What it's used for
This kit is designed for professional work in character makeup, special effects and prosthetic makeup. The palette acts as a controlled mixing surface, while the spatula allows you to apply, spread and blend materials with millimetre precision. It is especially useful when working with low-viscosity or pigmented products that require prior homogenisation.
- Mixing platinum silicones with pigments or additives before pouring
- Applying and blending encapsulants on FX prosthesis edges
- Homogenising Fleet Street DirtWorks matting powders with bases or binders
- Mixing silicone adhesives for character makeup
- Working with Attagel or other thickeners to adjust viscosity
- Preparing putties, waxes and mouldable materials for prosthetics
- Use as a reference surface in special effects makeup
How to use it
- Clean the palette and spatula before each use with a cloth or suitable solvent to remove any residue from previous sessions.
- Place the required amounts of the materials you are going to mix on the palette: silicone, pigment, encapsulant or any other component.
- Use the spatula to mix with circular and folding movements, ensuring complete homogenisation without introducing unnecessary air bubbles.
- Apply the material directly from the palette or pick up the precise amount with the spatula for each working area.
- To blend prosthesis edges, work with the spatula at a low angle, using gentle and progressive movements.
- When finished, clean both pieces immediately with an appropriate solvent before the materials cure or harden on the metal.
Usage tips
Keep the surface spotless
The mirror finish is not just aesthetic: a smooth surface prevents materials from getting trapped in microporosity, which facilitates homogeneous mixing and reduces waste. Avoid scratching the palette with abrasive tools. If deep marks appear, the palette may act as a retention surface for residue from previous sessions and contaminate future mixes.
Temperature and sensitive materials
Stainless steel conducts heat well, which can accelerate the gel time of silicones or resins on very hot days. In warm environments, work quickly or keep the palette in a cool area before using it. For highly exothermic materials, you can rest the palette on a cold surface to gain working time.
Versatility beyond FX
Although designed for special effects, this kit works equally well in theatrical character makeup, high-end artistic makeup and small workshop tasks with resins or pigments. If you work with rooting needles to implant hair in prosthetics, the palette is the ideal surface for managing adhesives and bonding materials during the process.
Frequently asked questions
What advantage does a stainless steel palette have over other mixing surfaces?
Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, does not absorb materials and withstands aggressive solvents without deteriorating. Unlike plastic or wood surfaces, it does not react with platinum silicones or resins, preventing contamination. Moreover, cleaning is immediate and the service life is practically unlimited if well maintained.
Can it be used to mix platinum silicones without risk of inhibition?
Yes. Stainless steel does not contain sulphur or compounds that inhibit the curing of addition (platinum) silicones. It is one of the safest surfaces for this type of work. Just make sure the palette is perfectly clean and free of residue from previous sessions that could contain inhibiting agents.
What products should be used to clean the palette correctly after use?
It depends on the material used. For uncured silicones, acetone or isopropyl alcohol are usually sufficient. For resins or adhesives, use the solvent recommended by the manufacturer of the material in question. Always clean before the material cures, as once hardened it may require mechanical scraping that could mark the surface.
Is it suitable for working with FX prosthesis encapsulants?
Absolutely. The mirror palette is ideal for preparing and applying encapsulants such as Super-Cap or Key-Cap. Its smooth surface allows you to control the exact amount of material and facilitates blending of prosthesis edges with the spatula included in the kit, achieving imperceptible transitions on the skin.
What is the difference between the palette and the spatula in the kit?
The palette (11.5 × 7.5 cm) acts primarily as a work surface: on it you mix, deposit and manage materials. The spatula (12 cm) is the application and blending tool, with which you transfer the material from the palette to the prosthesis or work area with precision. They complement each other: without the palette as a mixing base, the spatula loses much of its usefulness.
Can I use these tools for work with resins or only for silicones?
They are suitable for silicones, encapsulants, character makeup adhesives, low-viscosity resins and practically any workshop material requiring controlled mixing and application. Stainless steel does not interact with any of these materials, provided cleaning is carried out before curing.
Does the rubber grip on the palette withstand solvents?
The rubber lining is designed to improve grip during work, not for prolonged contact with aggressive solvents. Avoid submerging the handle in acetone or other strong solvents. To clean the palette, apply the solvent only to the metal work surface with a cloth, without soaking the grip.
