Sio-2 stoneware clay for sculpture and modelling with impalpable grog (0–0.2 mm). Excellent plasticity and very high detail. 5 kg container.

Arcilla Sio-2 Gres Zamora is a high-quality stoneware clay formulated for professional sculpture and modelling. Its impalpable grog (0–0.2 mm) allows working with an extraordinary level of detail, and its exceptional plasticity makes it comfortable and precise under the hands. If you need a clay that withstands firing processes while responding well to fine sculptural work, this is your choice.

What it is used for

Arcilla Sio-2 Gres Zamora is designed for sculptors, ceramicists and modellers who need a strong, precise clay suitable for firing. Its fine texture makes it particularly well-suited when detail is the priority, without sacrificing the structural robustness of stoneware.

  • Figurative and portrait sculpture with a high level of detail
  • Modelling of decorative and artistic pieces
  • Creation of ceramic prototypes for kiln firing
  • Work in professional or semi-professional ceramic studios
  • Production of unique pieces or small runs
  • Educational modelling in arts and crafts schools

How to use it

  1. Condition the clay: Take the required amount from the container and knead it with your hands until it reaches a uniform temperature and consistency. If it is too firm, slightly moisten your hands while kneading.
  2. Build the base form: Work by adding volumes or start from a solid block, depending on your preferred technique. Stoneware handles structures with some thickness well.
  3. Refine the detail: Use modelling tools (wooden tools, loop tools, ribs) to define textures and fine details. The impalpable grog allows very clean surfaces.
  4. Maintain moisture: Cover the piece with plastic between sessions to prevent it from drying out and cracking. If surface cracks appear, moisten and smooth with a finger or sponge.
  5. Allow to dry slowly: Once the piece is finished, leave it to air-dry in a draught-free location, gradually. Drying too quickly can cause cracks in pieces of uneven thickness.
  6. Fire in a ceramic kiln: If you are going to fire the piece, make sure it is completely dry before placing it in the kiln. Follow the recommended firing curves for stoneware according to the desired finish (bisque, vitrified, etc.).

Usage tips

Proper storage

Always store the clay tightly sealed in its original container or in an airtight plastic bag. Stoneware loses moisture easily and dried-out clay is difficult to restore to optimal working condition. If it has lost some moisture, you can try to rehydrate it by wrapping it in a damp cloth for several hours before use.

Joining pieces and additions

To join two pieces of Gres Zamora clay, score both surfaces with a loop tool, apply slip (clay dissolved in water to a creamy consistency) and press firmly together. Never join dry clay with wet clay: the difference in shrinkage will cause cracks during drying.

Working in layers and textures

The impalpable grog allows very fine textures to be stamped directly onto the surface. You can use fabrics, natural leaves, silicone stamps or any textured material. If you want very smooth, polished surfaces, work with a damp sponge in the final stages of modelling before drying.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between stoneware and other modelling clays?

Stoneware is a high-temperature firing clay that, once fired, is very strong and has low porosity. Unlike more plastic low-fire clays, stoneware provides greater structural robustness to finished pieces. Arcilla Sio-2 Gres Zamora combines that strength with an impalpable grog that allows a level of detail typical of finer clay bodies.

Can it be used unfired, just as a dry piece?

Yes, you can leave pieces unfired if you are only looking for a decorative result or a prototype. Bear in mind that raw or bisque-fired unglazed pieces are fragile and porous. For pieces that require durability, firing in a ceramic kiln is essential.

At what temperature is this type of stoneware fired?

Stoneware is typically fired between 1220 °C and 1280 °C, although the exact range depends on the specific formulation and the result you are looking for. Always consult the manufacturer's instructions and carry out prior tests with samples before firing definitive pieces.

What should I do if the clay has partially dried out?

If the clay has lost moisture but is not completely dry, wrap it in a damp cloth and seal it in a plastic bag for several hours or overnight. If it is very dry, you can break it into pieces, add water and let it absorb slowly, then knead until the right consistency is restored.

Is it suitable for use with children or in educational settings?

Arcilla Sio-2 Gres Zamora is a natural clay without aggressive chemical additives, suitable for use in educational workshops and ceramics schools. In environments with minors, always ensure that kiln handling is supervised by adults.

Can it be painted or decorated before firing?

Yes. You can apply slips, oxides or ceramic colourants to the piece at leather-hard (semi-dry) stage or at bisque stage before glaze firing. For unfired finishes, you can also paint with acrylics or water-based paints once the piece is completely dry.

How does it differ from other Sio-2 clays in the catalogue?

Within the Feroca catalogue you will find other Sio-2 clays with different formulations: Arcilla Sio-2 PLUS Blanca and Arcilla Sio-2 ARGILA Blanca are designed for white-coloured finishes and work where the final colour of the clay body matters. Gres Zamora stands out for its high plasticity and impalpable grog, ideal when sculptural detail is the priority.
