Concentrated softening agent for uncured CosClay. Reconstitutes hardened clay. 30 ml bottle. Dose: ~5 ml per 225 g.

The CosClay Softening Agent is a concentrated conditioner formulated specifically to soften and reconstitute uncured CosClay that has hardened or lost plasticity. Just a few drops are enough to restore optimal working texture, extending the material's shelf life and reducing waste in the studio.

What it's used for

This softening agent is designed for sculptors, figure makers, cosplayers and artists who regularly work with CosClay polymer clay. Its primary use is the recovery of clay that has hardened during storage, but it is also useful for adjusting the consistency of new batches that are too firm for the project at hand.

  • Reconstituting blocks of CosClay that have hardened through prolonged storage.
  • Softening clay that is too firm before sculpting fine details.
  • Adjusting plasticity when mixing different hardnesses of CosClay.
  • Recovering uncured clay scraps and offcuts for reuse.
  • Facilitating pasta machine lamination when the clay is very stiff.
  • Unifying the texture of partially dried pieces before continuing to sculpt.

How to use it

  1. Break the uncured CosClay block into small 1–2 cm pieces to maximise contact surface area.
  2. Add a few drops of the softening agent directly onto the pieces. For very hardened blocks, use approximately 5 ml per 225 g of clay.
  3. Knead by hand for several minutes, distributing the agent evenly throughout the mass.
  4. Leave the clay to rest for 10 minutes wrapped in plastic film so the agent is fully absorbed.
  5. Knead again until the desired consistency is reached. If the clay is still too firm, repeat the process with a few additional drops.
  6. If the clay feels tacky after application, wait up to 24 hours before sculpting, or knead a little more to redistribute the agent.
  7. Once optimal plasticity is achieved, work the clay as normal and cure it in the oven according to CosClay's instructions.

Usage tips

Dosage: less is more

The Softening Agent is highly concentrated. Always start with less than you think you need: it is much easier to add more agent than to correct clay that has become too soft. If you overdo it, you can compensate by blending in fresh untreated clay or leaving the mass to rest for several hours to allow some of the agent to evaporate.

Kneading consistency

The most common mistake when using this product is not kneading for long enough. If the agent is not well distributed, you will end up with areas of different hardness within the same block. Work the clay in layers: flatten, fold and knead repeatedly as if it were bread dough. The smaller the initial pieces, the faster and more even the absorption.

Preventive storage

To reduce the need for the softening agent, always store uncured CosClay in airtight bags or wrapped in plastic film, away from heat and direct light. Proper storage can extend the material's shelf life by several years without any loss of plasticity. The Softening Agent is the solution once the damage is already done, but prevention is always more efficient.

Frequently asked questions

Does this softening agent work with any polymer clay?

No. The CosClay Softening Agent is formulated specifically for uncured CosClay. It is not intended for other polymer clays such as Super Sculpey Beige or Super Sculpey Firm Gray, and using it on incompatible materials may alter the product's properties without guaranteeing results. For other clays, consult the respective manufacturer.

Can it be used on clay that has already been oven-cured?

No. The CosClay Softening Agent only works on uncured CosClay. Once the clay has gone through the oven and the cure is complete, its chemical structure is permanent and the softening agent will have no effect on it.

How long does the softening agent take to work?

After applying it and kneading, leave the clay to rest for at least 10 minutes wrapped in film so the agent is absorbed. With very hardened blocks, it may be advisable to wait longer or repeat the process. Any residual tackiness that appears will disappear within a maximum of 24 hours.

Does it affect the colour or final properties of the cured clay?

When used at the recommended dose (~5 ml per 225 g), the CosClay Softening Agent does not significantly alter the colour or mechanical properties of the clay once cured. Excess agent may make the finished piece slightly softer or tackier, so it is advisable to respect the indicated dosage.

Can I mix treated clay with untreated clay?

Yes. You can freely mix CosClay treated with the Softening Agent with untreated CosClay. In fact, this is a good strategy for adjusting the overall hardness of your working batch when some of the material has hardened and some still retains its original plasticity.

What do I do if the clay becomes too soft after applying the agent?

If you have used too much, blend the treated clay with fresh CosClay without softener to compensate. You can also leave the mass unwrapped at room temperature for a few hours so that some of the agent evaporates. Avoid adding more agent until you have assessed the final consistency after resting.

Is the 30 ml bottle enough for continuous professional use?

Given that the recommended dose is ~5 ml per 225 g of clay, a 30 ml bottle allows you to treat approximately 1.35 kg of hardened clay. For studios with high CosClay consumption, it may be advisable to keep several bottles in stock. Remember that proper clay storage considerably reduces the need to use the softener.

Is there a risk that the softening agent could inhibit silicones if I use treated CosClay as an original for mould making?

CosClay clay itself may interact with addition-cure silicones (platinum) depending on its formulation. If you plan to use a piece sculpted in CosClay as an original for a platinum silicone mould, always carry out a cure test on a small area before proceeding. The Softening Agent does not add sulphur to the formula, but compatibility with your specific moulding system must be verified on a case-by-case basis.
