PlatSil FS-20 -Platinum Silicone-
50,82 € Tax incl.
PlatSil FS-20 is a translucent platinum (addition) silicone with Shore A20 hardness, formulated to deliver exceptional tear resistance with a fast 25-minute cure. Its equal-parts mix ratio by weight and volume (1A:1B) and its naturally thixotropic behaviour before gelling make it equally suitable for direct casting and brush application without sagging.

What it's used for
FS-20 is designed for situations where you need a mould ready in the shortest possible time without sacrificing any durability. Its translucency once cured makes it easy to visually locate the model inside the mould and mark parting lines with precision. You can use it directly as a casting silicone or thicken it with PlatThix to brush it onto moulds of bulky pieces.
- Casting moulds for reproducing decorative, industrial and artistic pieces
- Brush-applied moulds for large objects or complex low-relief surfaces, thickened with PlatThix
- Moulds requiring post-cure cutting, thanks to its translucency
- Reproduction of fine textures and high-resolution surface details
- Difficult demoulding situations where tear resistance is critical
- Production run moulds thanks to its fast cure cycle
- Rapid prototyping requiring reduced time between casting and demoulding
How to use it
- Prepare the model: make sure it is free of inhibiting contaminants (sulphur, latex, epoxy, freshly cured polyester). Apply a release agent if the model material requires it.
- Weigh or measure the two components in a 1A:1B ratio, either by weight or by volume. For small quantities, a precision scale is more reliable.
- Mix component A with component B for at least 2 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of the container thoroughly to ensure a homogeneous mix.
- If you need a thicker consistency for brush application, add PlatThix at this point and mix again until evenly distributed.
- Pour the silicone slowly in a thin stream over the lowest point of the mould so the material rises while displacing air, or brush it on if you have added thickener.
- You have approximately 8 minutes of working time at 23 °C. Work efficiently but without rushing.
- Allow to cure at room temperature for 25 minutes. Do not force demoulding before the cure time is complete.
- Demould carefully. The high tear resistance of FS-20 allows the mould to be stretched during difficult demoulding without tearing.
Usage tips
Control temperature to manage working time
At 23 °C you have 8 minutes of working time, which is sufficient for medium-sized moulds. If you need more time for large or complex pieces, work in a cooler environment (below 20 °C) to slightly slow the reaction. Heat accelerates the cure and reduces the available time. Never add more than 3% of a compatible retarder; exceeding that proportion can ruin the silicone.
Use the translucency to cut moulds with precision
Once cured, FS-20 is translucent: you can see the model inside the mould. This is especially useful when you need to cut the mould to extract the piece. Mark the parting lines on the outside with a marker pen before cutting, aligning the cut with the thinnest points of the mould wall to ensure a clean and repeatable opening.
Inhibition test before you start
If you are going to mould over a material you are not familiar with, cure a small amount of FS-20 directly on that material for 30 minutes. If the result is tacky or fails to gel, the material is inhibiting and you need to seal it (shellac, compatible acrylic varnish) or replace it. This step saves you wasting an entire batch of silicone.
Frequently asked questions
What materials inhibit the cure of platinum silicones?
Platinum silicones such as PlatSil FS-20 can be inhibited by: sulphur-containing clays and oil-based clays, latex, tin (condensation) silicones, freshly cured polyester and epoxy resins, urethane rubbers, petroleum jelly, and some metal surfaces. If you suspect a material, always carry out a small-scale test before the final work. The usual symptom of inhibition is a tacky surface or incomplete cure.
Can I brush this silicone on instead of casting it?
Yes. PlatSil FS-20 is a pour-grade silicone, but you can thicken it by adding PlatThix before application. PlatThix increases viscosity without affecting cure time or the final mechanical properties of the mould. The resulting consistency does not sag and allows the mould to be built up in successive layers over vertical or large pieces.
Can I use tin silicone to make the mould and then cast pieces in platinum silicone?
No. Platinum silicone will not cure over condensation (tin) silicones: it becomes inhibited and remains tacky. If you need a mould for casting pieces in platinum silicone, the mould itself must be made from a compatible material, such as a properly sealed rigid resin mould or a mould made from the same platinum silicone.
How long do I need to wait before demoulding?
PlatSil FS-20 reaches functional cure in 25 minutes at 23 °C. It is advisable to respect this minimum time before demoulding. If the ambient temperature is below 20 °C, the cure may be delayed; in that case, wait until the mould is completely solid to the touch before extracting the piece.
How much actual working time do I have once the mix is made?
At 23 °C you have approximately 8 minutes from the moment you finish mixing the two components. Subtract the 2 minutes of mixing time, leaving you around 6 minutes to pour or brush. If you need more margin, lower the temperature of the working environment or use a compatible retarder (maximum 3%).
Is this silicone suitable for skin-contact applications?
PlatSil FS-20 is a platinum silicone, but it is not specifically certified for Life Casting or prolonged skin contact. For human body moulding or prosthetic applications in direct contact with skin, please refer to the specific products in Feroca's range such as KEY-FORM or the PlatSil Gel range silicones with the appropriate certification.
How can I colour this silicone?
Being translucent once cured, FS-20 is an excellent base for adding pigments specifically designed for platinum silicones. Add the pigment to component A before mixing with component B, and blend thoroughly. Do not use solvent-based pigments or colorants intended for polyurethane resins, as these may interfere with the cure.
Do I need to use a release agent on the model before applying the silicone?
It depends on the model material. Platinum silicones generally do not bond to most smooth surfaces (sealed wood, plastic, sealed plaster, metal), so a release agent is not always essential. However, if the model is porous or made from an unknown material, sealing with acrylic varnish and applying a compatible release agent is always the safest option to ensure a clean demould.
