What it is used for
This primer is designed for surface preparation in bodywork, customisation and restoration projects. It works as an adhesion primer in a single coat or as a filling primer applied in multiple coats, covering minor imperfections and creating a uniform base for the subsequent finish.
- Preparation of car bodywork before topcoat paint
- Filling minor imperfections, scratches and pores on metal surfaces
- Adhesion primer on aluminium and steel
- Base coat prior to applying FullDip Liquid Vinyl in solid colours
- Preparation of polyester and fibreglass parts
- Priming wood and compatible plastic parts
- Surface preparation for customisation and airbrushing projects
How to use it
- Clean and degrease the surface to be treated. Remove all dirt, loose rust and poorly adhered paint layers.
- Sand the surface with medium-grit sandpaper to promote primer adhesion.
- Mask off areas you do not want to prime with masking tape and paper.
- Shake the can for at least 2 minutes before use.
- Apply the first coat in thin, even layers, holding the can approximately 25–30 cm from the surface.
- Allow 10 to 15 minutes drying time between each coat.
- Apply a minimum of 4 coats for good filling and coverage.
- After 3 hours from the last coat, sand with fine wet-and-dry sandpaper (P400–P600) to smooth the surface.
- Remove sanding dust and apply the desired final finish.
Usage tips
Temperature and application conditions
Always apply in an environment with temperatures between 15 °C and 25 °C and moderate humidity. Very low temperatures slow down drying and can cause an uneven film. Avoid applying outdoors in direct wind, which can deposit dust on the fresh coat or produce a rough finish.
Thin coats, better results
The temptation to apply thick coats for faster filling ends in runs and much longer drying times. Always apply thin, cross-spray coats: first horizontally and then vertically. With 4 or more thin coats you will achieve even filling, no bubbles and easier sanding.
Intermediate sanding for better topcoat adhesion
If you are going to apply FullDip Liquid Vinyl or another spray finish on top, sand the dry primer with P600 wet to remove any imperfections and promote adhesion. Clean the dust thoroughly with a microfibre cloth before painting.
Frequently asked questions
How many coats should be applied for a good result?
A minimum of 4 coats is recommended. The FullDip Acrylic Primer 1K is formulated to be applied in successive thin coats. With 4 or more thin coats you achieve greater filling, better levelling and more efficient subsequent sanding than with 2 thick coats.
How long should you wait between coats?
10 to 15 minutes is sufficient before applying the next coat. Touch dry occurs at 30 minutes, and the primer is sandable from 3 hours after the last application.
On which materials can this primer be applied?
The FullDip Acrylic Primer 1K is compatible with metal, aluminium, polyester, wood and many types of plastics. On very flexible or low surface energy plastics, it is advisable to carry out a prior adhesion test before applying to the entire part.
Can it be wet-sanded?
Yes. Once the 3-hour drying time has elapsed, you can wet-sand with P400 to P600 grit sandpaper. Wet sanding generates less dust and allows a finer finish before applying the topcoat.
Can it be applied directly over rust or unprepared surfaces?
No. The surface must be clean, dry and free of loose rust, grease or dust. The primer needs a properly prepared substrate to adhere correctly. Remove rust with sandpaper or an abrasive disc before priming.
Is it necessary to use an anti-corrosion primer before this primer?
On metals exposed to the elements or in areas at risk of corrosion, it is advisable to first apply a specific anti-corrosion primer. The FullDip Acrylic Primer 1K acts as a filling and adhesion primer, but is not specifically formulated as an anti-corrosion product.
What finish can be applied over this primer?
Once sanded, the primer accepts acrylic and vinyl paints and most solvent-based spray paints. It is an ideal base coat prior to applying FullDip Liquid Vinyl or spray finishes such as FullDip Liquid Vinyl Military.
Do you need to shake the can before use?
Yes, it is essential. Shake the can vigorously for at least 2 minutes before starting. During application, if you take long breaks, shake again to keep the mixture homogeneous and ensure correct pressure and atomisation from the cross-spray nozzle.
