What it's used for

This kit is designed for direct body casting on skin. The alginate captures detail with precision and demoulding is clean and safe. Escayola Arquero provides durable, high-definition casts. It is ideal for:

  • Hand and foot molds of adults, babies and children as keepsakes
  • Decorative pieces and body sculptures
  • Prosthetics and special effects in FX makeup (initial shape capture)
  • Educational projects and art workshops
  • Orthopaedics and anatomy studies
  • Full face molds (LifeCast) combined with plaster bandages as a support shell

How to use it

  1. Prepare the workspace. Protect the work surface. Remove jewellery and apply petroleum jelly or vegetable oil to any hairy areas you plan to mold, to make demoulding easier.
  2. Mix the alginate. Add 3 parts cold water to 1 part Alga-Cast Slow powder by volume. Stir vigorously for 30–45 seconds until you obtain a smooth, lump-free paste.
  3. Apply the alginate. Place the hand or foot into the container with the mix, or apply directly to the area being molded. Hold the position without moving until fully set (9–11 minutes).
  4. Demould carefully. Remove the body part with gentle, twisting movements. The mold will be hollow and ready for casting.
  5. Cast Escayola Arquero. Mix the plaster with water following the ratios indicated on the data sheet. Pour slowly into the alginate mold and tap the container gently to eliminate bubbles.
  6. Wait for it to set. Allow the plaster to set until completely solid (minimum 30–45 minutes before demoulding).
  7. Demould the cast. Carefully remove or break away the alginate. Your plaster cast is ready. Leave to dry for 24–48 hours for maximum hardness.

Usage tips

Cold water for a longer working time

Water temperature directly affects the alginate's setting time. Use cold (not icy) water to extend the working time and handle the mix more comfortably, especially if it's your first time. Warmer water speeds up the process. Alga-Cast Slow is already formulated to provide a generous 9–11 minute window, which is sufficient for most body casting applications.

Use the mold immediately

Alginate is a temporary molding material. Once set, it begins to lose water and shrink. Cast the plaster as soon as you have demoulded the body part. If you need to wait a few minutes, wrap the mold in a damp cloth to slow down dehydration. Never leave an alginate mold unused for more than one or two hours.

For multiple uses, use platinum silicone

An alginate mold is intended for a maximum of 1 or 2 castings. If you need multiple copies from the same original, alginate is not the right tool. In that case, consider making the mold with a body-safe platinum silicone, which offers durability, elasticity and unlimited reproductions from the same mold.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to use this material directly on skin?

Yes. Alga-Cast Slow alginate and Escayola Arquero are 100% non-toxic materials with no harmful or irritating components. Alginate is commonly used in dentistry and professional body casting. Suitable for adults, children and babies, always following the usage instructions.

How many copies can I get from an alginate mold?

Alginate is a temporary mold material. With Alga-Cast Slow you can obtain between 1 and 2 plaster casts before the mold deteriorates. If you need more reproductions, alginate is not the right solution — consider using a body-safe platinum silicone instead.

What do I do if the alginate sets before I finish applying it?

Use colder water to slow down the setting. Alga-Cast Slow has a working time of 9–11 minutes with water at room temperature, which is usually sufficient. If the environment is very warm, chill the water beforehand. If you need even more time, there is also the Alga-Cast Fast version with different curing times, or simply lower the water temperature further.

Can I use a different material instead of plaster for the cast?

Yes. An alginate mold is compatible with plaster, low-exotherm casting resins and other casting materials. The Escayola Arquero included in the kit is a high-strength option, but you can also try Escayola Aladur if you are looking for greater detail definition.

Does the alginate leave residue or stains on the skin?

No. Alga-Cast Slow alginate does not leave toxic residue or stain the skin. It is a water-based material that comes off cleanly. In areas with heavy body hair, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly or vegetable oil before molding to make demoulding easier and avoid pulling.

How much material is needed for a full hand mold?

The 500 g of Alga-Cast Slow included in the kit is enough to make one or two complete adult hand molds, depending on hand size and container depth. For feet or larger body parts, additional alginate may need to be purchased separately.

Can I use this kit for face molds?

Alga-Cast Slow alginate is suitable for facial casting. For a full face mold, plaster bandages must be used as a support shell over the alginate, as the mold alone is not rigid enough to hold its shape. Plaster bandages are not included in this kit and must be purchased separately.

Does Escayola Arquero need a release agent?

When casting plaster inside an alginate mold, no release agent is needed because alginate does not bond to plaster. If you ever need to make plaster-on-plaster copies, apply release wax between both surfaces to prevent them from sticking.
