Thixotropic Latex Thickener
3,99 € Tax incl.
The Thixotropic Latex Thickener is an additive formulated to increase the viscosity of ammonia-based liquid latex and make it suitable for working on vertical and non-porous surfaces without dripping. With a minimal dosage — between 1% and 5% by weight — you get a latex that stays where you apply it, allowing you to build uniform layers with full control.

What it is used for
This thickener is designed for professionals and technicians who need to apply latex in conditions where the standard viscosity of the product is insufficient. It is essential when latex flows too freely and does not allow controlled layers to be built up.
- Applying latex on vertical surfaces without dripping
- Working on non-porous surfaces where latex tends to slide off
- Building successive layers for masks, prosthetics and special effects
- Moulding and coating parts with complex geometries
- Manufacturing theatrical and character masks over anatomical armatures such as the ED HEAD H2.0 or the ALANNA HEAD H2.0
- Decorative and special effects coatings in set design
How to use it
- Measure the amount of latex you are going to use and calculate the percentage of thickener needed (between 1% and 5% by weight depending on the desired viscosity).
- Add the thickener directly to the latex in small amounts while mixing constantly and gently.
- Mix carefully until you obtain a uniform consistency. Avoid beating vigorously to prevent incorporating air bubbles.
- Let the mixture rest for a few minutes so that the thixotropic additive acts fully and the viscosity stabilises.
- Apply the thickened latex in thin layers with a brush onto the desired surface.
- Allow each layer to dry completely before applying the next one. Proper drying between layers is essential to achieve a good final result.
- Repeat the application and drying process until the desired thickness is reached.
- Once the work is finished, clean the tools with water before the latex cures.
Usage tips
Adjust the dosage to the job
Always start with the lowest dosage (1%) and increase until you reach the viscosity you need. For highly vertical or steeply inclined surfaces, you can go up to 5%. An excess of thickener can make application more difficult and alter the surface appearance of the final piece. Always run a small test before preparing a large batch of mixture.
Take care with the mixing process
Mix slowly with circular movements. Thixotropic additives need a minimum integration time to distribute correctly. Rushed mixing or using a high-speed mixer can introduce bubbles and result in a final surface with imperfections. If bubbles appear, leave the covered mixture to rest for 10–15 minutes before using it.
Compatibility and final painting
The thickener does not alter the compatibility of latex with pigments or with specific latex paints. If you are going to paint the finished piece, make sure all layers are completely dry before applying any finish. Always store the latex mixture with thickener in an airtight container in a cool place to extend its shelf life.
Frequently asked questions
What is a thixotropic thickener used for in latex?
A thixotropic thickener increases the viscosity of latex at rest, which prevents the material from dripping when applied to vertical or non-porous surfaces. Feroca's Thixotropic Latex Thickener allows you to work with controlled layers without losing the workability of the latex.
What percentage of thickener should I use?
The recommended dosage is between 1% and 5% by weight relative to the latex. For light work or surfaces with little inclination, 1–2% is usually sufficient. For steep verticals or very smooth, non-porous surfaces, it may be necessary to go up to 5%. It is always advisable to carry out a prior test with a small amount.
Can it be used with any type of latex?
This thickener is formulated for ammonia-based latex, such as Feroca's Liquid Latex for Moulds. It is not suitable for solvent-based latex or other liquid elastomers.
Does the thickener affect the drying time of the latex?
At normal doses (1–5%), the thickener does not significantly modify the drying time of the latex. Drying still depends on factors such as ambient temperature, relative humidity and the thickness of each applied layer.
How many layers need to be applied?
The number of layers depends on the final thickness you need. For FX masks and prosthetics, typically between 5 and 15 thin layers are applied, allowing each one to dry completely before the next. With thickened latex, each layer can be slightly thicker without the risk of dripping.
Does the thickener affect the final painting of the piece?
No. The thickener does not alter the compatibility of latex with pigments or with specific latex paints. Once the piece is dry, you can paint it normally using, for example, Mask Paint by Monster Makers, which is specially formulated to adhere to latex surfaces.
How is the latex and thickener mixture stored?
Store the mixture in an airtight container, in a cool place away from direct sunlight. Ammonia-based latex can form a surface film if left exposed to air for a long time. It is recommended to prepare only the amount you are going to use in each working session.
Is it compatible with anatomical armatures for masks?
Yes. Latex thickened with this additive is ideal for working over anatomical armatures such as the ED HEAD H2.0 or the ALANNA HEAD H2.0, as it allows uniform layers to be built up on vertical and curved surfaces without the material dripping.
