What it is used for

Monster Clay Gray Soft is designed for professionals and semi-professionals who need a reliable modelling material that is easy to work with and directly compatible with platinum silicone moulding processes. Its neutral grey colour makes it easy to read textures and details under any studio lighting, making it a solid reference when the level of finish matters.

  • Figurative and character sculpture for special effects and film
  • Prototyping of parts with a high level of surface detail
  • Creation of masters for platinum silicone moulds
  • Correction and retouching in Life Casting processes
  • Modelling of large pieces such as full heads and busts
  • Production of custom workshop tools and texturing pieces

How to use it

  1. Soften the material: heat the required amount in the original container in the microwave at short intervals (10–15 seconds) or in an oven without exceeding 250 °C. The material becomes soft and workable quickly.
  2. Model by hand or with tools: work the soft clay with your fingers or with modelling tools to build up volumes and define the general shape of the piece.
  3. Refine the details: as the material cools it regains firmness, allowing you to work fine details with pointed tools without distorting areas already defined.
  4. Correct with localised heat: use a hot air dryer to soften specific areas and retouch without affecting the rest of the sculpture.
  5. Prepare the master for moulding: once the sculpture is finished, you can cast platinum silicone directly over it without any prior sealing, thanks to its sulfur-free formulation.
  6. Demould and reuse: after demoulding, collect the leftover clay, melt it again and store it in the original container for next use.

Usage tips

Temperature control for different working phases

The Soft hardness is ideal if you work in cool environments or if the modelling involves long sessions where the material needs to remain workable. If you need more firmness for very fine details, briefly cool the piece before working on that area. For large pieces such as full heads or busts, melt the material in the container and pour it over an internal base or Armature to save modelling time.

Preparing the master before casting silicone

Although Monster Clay Gray Soft is compatible with platinum silicones due to being sulfur-free, make sure that tools, hands and any other element that comes into contact with the silicone are also free of potential inhibitors. If the sculpture includes inserts of other materials (wires, foams, etc.), seal those areas before casting. To clean clay residue from tools or surfaces, Isopropyl Myristate is an effective and gentle option.

Storage and reuse

One of the greatest advantages of Monster Clay is that it does not dry out or harden irreversibly. Store leftover material in its original container, tightly closed and away from direct heat sources. If the material has been stored for a while and has accumulated some dirt, melt it, filter out the impurities and reuse it without issue. The material does not expire as long as it is kept clean.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the available hardnesses of this type of professional modelling clay?

The Soft, Medium and Hard versions differ in firmness at room temperature. The Soft version like Monster Clay Gray Soft is easier to work with from the start, ideal for quick modelling, large pieces or long sessions. Harder versions allow greater definition of fine details but require more heat to soften. For comparison, also check Chavant Medium or Chavant Hard.

Can platinum silicone be cast directly over it without any prior preparation?

Yes. Monster Clay Gray Soft is sulfur-free, so it does not inhibit the curing of platinum silicones. You can cast directly over the sculpture without the need for a sealer or barrier coat. Also make sure that the rest of the assembly elements (Armature, tools, gloves) are also free of inhibitors.

What materials can inhibit the curing of a platinum silicone?

Platinum silicones are sensitive to inhibition through contact with: clays containing sulfur, latex, petroleum jelly, uncured epoxy, freshly cast polyester, urethane rubbers and some metals or unsealed surfaces. Monster Clay Gray Soft contains no sulfur, making it a safe choice for these types of processes.

How much material is needed to model a full head with neck and part of the bust?

For a full head with neck and shoulders, a 2.05 kg container is usually sufficient if working over an internal Armature (foam skull, wire base, etc.). If the piece is solid or of large volume, consider combining several containers. Monster Clay Gray Soft is especially well suited for pieces of this size thanks to its fluidity when warm, which allows volumes to be filled quickly.

Can the professional modelling clay be reused after silicone has been cast over it?

Yes. Once the silicone has been demoulded, you can recover the clay, melt it and reuse it. If there are silicone residues stuck to it, remove them manually before melting. The material does not lose its properties through use cycles.

At what temperature is it worked and how is it heated safely?

The container is microwave-safe and withstands up to 250 °C in an oven. For normal use, heat in the microwave at 10–15 second intervals until the desired consistency is achieved. There is no need to reach full melt: it is enough for the outer layer to be soft to start working. Avoid overheating, as the material may lose some detail if it becomes too fluid.

Is it suitable for use in special effects workshops and FX prosthetics?

Yes. Monster Clay Gray Soft is commonly used in FX workshops to create prosthetic masters and character effects. Its compatibility with platinum silicones makes it essential in workflows where the master will be moulded directly. For complete FX prosthetics projects you will also need specific platinum silicones, encapsulants and adhesives from the Feroca catalogue.

How do you clean clay from tools and work surfaces?

Clay residue on tools and surfaces is easily removed with heat (hair dryer or hot water) and a cloth. For more thorough cleaning or to remove traces in delicate areas, Isopropyl Myristate works as a gentle solvent without damaging surfaces or tools.
