RD-407 Masking Latex Flesh Tone is an extremely high-quality casting latex formulated specifically for use in plaster moulds. This is the original formula with over 50 years of history, made from air-drying natural latex, and comes pre-coloured in a medium flesh tone (Caucasian) that reduces the time and cost of subsequent pigmentation. Ideal for the production of masks, props and prosthetics on a mould.

What it is used for

RD-407 Flesh Tone is the industry standard for the production of latex masks in plaster moulds. Its pre-coloured formula and rapid skin build-up make it especially efficient in productions where time and finish quality matter.

  • Production of full and half latex masks in plaster moulds
  • Construction of soft and articulated props for film, theatre and events
  • FX prosthetics made in a mould (do not apply directly to bare skin)
  • Characters and creatures for special effects and professional character design
  • Flexible decorative pieces with high detail reproduction
  • High-volume Halloween mask production and artistic character design

How to use it

  1. Prepare the plaster mould making sure it is completely dry and clean. There is no need to apply a release agent to plaster moulds.
  2. Gently shake the RD-407 container before use to homogenise the material without creating bubbles.
  3. Pour the latex directly into the mould until full, or apply it with a brush in successive layers for greater thickness control.
  4. Allow the latex to rest in the mould for the time needed to form the first skin layer (the plaster absorbs water from the latex, accelerating the process).
  5. If using the casting technique, pour the excess latex back into the container once the desired layer has formed.
  6. Add additional layers if greater thickness is needed, allowing each layer to dry slightly before applying the next.
  7. Leave to air dry completely until the latex takes on a uniform colour with no translucent areas.
  8. Demould carefully, pulling gently from the edges inward.
  9. Paint the piece with latex-specific paints to achieve the final finish. For a glossy finish, apply Flex Gloss as a final coating.
Important: RD-407 contains natural latex and an ammonia source. It is not suitable for direct application on human skin in liquid or semi-cured state. It may only be in contact with skin once fully cured and dry. Always work in a well-ventilated space and wear gloves and eye protection during handling. People with latex allergies must avoid contact with this product.

Usage tips

The plaster mould — key to the result

RD-407 is formulated to work exclusively with plaster moulds. The natural porosity of plaster absorbs the water from the latex and facilitates rapid skin formation. Use a quality moulding plaster or, if you need greater mould resistance, the Arquero high-strength plaster. A wet or poorly dried mould will slow down the process and can cause surface defects.

Thickness control by layers

For pieces that require more strength or body (heavy-use masks, props that undergo handling), work in multiple layers rather than a single thick casting. Allow each layer to lose its surface sheen before applying the next. This improves adhesion between layers and gives a more uniform and durable result.

Storage and preservation

Store RD-407 at room temperature, away from extreme cold. Low temperatures can destabilise the latex and cause irreversible coagulation. Do not freeze the product. Close the container tightly after each use to prevent the formation of a dry film on the surface. If a thin surface layer appears, remove it carefully before using the latex underneath, which will still be in perfect condition.

Frequently asked questions

Does mask latex require vulcanisation or any additional process?

No. RD-407 comes pre-vulcanised from the factory. It only needs to air dry to cure. It does not require an oven, catalyst or any additional treatment.

Can I use this latex in silicone or polyurethane moulds?

RD-407 is formulated specifically for plaster moulds. Plaster absorbs the water from the latex and allows skin formation. In non-porous moulds such as silicone or polyurethane, the curing process is much slower and results are unpredictable. For best results, always work with plaster moulds.

How long does each layer take to dry?

It depends on the layer thickness, temperature and ambient humidity. Under normal conditions (20–25 °C, moderate humidity), a thin layer may lose its surface sheen in 20–40 minutes. Full drying of a finished piece can take several hours. Do not force demoulding if the latex still shows translucent or wet areas.

What paints can be used to paint the latex once cured?

Monster Makers Mask Paint is the ideal paint for RD-407: it is formulated specifically to adhere to latex and maintain flexibility without cracking. Avoid rigid acrylic paints not specifically designed for latex, as they can peel with use.

Can this latex be applied directly to skin?

No. RD-407 is not suitable for direct application to human skin in liquid or semi-cured state. It contains natural latex and ammonia. It may only be in contact with skin once fully cured. For effects directly on skin, consult products specifically formulated for dermal use.

What is the difference between the Flesh Tone and the Halloween White version?

The only difference is the starting colour. The RD-407 Halloween White comes in white, which makes it easy to pigment to any tone. The Flesh Tone comes pre-coloured in a medium Caucasian flesh tone, saving time and paint material when the final finish is human skin or similar.

How do you store latex without it going bad?

Store it at room temperature (between 10 and 30 °C), away from extreme cold and direct heat. Never freeze it: cold coagulates latex irreversibly. Close the container tightly after each use and, if a thin dry film forms on the surface, remove it carefully before using the product.

Do I need to apply a release agent to the plaster mould?

Generally not. One of RD-407's strengths is that it demoulds well from plaster without the need for release agents. With very new or very absorbent moulds, it can be useful to let the mould accumulate a few "seasoning" castings before achieving perfect demoulding results.
