Super Solv with a sponge or cotton pad, using gentle movements.
Usage tips
Correct activation: the most important step
The performance of Skin Illustrator colors depends directly on proper activation. Always use isopropyl alcohol 99% (IPA) or the range-specific activators. 70° alcohol contains too much water and does not activate the pigments properly, resulting in dull colors and poor durability. If you are working on set in high temperatures or need more working time, opt for the Slow Activator.
Splodging technique for natural freckles
To achieve organic-looking freckles, avoid round brushes with a defined tip. Work with frayed brushes, irregular makeup sponges or even gloved fingers. The trick is to vary the size, orientation and pressure of each application. Combine Freckles for lighter freckles and Age Spot for darker ones, respecting the natural distribution: greater density on the nose and cheekbones, less on the neck and forehead.
Compatibility with silicone and latex prosthetics
On silicone prosthetics, make sure the piece has no Release agent residue in the area to be painted: clean thoroughly with IPA before applying color. On latex, adhesion is very good; even so, apply thin layers to prevent the product from cracking when the prosthetic moves. In both cases, the color sets firmly and withstands movement well without the need for additional setting powders.
Frequently asked questions
What alcohol should be used to activate these palettes?
You should use isopropyl alcohol 99% (IPA) or the Skin Illustrator range-specific activators (Activator or Slow Activator). Never use 70° alcohol, water, acetone or MEK: they ruin the result and drastically reduce color adhesion.
How long do these colors last on skin during filming?
Skin Illustrator On Set colors offer exceptional durability once correctly activated. They hold up perfectly through long shooting days, moderate sweat and movement, without the need for frequent touch-ups. In areas with heavy perspiration, a light alcohol-based setting spray can extend the result.
Can it be used over previously painted silicone prosthetics?
Yes, as long as the base paint is fully cured and dry. The Splodger Duo palette adheres well to silicone surfaces already painted with compatible colors, making it ideal for adding freckle or spot details in a final stage of character makeup.
How are these colors removed at the end of the day?
They are easily removed with Telesis Super Solv applied with a sponge or cotton pad. Simply dampen the area slightly, allow it to work for a few seconds and remove gently. No scrubbing or harsh products are needed.
Can I mix the two colors in the palette together?
Yes, Freckles and Age Spot are designed to be used in a complementary way. You can mix them directly on the brush or on a mixing palette to obtain intermediate tones, allowing you to adapt the result to different skin tones without losing naturalness.
Is this palette compatible with other Skin Illustrator range colors?
Absolutely. All Skin Illustrator range products share the same base and are activated with the same activators, so you can combine the Splodger Duo with palettes such as the Flesh Tone Palette, the Complexion Palette or the Dark Fleshtone Palette without any compatibility issues.
What is the difference between the On Set format and other Skin Illustrator palettes?
The On Set format is designed specifically for use on set or film production: compact format, easy to carry and with very specific colors for particular character makeup needs. Standard palettes typically have a larger number of colors or a broader range for studio or workshop use. Both are fully compatible with each other.
Is it safe to apply these colors directly on sensitive skin?
Skin Illustrator colors are formulated for cosmetic use in professional character makeup. Even so, as with any alcohol-activated makeup product, it is recommended to carry out a patch test on a small area before applying to very sensitive skin or skin with specific conditions. Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.
