What it's used for

This set covers all phases of prosthetics and special effects makeup work: from application and edge blending to painting, texturing and prosthetic removal. Each brush is designed for a specific task within the SFX workflow.

  • Applying adhesives and solvents to fix and remove silicone or foam latex prosthetics
  • Blending and feathering prosthetic edges onto skin
  • Painting and intrinsic-colouring silicone prosthetics with pigments and alcohol-activated colours
  • Creating skin textures with stipple brushes in various sizes
  • Applying liquid latex in layers to build cumulative effects
  • Detail work and lining in complex character makeups
  • Removing prosthetics with solvents without damaging the piece or the actor's skin
  • Full body makeup, film shoots, theatre and television

How to use it

  1. Select the right brush for each phase: liners (101, 102) for edges and details, filbert brushes (103, 104, 105) for applying adhesives and pigments to medium or hard-to-reach areas, stipple (106–110) for creating skin textures, and the remover (112) for prosthetic removal.
  2. To apply FX adhesive, lightly load the filbert brush and apply in thin layers over the prosthetic and skin, allowing to dry between layers.
  3. To blend edges, use the long filbert (105) with the appropriate solvent and work the prosthetic edge with short strokes until it integrates with the skin.
  4. To paint, use the stipple brushes loaded with alcohol-activated pigments or silicone inks, working in layers to build depth and realism.
  5. To remove the prosthetic, soak the remover brush (112) with the corresponding solvent and introduce the tip under the prosthetic edge with gentle, controlled movements.
  6. Clean the brushes after each use with the solvent appropriate to the material you've been working with (soapy water for latex, specific solvent for silicone adhesives), and dry them with bristles facing down or horizontally to preserve their shape.

Usage tips

Maintenance and cleaning

The ferrule on these brushes is bonded with an adhesive formulated to resist solvents, but that doesn't mean you should submerge the entire handle. Always clean from the bristles towards the ferrule, without letting liquid penetrate beyond it. Dry in a horizontal position or with bristles facing down: never upright with bristles pointing up, to prevent solvent from migrating into the ferrule and weakening the bond over time.

Each brush for its function

The set is designed with a workflow logic in mind: don't use the same brush to apply adhesive and to paint, even if you clean it between steps. Reserve the stipple brushes exclusively for texturing and the filbert brushes for adhesives and blending. This extends the lifespan of each brush and maintains work quality. If you need to buy individual brushes to replace one or expand your kit, you can purchase the Pro-FX 101 Fine Liner, the Pro-FX 102 Angle Liner or the Pro-FX 103 Medium Filbert separately.

Storage and transport

Store the set with the bristles protected, either in its case or in a brush roll, avoiding bending during transport. Synthetic bristles are resilient but recover their shape poorly if stored deformed for extended periods. On long shooting days, always have a second clean set on hand so you can rotate without interrupting your workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Are the brushes acetone-resistant?

Yes. The synthetic bristles of the Titanic FX The Original set are formulated to withstand common solvents used in FX work, including acetone. The ferrule adhesive is also specifically selected to not degrade with solvent use. Even so, avoid submerging the ferrule or handle in solvent for prolonged periods.

Are they suitable for working with platinum silicone?

Yes, you can use these brushes to apply and paint platinum silicones. The synthetic bristles do not react with silicone or introduce contaminants that could cause cure inhibition. Clean them thoroughly before switching materials.

What is the difference between filbert brushes and stipple brushes?

Filbert brushes (103 Medium, 104 Short, 105 Long) have a tapered shape with a soft tip, ideal for applying adhesives, solvents and foundations over broad or hard-to-reach areas. Stipple brushes (106–110) have flat, round or circular shapes and are used to create skin textures through pressure and stippling, not by brushing strokes.

Can I use these brushes for conventional makeup as well as FX?

Technically yes, but they are optimised for FX materials such as adhesives, latex, silicones and solvents. For conventional beauty makeup there are more suitable tools available. In combined theatrical or cinematic character work (beauty + effects), this set perfectly covers the effects side.

How many brushes does the set include and what is each reference?

The set includes 11 brushes: Pro-FX 101 Fine Liner, Pro-FX 102 Angle Liner, Pro-FX 103 Medium Filbert, Pro-FX 104 Short Filbert, Pro-FX 105 Long Filbert, Pro-FX 106 Small Flat Tip Stipple, Pro-FX 107 Small Round Tip Stipple, Pro-FX 108 Medium Straight Flat Stipple, Pro-FX 109 Medium Rounded Stipple, Pro-FX 110 Long Circular Stipple, and Pro-FX 112 Square Tip Remover.

Is it possible to buy the brushes individually if I need to replace one?

Yes. Feroca distributes several models from the set individually, such as the Pro-FX 101, the Pro-FX 102 and the Pro-FX 103, allowing you to replace without needing to purchase another full set.

Are they ethical and sustainable?

Yes. Titanic FX designs these brushes with ethically sustainable materials and 100% synthetic vegan bristles, with no animal hair. It's a consistent choice for professionals who want to maintain ethical standards in their kit without sacrificing technical performance.

Which brush from the set should I use to remove a prosthetic?

The Pro-FX 112 Square Tip Remover is specifically designed for this task. Its rigid, square tip allows you to introduce solvent under the prosthetic edge in a controlled manner, minimising the risk of damaging the piece or irritating the actor's skin.
