What it is used for
Light Prussian Blue is a highly versatile color, especially suited for historical and fantasy modelling projects. Its cool, luminous tone works equally well as a base color or in highlight and gradient layers:
- Infantry and cavalry uniforms from the Napoleonic and Prussian eras on scale figures and wargame miniatures.
- Aircraft components, naval equipment, and military helmets where a desaturated blue with presence is required.
- Base or highlight layer on fantasy armor and Warhammer miniatures and other miniature games.
- Cosplay finishes for armor pieces, helmets, and accessories in primed foam or plastic.
- Lighting effects and zenithal highlighting on dioramas and scale vehicles.
- SFX and stage prop projects where a fast-covering cool blue is needed.
How to use it
- Surface preparation: Make sure the piece is primed and free of grease. A grey or white primer enhances the luminosity of Light Prussian Blue; a black primer darkens it for more dramatic results.
- Shake the bottle: Shake well for at least 30 seconds to homogenize the pigment. The mixing ball inside makes this step easier.
- Thin if necessary: For brush application, use it straight from the bottle or add a drop of water to improve flow. For airbrush, thin with distilled water or AK acrylic thinner until you reach a semi-skimmed milk consistency.
- Application: Apply in thin, even coats. Two coats are usually enough for full coverage. When using an airbrush, work in cross passes at around 15–20 cm distance.
- Drying: Touch-dry is reached in 15–20 minutes under normal conditions. Wait at least 30 minutes before applying a second coat or a wash.
- Cleaning: Clean the brush or airbrush with water and soap while the paint is still wet. If it has already dried, use acrylic thinner.
Usage tips
Make the most of the tone with highlights and shadows
Light Prussian Blue works perfectly as the base coat in a three-tone scheme. Apply it as the mid-tone, add white or a lighter blue from the Standard range for the highlights, and darken with a deeper blue or a dedicated wash for the shadows. The result on historical uniforms and fantasy armor is especially convincing.
Airbrush: consistency is key
When working with an airbrush, over-thinning causes loss of coverage and longer drying times. Always test your dilution on paper before moving on to the piece. The recommended pressure is between 15 and 20 PSI for a 0.3–0.4 mm nozzle.
Compatibility with other AK Interactive products
Light Prussian Blue is fully compatible with the washes, filters, and varnishes in the AK Interactive range. Apply a satin varnish before washes to protect the color layer and make it easier to remove excess wash with a damp cotton swab.
Frequently asked questions
Can it be used straight from the bottle without thinning?
Yes, Light Prussian Blue can be applied directly with a brush without thinning for maximum coverage. For airbrush use, it is advisable to add a little distilled water or acrylic thinner to achieve the right fluidity.
How many coats are needed for good coverage?
In most cases, two thin coats are sufficient over a light primer. On dark surfaces, a third coat or a lighter undercoat may be needed beforehand.
Is it suitable for use on foam or cosplay plastic?
Yes, as long as the surface is properly primed with a flexible acrylic primer or one specifically designed for foam. Because Light Prussian Blue is water-based, it does not attack foam, but without a primer adhesion may be poor.
How long does it take to dry completely?
Touch-dry is reached in 15–20 minutes. To work on top with another coat or apply a wash, it is recommended to wait at least 30 minutes. Full curing can take several hours depending on coat thickness and ambient humidity.
Can I mix it with other paints from the Standard range?
Yes, all paints in the AK Interactive Standard range are intermixable since they share a water-based acrylic formula. You can mix Light Prussian Blue with other colors in the range to create transitions, custom shades, or adjust the tone to your needs.
