What it is used for
Oxford is a versatile colour within the Standard range that suits a wide variety of projects. Its tone is especially useful in applications where a deep, dark blue with good coverage is required, from military uniforms to scenery elements.
- Scale model painting of vehicles, aircraft and military figures
- Wargame miniatures: uniforms, equipment and troop details
- Dioramas and scenery: urban surfaces, doors, signage
- Fantasy and science fiction figures
- Cosplay projects: painting 3D-printed or resin parts
- SFX effects and small-scale artistic characterisation
How to use it
- Surface preparation: apply a suitable primer over the clean, dry piece. For smooth surfaces or resin, a coat of primer ensures better adhesion.
- Paint preparation: shake the pot well before opening. If the paint is too thick, add a few drops of distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner until you reach the desired consistency.
- Brush application: apply in thin, even coats. Allow to dry between coats (15–20 minutes) for better coverage and to avoid build-up.
- Airbrush application: thin to 50–70% with AK Interactive acrylic thinner. Recommended pressure between 15 and 20 psi. Clean the airbrush immediately after use.
- Drying: touch-dry in 15–20 minutes; fully cured in 24 hours. Avoid handling the piece before it is fully cured if you plan to apply additional coats or varnishes.
- Cleaning: clean brushes and airbrush with soap and water while the paint is still wet. Once dry, use acrylic solvent.
Usage tips
Thinning by technique
For drybrushing or base coats, work with the paint lightly thinned (5–10% water). For washes or glazes, increase the dilution gradually. With an airbrush, a dilution of 50–60% with AK Interactive acrylic thinner usually gives optimal results without losing pigmentation.
Mixing with other Standard range colours
Oxford mixes without any issues with the rest of the AK Interactive Standard range colours. You can lighten it with lighter tones from the same range to create highlights, or darken it with black to build shadows, always keeping the same water-based acrylic base.
Pot storage
Close the pot tightly after each use and store it upright, away from direct heat sources. If the paint thickens over time, add a few drops of distilled water and shake well before use. A well-stored pot can last for years in perfect condition.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to thin the paint before using it?
It depends on the technique. Oxford can be applied straight from the pot with a brush for base coats, but for airbrush use or glazing it is advisable to thin it with distilled water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner. A good general rule is to start with minimal thinning and adjust until you achieve the desired fluidity.
Can I apply it on any surface?
AK Interactive Oxford adheres well to plastic, resin, metal and wood, provided the surface is clean, degreased and primed appropriately. Without primer, adhesion may be compromised, especially on very smooth or metallic surfaces.
What finish does this paint give?
The AK Interactive Standard range offers a finish that can range from satin to matt depending on the specific colour. To unify the finish of your project and protect the work, it is recommended to apply an AK Interactive varnish at the end of the process.
Is it compatible with an airbrush?
Yes. Oxford is formulated for use with both brush and airbrush. For airbrush, thin it to 50–70% with AK Interactive acrylic thinner and work at a pressure of between 15 and 20 psi. Always clean the airbrush with water and acrylic solvent immediately after use.
Where can I buy this paint in Spain?
You can purchase Oxford AK11188 directly from Feroca, the official AK Interactive distributor in Spain. Through Feroca you have access to the entire Standard range and the rest of the AK Interactive catalogue with a guarantee of original product.
Is it safe to use indoors?
Yes. Being a water-based acrylic paint, Oxford has very low toxicity compared to solvent-based products. Even so, it is recommended to work in a well-ventilated space, especially when using an airbrush.
