Acrystal Finition is a solvent-free satin acrylic varnish formulated specifically to protect and finish pieces made with acrylic resins. Its non-toxic and practically odourless formula makes it comfortable to use in the workshop without the need for forced ventilation, and its versatility also allows it to be used as a base for decorative patinas by mixing it with acrylic pigments or mineral fillers.

What it is used for

Acrystal Finition is designed to protect and finish pieces made with acrylic resins such as Acrystal Prima + Basic Crystal or Jesmonite AC100. It is not compatible with polyester, epoxy or polyurethane resins; its field of application is exclusively acrylic resins. Its most common workshop applications are:

  • Sealing and protection of decorative acrylic resin pieces for exterior use: planters, sculptures, architectural elements.
  • Protective finish on interior pieces exposed to moisture or continuous abrasion.
  • Creation of finishing patinas by mixing it with acrylic pigments or mineral fillers to achieve unique decorative effects.
  • Creating progressive matte effects by increasing the proportion of water in the mix.
  • Final protective coat on replicas, sculptures and prop pieces made from acrylic resin.
  • Unifying the finish on textured surfaces without obscuring detail.
  • First diluted primer coat to prepare the piece before applying patinas.

How to use it

  1. Make sure the piece is fully cured, clean and free of dust or grease.
  2. If you want a standard satin finish, apply the product as it comes. If you want a more fluid consistency or a more matte effect, dilute it with water up to 50% by volume.
  3. Mix well before use, especially if you have added water or acrylic pigments.
  4. Apply a first thin and even coat with a soft brush or spray gun. Avoid product build-up in concave areas.
  5. Allow to dry for at least 1 hour at 20 °C before touching the piece.
  6. Wait 2 hours between coats to ensure correct adhesion between them.
  7. Apply a second coat if you need greater protection or a more uniform finish.
  8. Clean tools with water immediately after use, before the varnish dries.

Usage tips

Controlling the final finish

The gloss level of the varnish depends directly on the dilution: the more water you add, the more matte the finish will be. If you want the product's characteristic satin finish, apply it undiluted or with little water. For highly porous surfaces, a very diluted first coat acts as a sealer and prevents subsequent coats from being absorbed unevenly.

Patinas and decorative effects

Acrystal Finition can be mixed directly with acrylic pigments or fine mineral fillers to create colour patinas with integrated protection. Prepare the mix in small quantities, as the open time is limited once pigments have been added. Always test the mix on an inconspicuous area of the piece before applying it to the entire surface.

Temperature and workshop conditions

Below 15 °C drying slows down considerably and the varnish may have a milky appearance if it does not cure properly. Always work above this temperature and avoid applying to cold surfaces that have just been brought in from outside in winter. In conditions of high ambient humidity, increase the wait times between coats.

Frequently asked questions

Is this varnish compatible with any type of resin?

No. Acrystal Finition is a varnish formulated exclusively for acrylic resins such as Acrystal Prima + Basic Crystal or Jesmonite AC100. It is not suitable for polyester, epoxy or polyurethane resins.

How many coats do I need to apply for optimal protection?

In most cases two coats are sufficient. For pieces intended for exterior use or subjected to heavy use, you can apply a third coat, always respecting the 2-hour wait time between them.

Can I apply it to a resin piece without sanding or preparing it?

The piece must be clean, dry and free of dust or grease. Sanding is not essential, but if the surface has stains or release agent residue, clean them off before applying the varnish to ensure correct adhesion.

Can it be used as a primer before painting with acrylics?

Yes. Diluted 50% with water it acts as a sealer and primer, preparing the surface to receive acrylic paint coats more evenly and with better adhesion.

Is the finish glossy or matte?

The base finish of Acrystal Finition is satin. You can make it more matte by increasing the proportion of water in the mix. If you apply it undiluted you will get the maximum gloss level the product offers.

How do you clean the brush or spray gun after use?

With running water immediately after use. Once the varnish dries, cleaning becomes much more difficult, so do not leave tools uncleaned even for a short break.

How long does it take to dry between coats?

The touch-dry time is 1 hour at 20 °C. To apply a second coat with guaranteed correct adhesion, wait at least 2 hours. In conditions of low temperature or high humidity, extend these times.

Can I mix it with pigments to create colour patinas?

Yes, it is one of its most common workshop applications. Mix Acrystal Finition with acrylic pigments or fine mineral fillers to obtain a protective patina with integrated colour. Always test the mix on an inconspicuous area before applying it to the entire piece.
