What it's used for

Flex Gloss is designed to give the professional finishing touch to special effects and FX makeup pieces that require a glossy, flexible finish. It is the go-to workshop finish for any piece that needs to withstand movement without cracking.

  • High-gloss final finish on character and Halloween latex masks
  • Coating for latex foam prosthetics for film and theatre special effects
  • Finish for polyurethane foam figures and pieces requiring flexibility
  • Pigmented finish coat: mixed with water-based pigments or latex paints to unify colour and gloss in a single layer
  • Protective coating that extends the life of the piece against wear and handling

How to use it

  1. Make sure the latex or foam piece is clean, dry and free of dust, grease or Release agent residue.
  2. If you want to pigment it, mix Flex Gloss with water-based latex paints in the required ratio to achieve the desired tone. Stir well until you get a uniform colour.
  3. For greater fluidity or a more intense gloss, dilute slightly with water. Add water gradually and mix until you reach the right consistency.
  4. Apply Flex Gloss with a soft brush, foam brush or airbrush over the surface of the piece.
  5. Allow to dry completely between coats. For greater depth of gloss, apply 2–3 thin coats rather than a single thick coat.
  6. Once the final coat is dry, the piece is ready for use or storage.

Usage tips

Thin coats for best results

Always apply thin, even coats. Thick coats can cause bubbles, white spots when drying or uneven gloss. If you need a very high gloss, it is better to apply three thin coats than a single heavy one. Allow each coat to dry properly — typically 15 to 30 minutes depending on ambient temperature — before adding the next.

Pigmentation and finish customisation

Flex Gloss is compatible with any water-based paint or pigment, including RD-407 range latex paints. If you need a glossy but solid-colour finish, mix in a separate container before applying. Avoid solvent-based pigments or acrylics incompatible with water, as they may break the mixture or cause lumps.

Storage and cleaning

As a water-based product, tools can be cleaned with water before the product dries. Close the container tightly after each use to prevent a skin forming on the surface. Store in a cool place, away from freezing temperatures: sub-zero temperatures can irreversibly damage the product. Once opened, use within a reasonable time to ensure optimum performance.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be applied over any type of latex?

Flex Gloss is formulated to adhere correctly to natural latex and latex foam. It works especially well with mask and prosthetic latex ranges. If you have doubts about a specific latex, always carry out a test on a small area before applying to the whole piece.

What is the difference between applying it neat or diluted with water?

Applied neat, Flex Gloss gives maximum gloss and a denser coat. Diluted with water, it spreads more easily, penetrates porous surfaces better and can achieve a more even finish with equally high gloss. Dilution is also useful when applying with an airbrush to prevent blockages.

Can it be used as a base coat before painting the piece?

That is not its primary purpose. Flex Gloss is intended as a final finish coat. To paint the piece in detail, apply the colours first with water-based paints and then use Flex Gloss as a sealant and gloss finish on top.

Does it yellow over time or with exposure to light?

No. One of the advantages of Flex Gloss over other coatings is precisely its non-yellowing formulation, making it ideal for display pieces or items in regular use that are stored for periods between uses.

Is it suitable for applying directly onto skin?

No. Flex Gloss is a coating for workshop materials (latex, foam). For FX makeup applications on human skin, use products specifically formulated and tested for dermal contact, such as the PROTAC adhesive.

How can the product be removed from a piece if the result is unsatisfactory?

While still wet, water and a cloth are sufficient. Once dry and cured, mechanical removal may damage the piece. In some cases, Isopropyl Myristate can help soften the coat for easier removal without damaging the substrate.

How many coats are needed for a good finish?

Two thin, well-dried coats already give a very satisfactory glossy finish. If a very intense gloss is required or the piece has a particularly porous surface, up to three coats may be needed. Never apply a single thick coat.

Is it compatible with flexible polyurethane foams?

Yes. Flex Gloss retains its flexibility over polyurethane foams, making it suitable for pieces that bend or compress during use, such as character heads or foam suits. Always check adhesion on the specific substrate before applying to the whole piece.
