Transparent epoxy top coat for jewellery and costume jewellery. Mix ratio 100:60 by weight, 25 min working time, glossy finish over carbon fibre and metal substrates.

Epofer EX201+E202 is a two-component epoxy top coat system formulated for glossy, transparent finish applications. Especially suited for jewellery and carbon fibre laminates, it allows decorative elements to be fixed and encapsulated onto metal substrates with a clean, uniform result. With 25 minutes of working time, it offers enough margin for detailed applications without rushing.

What it is used for

Epofer EX201+E202 is designed for surface finishes where transparency, gloss and adhesion to a variety of substrates are required. It is the go-to choice in artisan jewellery workshops and in carbon fibre laminating processes when a top coat is needed to seal and protect the surface with a clean visual finish.

  • Finish coat over jewellery and artisan costume jewellery pieces
  • Encapsulation of decorative elements in earrings, cameos and pendants: dried flowers, photos, paper cutouts, fabrics
  • Fixing of elements onto metal substrates
  • Glossy top coat over carbon fibre fabric laminates for a uniform finish
  • Thin protective and sealing layers over decorative surfaces
  • Final step in carbon/epoxy laminating processes

How to use it

  1. Prepare the work surface: clean and degrease the substrate. If working on metals or porous surfaces, make sure they are completely dry.
  2. Weigh the components in the correct ratio: 100 parts resin EX201 to 60 parts hardener E202 by weight (or 100:70 by volume). Use a precision scale to get the exact ratio.
  3. Mix both components for at least 2–3 minutes, stirring slowly and evenly to avoid introducing bubbles. Scrape the sides and bottom of the container thoroughly.
  4. Apply the mixture to the surface with a fine brush, spatula, or by controlled pouring depending on the piece. Work in thin, even layers.
  5. If you are encapsulating elements (flowers, photos, fibres), place them on the first semi-cured layer or apply epoxy over them to seal them completely.
  6. Leave to cure in a horizontal position at room temperature for 24 hours. Protect the pieces from dust during curing.
  7. Once cured, check the finish. If a second coat is needed for extra gloss or coverage, lightly sand with fine-grit sandpaper and apply a fresh mix.

Usage tips

Bubble control in thin layers

When applying very thin coats over jewellery, surface bubbles are the most common issue. To eliminate them, briefly pass the flame of a lighter approximately 10–15 cm above the surface immediately after applying the mixture: the heat reduces surface tension and the bubbles disappear without damaging the epoxy. Do not hold the heat too long or too close, as this will interfere with curing.

Temperature and working time

The 25-minute working time is calculated at standard room temperature (20–22 °C). In summer or in warm workshops, the mixture gels faster. If you need more margin, rest the mixing container on a cool surface or prepare smaller quantities. Conversely, in cold environments curing slows down and may take more than 24 hours to reach full hardness.

Colouring the top coat

Epofer EX201+E202 accepts pigmentation with translucent pigments for resins, allowing jewel-colour finishes while preserving the system's characteristic transparency. Add the pigment to the resin before incorporating the hardener, mix thoroughly, then add component B in the usual ratio. Use minimal amounts of pigment so as not to alter the cure ratio.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this epoxy top coat to make thick castings or fill moulds?

It is not designed for volume casting. Epofer EX201+E202 is a surface finishing system optimised for thin layers. For castings or parts with significant volume, you need an epoxy casting resin with lower exotherm. Reserve this product for its primary purpose: coating, sealing and encapsulating elements in jewellery.

How long do I have to work after mixing the components?

The working time is 25 minutes at room temperature (approximately 20–22 °C). After that time the mixture begins to gel and can no longer be applied correctly. Only prepare the amount you will use within that time window.

Is it essential to weigh the components, or can I mix them by eye?

To achieve a correct cure, it is essential to respect the ratio: 100 parts resin EX201 to 60 parts hardener E202 by weight. A significant deviation may cause the piece to remain tacky, soft, or never cure at all. Use a precision scale, especially for small pieces where the margin of error is greater.

Can it be applied over plastic, wood or paper?

Yes, Epofer EX201+E202 adheres well to a wide variety of substrates: metal, wood, paper, cardboard, fabric and many plastics. On porous surfaces, the first coat acts as a sealer. On very smooth or low surface energy plastics (such as polypropylene or polyethylene), adhesion may be insufficient without prior treatment.

What happens if the pieces have a tacky surface after curing?

A tacky surface usually indicates an error in the mix ratio (excess or insufficient hardener) or insufficient mixing. It can also occur if the piece has cured at a very low temperature. In many cases, applying a fresh, correctly mixed coat over the tacky surface and allowing it to cure again can solve the problem.

Is this system suitable for jewellery that will be in contact with skin?

Once fully cured, epoxy is chemically inert and generally well tolerated in occasional skin contact. However, the liquid resin and hardener are irritants: always handle with gloves and in a ventilated area. If the pieces will have prolonged contact with sensitive skin, ensure the cure is complete (minimum 24 hours at an adequate temperature).

Can I add pigment to obtain translucent colours?

Yes. The transparent system of Epofer EX201+E202 accepts translucent pigments for resins, which allow jewel tones with transparency. Add the pigment to the resin before incorporating the hardener and mix thoroughly before making the final mixture.

What is the difference between using this top coat and a conventional lacquer or varnish?

A conventional varnish or lacquer forms a film that can scratch, flake or yellow over time. Epofer EX201+E202, curing through a chemical reaction between resin and hardener, forms a thermoset layer with greater hardness, better adhesion and significantly superior chemical resistance. In jewellery, this translates into more durable pieces with a better long-term finish.
