What it's used for
Dark Prussian Blue is a deep, cold dark blue that appears across a huge variety of historical uniforms, military vehicles and fantasy figures. Its versatility makes it essential for many different projects:
- Prussian and Napoleonic uniforms on historical scale figures.
- Base coat or shadow colour for blue tones on wargame miniatures (infantry, cavalry, fantasy characters).
- Jackets, helmets and naval equipment on ship and submarine models.
- Shading and blending on tanks and modern military vehicles with a dark blue finish.
- Fabric details, oxidised metals and deep shadows in dioramas.
- Base coat for cosplay projects or prop pieces requiring an intense, opaque blue.
- Depth effects in SFX and character make-up projects.
How to use it
- Surface preparation: Apply a suitable primer before painting. For a purer, more opaque Dark Prussian Blue, use a dark grey or black primer.
- Thinning: For brush work, you can apply it straight from the bottle or thin it slightly with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner (a guide ratio of 1:1 to 2:1 paint/thinner). For airbrush, aim for a consistency similar to skimmed milk and adjust according to your working pressure (15–20 PSI as a reference).
- Application: Apply in thin, successive coats. The high pigmentation of the Standard range delivers fast coverage — don't try to force opacity with a single thick layer.
- Drying: Touch-dry in 15–20 minutes under normal conditions (20 °C, moderate humidity). Allow to dry completely before applying additional coats, washes or varnishes.
- Clean-up: Clean brushes and airbrush with water while the paint is still wet. If it has dried, use AK Interactive acrylic thinner for more effective cleaning.
- Sealing: Once the piece is finished, apply the appropriate AK Interactive varnish for your desired finish (matte, satin or gloss) to protect your work.
Usage tips
Shake well before use
Highly pigmented acrylic paints tend to settle over time. Shake the bottle for at least 30 seconds before opening, or use an agitator ball if you have one available. A well-mixed paint makes a noticeable difference to colour consistency.
Dark Prussian Blue as a base for gradients
The deep, cold tone of Dark Prussian Blue makes it ideal as a shadow colour or base in zenithal, OSL (Object Source Lighting) or highlight layering techniques. Starting from it, add white or lighter blue colours to build the gradient towards the illuminated areas of your miniature or model.
Mixing and colour modulation
Being a water-based paint from the Standard range, it mixes seamlessly with all other colours in the same AK Interactive range. To warm the tone and obtain greener or more muted blues — useful for worn uniforms or cold metals — try mixing in small amounts of dark green or cold grey colours from the same range.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be used in an airbrush without thinning?
It is not recommended. Dark Prussian Blue, like the rest of the AK Interactive Standard range paints, has a consistency designed for brush application. For airbrush use, it should be thinned with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner to achieve a fluid texture similar to skimmed milk, in order to prevent clogging and obtain an even finish.
How many coats do I need for opaque coverage?
Thanks to the high pigmentation of the Standard range, in most cases two thin coats over a dark primer are sufficient to achieve solid coverage with Dark Prussian Blue. Over light surfaces a third coat may be needed. It is always better to apply several thin coats rather than a single thick one.
Is it compatible with washes and filters applied over this paint?
Yes, but it is recommended to apply a coat of satin or gloss AK Interactive varnish before using solvent-based washes, in order to protect the Dark Prussian Blue layer and make it easier to remove the excess without damaging the base colour. Water-based acrylic washes can be applied directly over dry acrylic without the need for a prior varnish coat.
How do I store the paint to prevent it from drying out?
Store the bottle tightly closed, upright and away from heat sources and direct light. If the dropper cap has any paint residue on it, clean it before closing to ensure a proper seal. Under normal storage conditions, AK Interactive acrylic paints have a long shelf life, although it is recommended to use them within a reasonable time once opened.
What types of surfaces is it suitable for?
Dark Prussian Blue adheres correctly to plastic, resin, white metal and 3D-printed surfaces, provided a suitable primer has been applied beforehand. It can also be used on wood, cardboard and foam surfaces in diorama, cosplay or environmental modelling projects.
