What it is used for

This palette is designed for professional makeup artists working in audiovisual productions, theatre and special effects. The six dark, saturated shades of the Dark 3 range allow you to build shadows, tone silicone prosthetics and create complex chromatic transitions on any character makeup surface.

  • Painting and shading silicone and latex prosthetics on set
  • Creating contours, shadows and depth on character makeup looks
  • Body and facial makeup for film and television
  • Direct blending with other colours in the Skin Illustrator range for custom shades
  • On-set touch-ups: colours maintain stability under film lighting
  • Long-wear application on skin, especially when set with HD matte spray

How to use it

  1. Make sure the surface (skin, silicone or latex) is clean, dry and free of grease or soluble oils.
  2. Load the brush, sponge or applicator with just the right amount of pigment — these colours are highly concentrated and go a long way.
  3. Apply in thin, overlapping layers to build up the shade gradually, blending colours directly on the palette or on the surface.
  4. To blend shades, combine colours from the Dark 3 palette with any other palette in the Skin Illustrator Flesh Tone or Complexion range.
  5. Once the makeup is applied, set with a compatible HD matte spray to prevent smudging and increase on-set durability.
  6. To remove, use an appropriate grease makeup solvent or remover; do not rub dry.

Usage tips

Work in thin layers

The Skin Illustrator cream/wax formula is highly pigmented. It is best to start with almost-dry layers and build up intensity gradually. Applying too much product at once makes blending difficult and can alter the texture of an already-painted silicone prosthetic.

Blend with other palettes in the range

The dark shades in Dark 3 (Violet, Mogun, Hawaiian, Mayan) are especially useful as shadows and accents when combined with the base colours of the Flesh Tone palette or the special effects of the FX palette. Compatibility between palettes in the same range is total.

Palette storage and maintenance

Store the palette closed, away from heat and direct light. If any colour dries out on the surface, simply add a drop of mineral oil or grease makeup activator and work it gently with a brush. Do not insert dirty brushes into the colours: cross-contamination alters the shades over time.

Frequently asked questions

Is this palette suitable for direct use on sensitive skin?

The Dark 3 palette is formulated for professional use in film production and character makeup, with a cream/wax base that has a long tradition in the industry. It is generally well tolerated, but as with any artistic makeup product, a patch test on sensitive skin is recommended before applying to large areas.

Can it be used on silicone prosthetics without prior preparation?

Yes. The Skin Illustrator formula adheres directly to silicone without the need for a specific primer in most cases. To ensure maximum adhesion and durability, the prosthetic surface should be clean and free of any release agent residue or uncured silicone.

How long do the colours last without a setting spray during filming?

Without a setting spray, durability depends on perspiration, heat from lights and movement. For long shoots or under intense lighting, always set with a compatible HD matte spray. With proper setting, colours remain stable throughout the entire shooting day.

Can the colours in this palette be mixed with those from other Skin Illustrator palettes?

Yes, all palettes in the Skin Illustrator range share the same formulation base, making them fully miscible with each other. You can combine the dark shades of Dark 3 with the flesh tones of the Flesh Tone, the skin tones of the Complexion, or the effects of the FX without any compatibility issues.

What tools work best for applying this type of grease makeup?

Flat or fan-shaped synthetic bristle brushes are ideal for blending. Latex or cellulose sponges allow you to work textures and apply by stippling. For fine detail areas — hairlines, veins, marks — a fine brush or mascara wand are the most precise options.

How is this makeup removed at the end of filming?

Being a grease base, it is effectively removed with a cleansing oil, mineral oil or a specific remover for wax and grease makeup. Apply the remover, allow it to penetrate for a few seconds, then remove with a gauze pad or cotton wool without rubbing hard, to avoid irritating the skin or damaging the prosthetic.

Is it suitable for theatre makeup as well as film?

Yes. Although the Dark 3 palette has been designed with film production in mind, its performance under intense lighting makes it equally suitable for theatrical productions, opera and any context requiring stable, highly pigmented makeup.

Is this palette specific to dark skin tones?

Not exclusively. The name Dark 3 refers to the shade range of the colours included (violets, toasted browns, tropical and dark tones), not to it being restricted to specific skin phototypes. These colours are primarily used as shadows, accents and character makeup elements on any skin type or surface.
