What it's used for

This palette is designed for special effects makeup artists and FX artists who need high-performance colours on set. Whether you're working on silicone prosthetics or directly on an actor's skin, the alcohol-activated pigments offer fast coverage, easy blending and resistance to sweat and movement. Fleck Green is specially formulated for use on hair as well as skin.

  • Theatrical and cinematic character makeup for clown, villain or fantasy characters
  • Painting on platinum silicone and latex prosthetics
  • Direct application on skin for full-body SFX makeup
  • Colouring wigs and hair with Fleck Green
  • Blending shades to create custom colours alongside other Skin Illustrator palettes
  • Quick on-set touch-ups thanks to the compact format and instant activation

How to use it

  1. Make sure the surface (skin, silicone or latex) is clean, dry and free of oils and grease.
  2. Dampen the brush or wand with Skin Illustrator Activator, Skin Illustrator Slow Activator or 99% isopropyl alcohol. Never use 70% alcohol, acetone, MEK or water.
  3. Pick up the desired colour pigment with the dampened brush and apply it to the surface using smooth, controlled strokes.
  4. Allow to dry for a few seconds. The colour sets as the alcohol evaporates — no heat dryer needed.
  5. For greater intensity or opaque coverage, apply a second coat once the first is dry.
  6. Blend colours directly on the palette or on the surface to achieve intermediate shades or gradient effects.
  7. For the final finish on prosthetics, seal with translucent powder or an alcohol-based sealer depending on the desired effect.

Tips and advice

Correct pigment activation

The key to a clean result lies in the amount of activator used. A brush that is too wet will dilute the pigment and reduce coverage; too dry and the colour won't activate. Shake off any excess alcohol before picking up the pigment. Jack White, having a higher pigment load, may require slightly more activator to achieve a consistent pickup.

Blending with other Skin Illustrator palettes

The Killer Comedian colours are fully compatible with the rest of the Skin Illustrator range. If you need a base flesh tone before applying the palette colours, work first with the Flesh Tone Palette or the Complexion Palette. For wound and bruise effects, combine it with the FX Palette.

Storage and cleaning

Close the palette after each use to prevent ambient alcohol from drying out the pigments. Clean brushes with 99% alcohol between colours to avoid cross-contamination of shades. Store the palette in a cool place away from heat sources. If the pigment surface hardens after repeated use, simply moisten lightly with activator to restore the texture.

Frequently asked questions

What activator should I use for this type of alcohol-activated makeup?

You should use Skin Illustrator Activator, Skin Illustrator Slow Activator or 99% isopropyl alcohol. The Slow Activator extends working time, which is useful for blending or large-surface applications. Never use 70% alcohol, water, acetone or MEK, as they do not activate the pigment correctly and may damage the formulation.

Can it be used on sensitive skin or near the eye area?

Killer Comedian On Set is formulated for use on skin, but we recommend always performing a patch test 24 hours in advance on sensitive skin. For periorbital or mucosal areas, consult the product safety data sheet and consider formulations specifically designed for those areas. In professional productions, the makeup artist should be aware of the actor's allergy history.

Does it work the same on silicone as on natural skin?

Yes, Skin Illustrator alcohol-activated makeups are designed to adhere to platinum silicone surfaces as well as skin and latex. On silicone, adhesion is particularly good because the alcohol slightly penetrates the porous surface of the material. Make sure the prosthetic is clean and free of any Release agent residue before applying colour.

How do you remove alcohol-activated makeup from skin?

Alcohol-activated makeup is easily removed with a dedicated alcohol makeup remover or with baby oil applied with cotton wool. Avoid rubbing hard on silicone or latex prosthetics, as this may damage the material. First clean the area with the remover, then wash with water and mild soap.

Can the colours be mixed together?

Yes, all colours in the palette are miscible with each other and with any other shade in the Skin Illustrator range. You can blend directly on the palette with the dampened brush, or apply successive layers on the surface to create gradients and depth effects.

What makes Jack White special compared to other whites?

Jack White has a higher pigment load than standard whites in the range, allowing opaque coverage to be achieved with fewer coats. It's ideal for white clown bases or for highlighting areas of a character makeup without needing multiple passes.

Can Fleck Green really be used on hair?

Yes, Fleck Green has been specifically formulated to be safe on both skin and hair. It is one of the special colours in this palette that allows you to unify a character look across the prosthetic, skin and the actor's hair without switching products.

How long does the makeup last on set with sweat and movement?

The "On Set" version is optimised for durability under shooting conditions. Once the alcohol has set, the colour holds up well against moderate sweat and movement. For long sessions or extreme heat conditions, apply an alcohol-based sealer over the finished look and keep activator on hand for spot touch-ups.
