Artificial snow powder made from sodium polyacrylate. Non-toxic. Expands 30–50 times when water is added. Realistic and long-lasting effect for FX.

Artificial snow for special effects is a modified sodium polyacrylate powder that, when it absorbs water, generates snow with a completely realistic appearance. Non-toxic, it activates in minutes and allows you to control the texture —from dry and fluffy snow to wet and compact— simply by adjusting the amount of water. Ideal for film, theatre, photography, window display and events where the realism of the effect matters.

What it is used for

Artificial Snow for FX is designed for professionals and technicians who need large volumes of convincing-looking snow with minimum logistical effort. Its most common applications are:

  • Snow scenes in film, advertising and music video shoots
  • Theatre sets and indoor and outdoor atmospheric staging
  • Product, fashion and Christmas photography
  • Window displays and shop decoration during the winter season
  • Corporate events, themed parties and theme parks
  • Architectural scale models with snowy landscapes
  • Snow effects for stop-motion photography and video

How to use it

  1. Decide on the texture you need: for dry and loose snow, use the minimum water ratio (300 ml per 10 g); for wet and compact snow, use up to 500 ml per 10 g.
  2. Pour the powder into a wide, clean container with enough capacity for the final expanded volume.
  3. Add the water gradually over the powder, distributing it evenly. There is no need to stir excessively: the powder absorbs the water on its own.
  4. Wait approximately 10 minutes for the polyacrylate to activate fully and for the snow to reach its final texture.
  5. Distribute the snow across the set, scale model or work area. If you need to adjust the texture, add a little more water or let it dry slightly in the air.
  6. To reuse or store it, dry the snow completely in the air: it will return to its powder state and can be activated again by adding water.

Usage tips

Control the texture with the amount of water

The water/powder ratio is the only parameter that determines the final result. With 300 ml per 10 g you get granular, loose snow, similar to freshly fallen snow. With 500 ml the result is a denser, stickier snow, resembling packed or wet snow. Run a small test before activating the entire batch, especially when working with large volumes.

Work on waterproof surfaces

Once activated, the snow retains a lot of water. Place plastic sheeting or tarps under the work area to avoid staining floors or porous surfaces. If you need to add dirt, dust or ageing to the snow effect, you can incorporate Fleet Street DirtWorks Powders by gently working them over the surface once the snow is distributed.

Regeneration and storage

If the activated snow is not going to be used immediately, keep it covered to prevent the water from evaporating. If it has already dried, the resulting powder can be reactivated by adding water. To store the unactivated product, keep it in its original container, tightly sealed, in a cool and dry place away from ambient humidity to prevent clumping before use.

Frequently asked questions

Is artificial snow safe to use indoors around people and animals?

Yes. Artificial Snow for FX is formulated with modified sodium polyacrylate, a non-toxic material widely used in industry and entertainment. It does not release harmful vapours or particles once activated. Even so, in dry powder form it is advisable to avoid inhaling large quantities: work in ventilated spaces and, if handling significant volumes, use a basic protective mask.

Can I use tap water or do I need distilled water?

Tap water works perfectly. There is no need to use distilled or treated water. Water hardness can minimally affect absorption, but in practice the difference is negligible. If the water in your area is very hard and you notice reduced expansion, try bottled water with low mineral content.

How long does the effect last once activated?

Indoors without draughts, activated snow maintains its appearance for hours and even days if the environment is not very dry. Outdoors or in heat, the water evaporates progressively and the snow gradually loses volume and texture. For multi-day productions, it is advisable to prepare fresh batches each day or spray water over already-activated snow to rehydrate it.

Can it be reused after it has dried out?

Yes. Once the water has completely evaporated, the polyacrylate returns to its dry state and can be reactivated by adding water. Absorption capacity may decrease slightly with successive reuses, but the effect remains functional. To store the recovered powder, keep it in an airtight container away from moisture.

Which format is best for a shoot or event?

It depends on the volume of snow you need. The 200 g jar is ideal for tests, scale models or small sets (up to 18 litres of snow). For medium-sized sets or window displays, the 1 kg bucket covers between 53 and 87.5 litres. For larger-scale productions —exteriors, large studios, theme parks— the 4 kg and 10 kg buckets offer between 200 litres and 1 m³ of snow at a very low cost per litre.

Does the snow stain surfaces or clothing?

Generally it does not stain permanently, but being an absorbent powder it can leave white residue on dark surfaces once dry. On clothing, it washes out easily in a normal wash cycle. Protect wooden floors or carpets with plastic sheeting during the shoot to avoid prolonged moisture problems.

Can artificial snow be dyed or coloured?

Yes. You can add water-soluble dyes to the activation water to obtain coloured snow (dirty snow effects, fantasy snowfall, bluish ice, etc.). Water-based dyes or inks integrate well during activation. For dirt and dust effects over already-distributed white snow, Fleet Street DirtWorks Powders are a very effective solution.

Is it suitable for outdoor use?

Yes, it can be used outdoors. Bear in mind that sun and wind accelerate evaporation, reducing the lifespan of the effect. Outdoors it is advisable to work with the maximum water ratio so the snow lasts longer, and to prepare reserve batches to rehydrate or replenish throughout the day.
